CHAPTER 5
E-BANKING SERVICES & CHALLENGES
NET BANKING OR INTERNET BANKING
Net Banking, also known as Internet Banking, is a digital banking service provided by banks that allows
customers to access and manage their bank accounts online using the internet. It enables users to perform
financial transactions anytime and anywhere without visiting a physical bank branch.
FEATURES OF NET BANKING
1. Account Balance Enquiry and Statement Viewing: This feature allows customers to instantly check
their available balance without visiting a bank branch or ATM. Users can also download or view account
statements for a specific period (daily, monthly, yearly), which helps in tracking income, expenses, and
financial planning. It improves transparency and control over finances.
2. Fund Transfer (NEFT, RTGS, IMPS): Customers can transfer money online using different systems:
a. NEFT – Used for transferring money in batches (not instant but reliable).
b. RTGS – Used for high-value transfers with real-time settlement.
c. IMPS – Instant transfer facility available 24/7, even on holidays.
3. Online Bill Payments and Recharges: Customers can conveniently pay utility bills like electricity, water,
gas, internet, and insurance premiums through internet banking. Mobile, DTH, and data card recharges
can also be done instantly. Some banks even provide automatic payment options, ensuring that bills are
paid on time and avoiding penalties.
4. 24/7 Access to Banking Services: Unlike traditional banking, which is limited to working hours, online
banking services are available round the clock. Customers can perform transactions anytime, from
anywhere, using a smartphone or computer. This is especially useful during emergencies or for people
with busy schedules.
5. Online Shopping and Payment Facility: Internet banking allows customers to make payments while
shopping on e-commerce platforms. Instead of using cash, payments can be made directly through bank
accounts using net banking, debit cards, or integrated payment systems. This promotes cashless
transactions and enhances convenience.
6. Account Management (Update Details, Cheque Book Request): Users can manage their banking needs
online, such as updating contact details (mobile number, email), requesting a new cheque book, stopping
cheque payments, blocking lost cards, or setting transaction limits. This reduces dependency on bank
visits and saves time.
7. Loan and Investment Services: Online banking platforms enable customers to apply for loans (personal,
home, vehicle) and check their eligibility, interest rates, and repayment schedules. They can also invest in
fixed deposits, recurring deposits, mutual funds, or other financial instruments directly from their
accounts, making financial planning easier.
8. Secure Transactions (OTP, Passwords, Encryption): Banks use advanced security systems to protect
user data and transactions. These include login passwords, One-Time Passwords (OTP) sent to registered
mobile numbers, and encryption technology to secure information. Some banks also use biometric
authentication or two-factor authentication for extra safety.
9. E-Statements and Transaction Alerts: Customers receive electronic account statements via email,
reducing the need for paper statements. Additionally, instant alerts (SMS/email) are sent for every
transaction, including deposits, withdrawals, or suspicious activities. This helps users monitor their
accounts regularly and detect fraud quickly.
10. User-Friendly Interface: Most online banking platforms are designed to be simple and easy to navigate,
even for first-time users. Clear menus, guided steps, and mobile apps make it convenient to perform
transactions, check balances, and access services without confusion.
ADVANTAGES OF NET BANKING
1. Saves Time (No Need to Visit Bank): Online banking eliminates the need to stand in long queues at bank
branches. Customers can perform transactions like checking balance, transferring money, or paying bills
from home, saving both time and effort.
2. Available 24/7: Banking services are accessible at any time of the day, including weekends and holidays.
This ensures that users can carry out transactions whenever it is convenient for them, without being
restricted by banking hours.
3. Easy Fund Transfer: Transferring money has become simple and quick through online modes like NEFT,
RTGS, and IMPS. Users can send money to anyone’s account within minutes by entering basic details
like account number and IFSC code.
4. Quick Bill Payments: Online banking allows instant payment of utility bills such as electricity, water,
gas, and mobile recharges. This helps avoid delays, late fees, and ensures timely payments.
5. Convenient and Simple to Use: Most online banking platforms are designed with easy navigation and
simple steps. Even users with basic knowledge of technology can use these services comfortably.
