Date: 1.04.2026 Total: 20 Marks
CO2 Explain the working principle of various modulators, demodulators used in AM and
FM transmitters & receivers
CO3 Solve problems in random process, amplitude modulation and angle modulation
schemes
1. A super heterodyne receiver operates in the frequency range of 58MHz - 68MHz. The
intermediate frequency fIF and local oscillator frequency fLO are chosen such that fIF ≤
fLO. It is required that the image frequencies fall outside 58MHz – 68 MHz band. Find
minimum required intermediate frequency. [GATE 2016] (4 Marks)
2. For a super heterodyne receiver, the intermediate frequency is 15 MHz and local
oscillator frequency is 3.5 GHz. If the frequency of the received signal is greater than
the local oscillator frequency, find the image frequency. [GATE 2016] (4 Marks)
3. Consider a superheterodyne receiver tuned to 600 kHz. If the local oscillator feeds
a 1000 kHz signal to the mixer, the image frequency (in integer) is
____________________ [GATE 2021] (2 Marks)
4. An envelope detector is used to detect the AM signal with a carrier frequency of 1
MHz and modulation signal frequency as 2 KHz. Determine the required time
constant to perform demodulation. (2 Marks)
5. An AM signal is expressed as x (t) = 10 cos (2π x 105 t) + 6 cos (2π x 103 t) cos (2π x
105 t). The signal is detected using a linear diode. Identify a suitable resistor when
the capacitance is chosen as 100 pF. (4 Marks)
6. An AM commercial broadcast receiver operates in the frequency range of 535 kHz to
1605 kHz with an input filter Q factor of 54, determine the bandwidth at low and
high ends of the RF spectrum. Compare it with required IF bandwidth and comment
on the same. (4 Marks)
