II Reading: Vientiane boat racing festival
The boat racing festival called In Lao "Boun Xouang Heua" is held along the Mekong River, and is celebrated annually at
the end of October. It is a great competition in which many temples, organizations and companies give a boat their
support.
On racing day, the race starts at about 10.00 in the morning Boats are sent to compete in the race from temples,
organizations or companies that support them. Each racing boat is beautifully decorated in many different Lao styles.
Each of the racing boats has its own boatman who leads the chant, and the other crew members pick up his words and
follow him. The crowds of people also chant, sing, dance and cheer.
After the race, the results are announced, and the prizes, usually a silver bowl and a big sum of money, are given to the
boats that win first, second and third prizes. The boat racing festival is a very exciting event, and people enjoy sharing
their time there together.