6. Instant Access to Account Details: Customers can immediately check their account balance, transaction
history, and other details anytime. This helps in better financial planning and monitoring of expenses.
7. Reduces Paperwork: Online banking minimizes the use of physical documents like passbooks, forms,
and receipts. E-statements and digital records make banking more eco-friendly and organized.
DISADVANTAGES OF NET BANKING
1. Risk of Hacking or Fraud: Online banking systems are vulnerable to cyber-attacks such as hacking,
phishing, and malware. If users are not cautious, their confidential information like passwords, OTPs, and
bank details may be stolen, leading to financial loss.
2. Requires Internet Connection: Online banking services depend entirely on internet access. In areas with
poor or no internet connectivity, users may find it difficult to access their accounts or complete
transactions.
3. Technical Issues or Server Problems: Banking websites and mobile applications may sometimes face
technical glitches, server downtime, or maintenance issues. This can interrupt services and delay
important transactions.
4. Not Suitable for Non-Technical Users: Individuals who are not familiar with digital technology,
especially elderly people, may find it difficult to use online banking platforms effectively.
5. Password Misuse Risk: If users share their passwords, use weak passwords, or fail to log out properly,
there is a high risk of unauthorized access to their accounts, which can lead to misuse or fraud.
6. Limited Help Compared to Branch Service: Unlike traditional banking, where staff provide direct
assistance, online banking offers limited personal interaction. Resolving complex issues may take more
time through online support or customer care.

mainly used for large value transactions, and the transfer happens immediately without any waiting time.
FEATURES OF RTGS
1. Real Time Processing: RTGS transactions are processed immediately as they are initiated, without any
waiting time. This ensures that funds are transferred instantly from the sender’s bank to the receiver’s
bank.
2. Gross Settlement: Each transaction is settled individually on a one-to-one basis, without bundling with
other transactions. This reduces delays and ensures quick settlement.
3. High Value Transaction: RTGS is mainly used for large-value transactions. In India, it is generally
preferred for transfers above ₹2 lakh, making it suitable for business and corporate payments.
4. Availability During Banking Hours: Traditionally, RTGS was available only during banking hours.
However, it is now offered 24/7 by most banks, though it is still primarily associated with high-value
transactions during working hours.
5. Security: RTGS transactions are highly secure and regulated by the Reserve Bank of India. Advanced
security measures ensure safe and reliable fund transfers.
6. Settlement Finality: Once an RTGS transaction is processed, it is final and cannot be reversed. This
ensures certainty and reduces settlement risk.

7. Helps in Cashless Economy: These systems promote digital payments, reduce the use of physical cash,
and support the growth of a cashless economy.
DISADVANTAGES OF IMPS, RTGS, NEFT
1. Requires Internet or Banking Access: To use these services, customers need internet banking, mobile
banking, or access to a bank branch. Without proper connectivity or banking facilities, transactions cannot
be performed.
2. Risk of Wrong Account Transfer: If incorrect details such as account number or IFSC code are entered,
the money may be transferred to the wrong account. Such transactions are difficult to reverse.
3. Service Charges May Apply: Some banks may charge fees for using NEFT, RTGS, or IMPS, especially
for certain transaction types or channels, increasing the cost of transactions.
4. Technical/Server Issues May Delay Transactions: Banking systems may face technical glitches, server
downtime, or maintenance issues, which can delay or temporarily stop transactions.

MEANING OF CONTACTLESS PAYMENTS
Contactless payments refer to a secure payment method using radio-frequency identification (RFID) or near-
field communication (NFC) technology. It allows users to make transactions by simply tapping a card,
smartphone, or wearable device on a point-of-sale (POS) terminal without physical contact.
NFC Cards (Near Field Communication Cards):
NFC cards are contactless payment cards that use short-range wireless technology called Near Field
Communication to make payments. Users simply tap the card on a payment machine to complete the
transaction without inserting or swiping the card.

