Conversation: Going to the That Luang festival
Sarah: Hey, Jack. We've been in Luangrabang for a long time, haven't we?
Jack: Of course, we have. Besides visiting several beautiful and natural places here, we've been to some
interesting festivals. Now I want to go to either the central or the southern part of Laos, to Vientiane,
Savannakhet, or Xekong
Sarah: Well, would you like to go to Vientiane Capital with us? My parents and I are going there to see the That
Luang festival in two weeks.
Jack: Really? I'd love to. Do you know how the That Luang festival is celebrated?
Sarah: No, but I think it sounds exciting and interesting.
Jack: Let's go together and see how people celebrate then.
Sarah: That means you have decided to join us, right?
Jack: You're right.
Sarah: Good. I hope we'll enjoy it.
Jack: Yes, I'm sure we will. Please let me know exactly when you are going so I can be ready.
Sarah: Ok, I will
Jack Thanks

Reading: That Luang Festival
The That Luang festival is the largest celebration and the most popular festival for people in Vientiane Capital.
The That Luang Stupa, built in 1556 by King Xaysetthathirath, is the most important religious building in Laos
and is now the national shrine.
The religious celebration at That Luang officially lasts for three days and is usually held in early November.
The third day is the most interesting. At 6:00 a.m., large crowds of people gather at the That Luang Stupa to
give offerings while monks chant.
In the evening, there is a candle procession called Vian-thian around the stupa. There are also firework displays:
small rockets made by monks are launched into the sky, and larger fireworks are used inside the temple.
Outside the stupa, a carnival is held with music, restaurants, souvenir shops, and more. Although it is noisy, Lao
people enjoy the atmosphere, and many visitors come every year.