tapping their card or mobile device. This reduces waiting time at checkout counters. It is especially useful
for small, everyday purchases.
2. Enhanced Security: These payments use technologies like encryption and tokenization to protect user
data. Sensitive card details are not directly shared during the transaction. This makes contactless payments
safer than traditional methods.
3. User-Friendly: Contactless payment systems are simple and easy to use, requiring minimal steps. Even
first-time users can quickly understand the process. No PIN is needed for small transactions, adding to
ease of use.
4. Fraud Reduction: Since the card or device remains with the user and does not need to be handed over,
the risk of misuse is reduced. Advanced security features also help prevent unauthorized transactions. This
lowers the chances of fraud.
5. Wider Adoption: Contactless payments are increasingly accepted at retail stores, restaurants, and public
transport systems. Growing infrastructure and awareness have made it widely popular. This increases its
usability across different sectors.
6. Integration with Digital Wallets: Contactless payments work seamlessly with digital wallets like Google
Pay, Apple Pay, and Samsung Pay. Users can store multiple cards and make payments easily using their
smartphones. This enhances flexibility and convenience.
CHALLENGES OF CONTACTLESS PAYMENTS
1. Transaction Limits: Contactless payments usually have a limit for each transaction (especially without
PIN authentication). This makes them unsuitable for high-value purchases. Users may need to switch to
other payment methods for larger amounts.
2. Security Concerns: Although secure, there are still concerns about data theft or unauthorized scanning.
Some users fear that their card details may be accessed without consent. This creates hesitation in adopting
contactless payments.
3. Limited Merchant Adoption: Not all merchants are equipped with contactless payment terminals. In
smaller towns or rural areas, availability is still limited. This restricts the usability of contactless payments.
4. Technology Dependence: Contactless payments rely on devices like smartphones, NFC-enabled cards,
and POS machines. Any issue with these technologies can interrupt transactions. This makes the system
dependent on proper infrastructure.
5. Device Malfunctions: If the card, smartphone, or payment terminal is not working properly, the
transaction may fail. Technical glitches can cause inconvenience, especially during urgent payments.
6. Potential for Unauthorized Use: If a contactless card or device is lost or stolen, small transactions can
be made without a PIN. This increases the risk of misuse until the card is blocked.
7. Lack of Consumer Awareness: Many users are not fully aware of how contactless payments work or
their benefits. Lack of knowledge and trust can reduce adoption. Awareness programs are needed to
encourage usage.
QR CODES
QR codes are square-shaped barcodes that store payment information. Users scan the code using a mobile app
(like PhonePe) to make payments instantly without using cash or cards.
ADVANTAGES OF QR CODES

physical cash or cards. This increases convenience and reduces the risk of loss or theft. It supports a digital
lifestyle.
3. Available 24/7: QR code payments can be made anytime, including weekends and holidays. There are no
restrictions based on banking hours. This ensures continuous access to payment services.
4. Low Cost (No Need for Machines): Merchants do not need expensive POS machines to accept payments.
A simple printed QR code is enough to receive payments. This makes it cost-effective, especially for small
businesses.
5. Contactless and Hygienic: Payments are made without physical contact between the customer and
merchant. This reduces the spread of germs and ensures safer transactions. It became especially important
during health crises.
6. Secure Transactions with PIN/OTP: QR code payments are protected by security features like UPI PIN
or OTP authentication. This ensures that only authorized users can complete transactions. It reduces the
risk of fraud.
7. Widely Accepted in Shops and Online: QR codes are accepted by a large number of merchants, from
small vendors to big stores and online platforms. This increases usability across different sectors. It is a
commonly used payment method today.
8. Instant Confirmation of Payment: Both the payer and receiver get immediate confirmation once the
payment is completed. This avoids confusion and ensures transparency. It helps in maintaining accurate
transaction records.
DEBIT CARDS
A debit card is a plastic card that provides an alternative payment method to cash when making purchases. It
is called an electronic cheque, as the funds are withdrawn directly from the bank account
Debit card system
1. Issuing Bank Logo: This logo shows the bank that has issued the card to the customer. It helps identify
the bank responsible for the account and services linked to the card.
2. EMV Chip: The EMV (Europay, Mastercard, Visa) chip is a small metallic square embedded in the card.
It stores encrypted data and provides enhanced security during transactions, reducing fraud.
3. Card Number: This is a unique 16-digit number printed on the card. It is used to identify the card and is
required for online and offline transactions.
4. Card Brand Logo: This indicates the payment network of the card, such as Visa or Mastercard. It shows
where the card is accepted globally.
5. Expiration Date: This shows the validity period of the card (month and year). After this date, the card
must be renewed or replaced by the bank.
6. Cardholder’s Name: The name of the person to whom the card is issued is printed on the card. It helps
in identification and verification during transactions.
7. CVV (Card Verification Value): The CVV is a 3-digit number printed on the back of the card. It is used
as an additional security feature for online transactions to verify that the user has physical possession of
the card.
ADVANTAGES OF DEBIT CARD
1. Alternative to Cash: Debit cards act as a convenient substitute for physical cash. Users can make
payments at shops, online platforms, and ATMs without carrying cash. This reduces the risk of loss or
theft.
2. Immediate Transfer of Funds: Payments made using a debit card are directly deducted from the user’s
bank account. This ensures real-time transfer of funds without any delay. It helps in maintaining accurate
account balance.
3. Instant Withdrawal of Cash: Debit cards can be used at ATMs to withdraw cash anytime. This provides
easy access to money during emergencies. It eliminates the need to visit bank branches.
4. Easy to Manage: Debit cards help users track their expenses through transaction records and bank
statements. This makes budgeting and financial management easier. It also reduces overspending.
5. Prepaid Card Nature: A debit card allows spending only up to the available balance in the account. This
prevents users from falling into debt, unlike credit cards. It promotes responsible spending habits.
6. Nominal Fees: Debit cards usually have low or minimal charges compared to other payment methods.
Most basic transactions are either free or involve small fees. This makes them cost-effective.
7. Cash Back: Many banks offer cashback and rewards on debit card transactions. This provides additional
benefits to users while making purchases. It encourages digital payments.
DISADVANTAGES OF DEBIT CARD
1. Limited Transactions: Debit cards allow spending only up to the available balance in the bank account.
This limits the ability to make high-value or urgent purchases if sufficient funds are not available.
2. Extra Charges on Extra Transactions: Banks may charge fees for exceeding a certain number of free
ATM withdrawals or transactions. These additional charges can increase the overall cost of usage.
3. Fines for Insufficient Balance: If a transaction is attempted without enough balance, banks may impose
penalties or decline the transaction. This can be inconvenient and may affect financial planning.
4. Security Concerns: Debit cards can be vulnerable to fraud such as card skimming, phishing, or
unauthorized access if the card details or PIN are compromised. Users must be cautious while using their
cards.
5. Less Protection: Compared to credit cards, debit cards offer limited protection against fraudulent
transactions. Since money is directly deducted from the account, recovering lost funds can be more
difficult.
CREDIT CARDS
Credit card is a plastic card issued by a financial institution that allows its user to borrow pre-approved funds
at the point of sale in order to complete a purchase. Credit cards charge interest and are primarily used for
short-term financing.
FEATURES OF CREDIT CARDS
1. Alternative to Cash: Credit cards act as a convenient substitute for cash. Users can make purchases at
stores or online without carrying physical money. This makes transactions easy and widely accepted.
2. Credit Limit: Each credit card comes with a pre-approved credit limit set by the bank. Users can spend
up to this limit and repay later. The limit depends on income, credit score, and bank policies.
3. Aids Payment in Domestic and Foreign Currency: Credit cards can be used for both domestic and
international transactions. They automatically convert foreign currency into local currency. This makes
them useful for travel and global purchases.
4. Record Keeping of All Transactions: Every transaction made using a credit card is recorded and
reflected in monthly statements. This helps users track spending and manage finances effectively. It also
provides transparency.
5. Regular Charges: Credit cards may involve charges such as annual fees, late payment fees, and interest
on outstanding balances. Users must be aware of these charges to avoid extra costs.
6. Grace Period: Credit cards provide a grace period (usually 20–50 days) within which users can repay the
amount without paying interest. This helps in better financial planning and short-term credit usage.
7. Higher Fees on Cash Withdrawals: Withdrawing cash using a credit card (cash advance) attracts high
fees and interest charges. Interest is charged from the date of withdrawal without any grace period. Hence,
it is generally discouraged.
ADVANTAGES OF CREDIT CARDS
1. Proper Evidence Keeping: Credit cards provide detailed records of all transactions through monthly
statements. This helps in tracking expenses and serves as proof of purchase. It is useful for budgeting and
financial management.
2. Low-Cost Loans: Credit cards offer short-term credit at low or no cost if the amount is repaid within the
grace period. This makes it a convenient source of temporary funds. Interest is charged only if payment
is delayed.
3. Instant Cash: Credit cards allow users to withdraw cash from ATMs (cash advance facility). This
provides quick access to money during emergencies. However, it may involve higher charges and interest.
4. Bonus (Rewards & Cashback): Users can earn reward points, cashback, discounts, or travel benefits on
purchases. These incentives make spending more beneficial. Rewards can often be redeemed for gifts or
services.
5. Build Positive Credit: Regular and timely repayment of credit card dues helps in building a good credit
score. A strong credit history improves eligibility for loans and other financial services. It reflects financial
discipline.
6. Purchase Protection: Credit cards often provide protection against fraud, defective products, or non-
delivery of goods. Some cards offer insurance or extended warranties. This increases buyer confidence.
7. Balance Transfer (Balance Surfing): Users can transfer outstanding balances from one credit card to
another with lower interest rates. This helps reduce interest burden and manage debt more efficiently. It
is useful for better financial planning.
LIMITATIONS OF CREDIT CARDS
1. High Rate of Interest: If the outstanding amount is not paid within the grace period, credit cards charge
high interest rates. This can significantly increase the total repayment amount. Continuous non-payment
can lead to heavy financial burden.
2. Paperwork: Applying for a credit card involves documentation such as identity proof, income proof, and
credit history verification. This process may be time-consuming for some users. Approval is not
guaranteed for everyone.
3. High-Cost Fees: Credit cards may include various charges such as annual fees, late payment fees, over-
limit fees, and cash withdrawal charges. These additional costs can make usage expensive if not managed
properly.
4. Deepening Your Debt: Easy access to credit may encourage overspending beyond one’s repayment
capacity. This can lead to accumulation of debt over time. Poor management can result in financial stress.
5. Teaser Rates: Some credit cards offer low introductory interest rates for a limited period. After this period
ends, the interest rate increases significantly. Users may face higher costs if they are not aware of these
changes.
MEANING OF PREPAID CARD
A prepaid card is a card that is loaded with a fixed amount of money in advance and can be used for payments,
purchases, or withdrawals until the balance is exhausted. It is not linked directly to a bank account.
FEATURES OF PREPAID CARD
1. Preloaded with a Specific Amount: Prepaid cards are loaded with a fixed amount of money in advance.
Users can spend only the amount available on the card. This helps in controlling expenses.
2. Not Linked to Bank Account: These cards are not directly connected to a bank account. Transactions are
made using the balance already loaded on the card. This adds an extra layer of safety.
3. Can Be Used for Shopping and Payments: Prepaid cards can be used for online shopping, bill payments,
and purchases at stores. They function similar to debit or credit cards. This makes them versatile for
everyday use.
4. Reloadable (in Most Cases): Many prepaid cards allow users to reload money after the balance is used.
This extends their usability over time. Some cards may also be single-use depending on the type.
5. Accepted at ATMs and POS Machines: Prepaid cards can be used at ATMs for cash withdrawal (if
enabled) and at POS machines for payments. Their acceptance depends on the card network (like Visa or
Mastercard). This ensures wide usability.
6. Easy to Use and Carry: These cards are simple to operate and convenient to carry. Users do not need
extensive banking knowledge. It is suitable for all age groups.
7. Controlled Spending Limit: Since spending is limited to the loaded amount, users can manage their
expenses effectively. It prevents overspending and avoids debt. This makes it useful for budgeting.
ADVANTAGES OF PREPAID CARD
1. Helps in Budgeting and Spending Control: Prepaid cards allow users to spend only the amount loaded
on the card. This helps in managing expenses effectively and sticking to a budget. It is useful for
controlling unnecessary spending.
2. Safer Than Carrying Cash: Using a prepaid card reduces the need to carry physical cash. In case of loss
or theft, the card can be blocked to prevent misuse. This makes it a safer option compared to cash.
3. No Need for Bank Account (in Some Cases): Some prepaid cards can be used without linking to a bank
account. This makes them accessible to people who do not have formal banking facilities. It supports
financial inclusion.
4. Easy to Obtain and Use: Prepaid cards are simple to get with minimal documentation. They are also easy
to use for payments at shops or online platforms. This makes them convenient for all users.
5. Useful for Gifting or Travel: Prepaid cards can be used as gift cards or travel cards. They are convenient
for giving a fixed amount as a gift or managing expenses while traveling. This adds flexibility in usage.
6. Reduces Risk of Overspending: Since spending is limited to the preloaded amount, users cannot exceed
their limit. This prevents debt and promotes disciplined financial behaviour. It is ideal for controlled
spending.
DISADVANTAGES OF PREPAID CARDS
1. Limited to Available Balance: Users can spend only the amount loaded on the card. If the balance is
exhausted, the card cannot be used until it is reloaded. This can be inconvenient during emergencies.
2. Reload Charges May Apply: Some prepaid cards charge fees for reloading money. These additional costs
can make frequent usage slightly expensive. Charges may vary depending on the provider.
3. Not Accepted Everywhere: Prepaid cards may not be accepted at all merchants or online platforms.
Acceptance depends on the card network and type. This limits their usability in certain places.
4. Risk of Loss or Theft: If the prepaid card is lost or stolen, the balance may be misused if not blocked
immediately. Recovery of funds may be difficult in some cases. Users need to be cautious.
5. Limited Features Compared to Debit/Credit Cards: Prepaid cards offer fewer features such as no credit
facility, limited rewards, and fewer banking services. They are less versatile compared to debit or credit
cards.
6. May Have Expiry Date: Prepaid cards often come with an expiry date. If not used within the validity
period, the remaining balance may become inaccessible. Users must be aware of the validity.
FRAUDS IN BANKING
1. Phishing: Fake emails or links are sent to users pretending to be from banks. These trick users into sharing
login details, passwords, or OTPs. Fraudsters use this information to access accounts.
2. Vishing: Fraudsters make fake phone calls posing as bank officials. They ask for sensitive details like
PIN, OTP, or account number. This information is then used for unauthorized transactions.
3. Smishing: Fake SMS messages are sent with links or urgent requests. Users are misled into clicking links
or sharing personal details. This results in financial fraud.
4. Card Skimming: Devices are secretly installed at ATMs or POS machines to copy card data. Fraudsters
use this data to create duplicate cards. It leads to unauthorized withdrawals.
5. SIM Swap Fraud: Fraudsters obtain a duplicate SIM card of the victim’s number. They receive OTPs
and banking alerts. This allows them to access bank accounts and transfer money.
6. UPI Fraud: Users are tricked into approving fake payment requests or scanning fraudulent QR codes.
Instead of receiving money, they unknowingly send money. It is common in digital transactions.
7. Fake Websites: Duplicate websites that look like official bank sites are created. Users enter their login
credentials unknowingly. Fraudsters capture and misuse this data.
8. ATM Fraud: Fraudsters may trap cash in ATM machines or observe PIN entry. They may also use hidden
cameras to capture PINs. This leads to theft of money from accounts.
9. Identity Theft: Personal information like Aadhaar, PAN, or bank details is stolen and misused. Fraudsters
open accounts or take loans in the victim’s name. This causes financial and legal issues.
10. Malware Attacks: Malicious software is installed on devices through unsafe downloads or links. It
records keystrokes or steals banking information. This leads to unauthorized access and transactions.
REMEDIES FOR BANKING FRAUDS
1. Customer Level Remedies
1. Do Not Share OTP, PIN, or Passwords: Customers should never share sensitive information like OTPs,
PINs, or passwords with anyone. Banks never ask for such details, and sharing them can lead to fraud.
2. Use Strong Passwords and Update Regularly: Passwords should be complex and unique. Regularly
updating them reduces the risk of hacking and unauthorized access.
3. Verify Links, Calls, and Messages: Before clicking on any link or responding to calls/messages, users
should verify their authenticity. Fraudsters often use fake communication to steal information.
4. Avoid Using Public Wi-Fi for Banking: Public Wi-Fi networks are not secure and can be easily hacked.
It is safer to use private and secure internet connections for financial transactions.
5. Check Account Statements Regularly: Regular monitoring of bank statements helps in identifying
unauthorized transactions early. Immediate action can prevent further loss.
6. Report Fraud Immediately: Any suspicious activity should be reported to the bank without delay. Quick
reporting increases the chances of recovering funds and blocking further misuse.
2. Bank Level Remedies
1. Provide Secure Systems and Encryption: Banks should implement strong security systems and
encryption technologies to protect customer data and transactions.
2. Monitor Suspicious Transactions: Banks must continuously track unusual or suspicious activities in
accounts. This helps in early detection and prevention of fraud.
3. Use Multi-Factor Authentication: Adding extra layers of security like OTPs and biometric verification
ensures safer transactions.
4. Educate Customers About Frauds: Banks should create awareness programs to inform customers about
different types of fraud and preventive measures.
5. Quick Response to Complaints: Banks must handle customer complaints promptly. Faster action helps
in minimizing losses and increasing customer trust.
6. Regular Security Audits: Periodic audits of banking systems help identify vulnerabilities and improve
security measures.
3. RBI Level Remedies
1. Frame Rules and Guidelines for Banking Security: The Reserve Bank of India sets policies and
guidelines to ensure secure banking practices across the country.
2. Monitor Banks and Ensure Compliance: RBI supervises banks to ensure they follow security standards
and regulatory requirements.
3. Promote Digital Payment Safety Awareness: RBI conducts awareness campaigns to educate the public
about safe digital transactions.

grievance redressal systems, and compensation policies.
ETHICS IN BANKING
Ethics in banking refers to the principles and standards that guide banks and financial institutions to act
honestly, fairly, and responsibly while dealing with customers and society.
KEY ETHICAL ISSUES IN BANKING
1. Misuse of Customer Data: Banks must protect customer information and use it only for authorized
purposes. Misusing or sharing data without consent violates trust and privacy.
2. Lack of Transparency in Charges: Customers should be clearly informed about fees, interest rates, and
charges. Hidden or unclear charges are unethical and can lead to customer dissatisfaction.
3. Unfair Lending Practices: Providing loans with biased terms or exploiting customers with high interest
rates is unethical. Lending should be fair, transparent, and based on proper evaluation.
4. Insider Trading and Corruption: Using confidential information for personal gain or engaging in
corrupt practices damages the integrity of the banking system. Ethical banking requires honesty and
accountability.
5. Discrimination in Providing Services: Banks should treat all customers equally regardless of gender,
caste, income, or background. Discriminatory practices are unethical and illegal.
6. Breach of Confidentiality: Customer details must be kept strictly confidential. Unauthorized disclosure
of information leads to loss of trust and legal consequences.
7. Mis-selling of Financial Products: Selling unsuitable financial products just to earn commissions is
unethical. Banks should recommend products based on customer needs and financial capacity.
8. Conflict of Interest: Situations where personal or institutional interests conflict with customer interests
must be avoided. Decisions should always prioritize fairness and customer benefit.
