Storage Devices
Storage devices are hardware components used to store data and information in
a computer system.
Examples
• Hard Disk
• USB Flash Drive
• RAM
• ROM
Primary Storage Devices
Primary storage devices are the main memory devices directly connected to the
CPU for fast data access.
Types
RAM
ROM
Cache Memory
1. RAM (Random Access Memory)
RAM is temporary memory used to store active programs and data
currently in use.
Features
• Temporary memory
• Fast processing
• Data lost after shutdown
Example
Running PowerPoint or Chrome uses RAM.
2. ROM (Read Only Memory)
ROM is permanent memory that stores startup instructions of the computer.
Features
• Permanent memory
• Stores boot instructions
• Data remains saved
Example
ROM helps start the operating system.
3. Cache Memory
Cache memory is very high-speed memory that stores frequently used data for
quick CPU access.
Features
• Very fast memory
• Improves performance
• Small storage capacity
Example
Frequently opened apps load faster through cache memory.
Secondary Storage Devices
Secondary storage devices are hardware devices used to store data permanently for a long period
of time.
Characteristics
• Non-volatile memory
• Large storage capacity
• Permanent data storage
• Slower than RAM
• Cost effective
Examples
HDD ,SSD ,SSHD ,Memory Card ,CD/DVD etc
1. HDD (Hard Disk Drive)
HDD is a magnetic storage device that stores data on rotating platters.
Characteristics
• Large storage capacity
• Uses moving parts
• Magnetic technology
• Non-volatile storage
Advantages
• Affordable price
• Good for large files
• Easily available
Example
Desktop computers and CCTV systems use HDD.
2. SSD (Solid State Drive)
SSD is a modern storage device that uses flash memory to store data.
Characteristics
• No moving parts
• Lightweight
• Energy efficient
• Fast performance
Advantages
• Very fast
• Silent operation
• Shock resistant
Example
Modern laptops and gaming PCs use SSD.
3. SSHD (Solid State Hybrid Drive)
SSHD is a storage device that combines HDD and SSD technologies.
Characteristics
• Uses flash + magnetic storage
• Balanced speed and storage
• Moderate price range
Advantages
• Faster than HDD
• Cheaper than SSD
• Better performance balance
Example
Gaming laptops and mid-range PCs use SSHD.
4. USB Flash Drive / Pen Drive
A USB Flash Drive is a portable storage device used to save and transfer data between devices.
• Small and easy to carry
• Stores documents, photos, and videos
• Connects through a USB port
Example: Used for transferring assignments, presentations, and files between computers.
5. Memory Card (SD Card / microSD)
A Memory Card is a compact storage device used in smartphones, cameras, and other electronic devices.
Main Points
• Expands device storage
• Stores photos, videos, and files
• Available in different storage sizes
Example: Used in mobile phones and digital cameras for storing photos and videos.
6. CD (Compact Disc)
A CD is an optical storage disc used for storing digital data, music, and software.
• Stores up to 700 MB of data
• Commonly used for music
• Requires a CD drive to read data
Example: Used for storing songs, movies, and computer software.
7. DVD (Digital Versatile Disc)
A DVD is an optical storage disc that can hold more data than a CD.
• Stores up to 4.7 GB of data
• Used for movies and videos
• Requires a DVD drive for use
Example:
Used for watching movies and storing large video files.
8. External Hard Drive
An External Hard Drive is a portable storage device used to store and transfer large amounts of
data.
• Portable and easy to carry
• Connects with computer/laptop
• Stores large amount of data
• Useful for backup and file transfer
Example
Used for storing movies, games, and backup files.
9. Magnetic Tape
Magnetic Tape is a storage device that uses magnetic material for storing data.
• Used for backup storage
• Suitable for long-term storage
• Low cost storage device
• Slower than modern devices
Example
Banks and large companies use magnetic tapes for backup.
Cloud Storage
Cloud Storage stores data on internet servers instead of physical devices.
• Access files anytime
• Requires internet connection
• Safe data backup
• Easy file sharing
Types:
• Google Drive
• Dropbox
• OneDrive
• iCloud
1. Google Drive
Google Drive is a cloud storage service provided by Google.
• Stores photos, videos, and documents
• Free limited storage available
• Accessible from mobile and laptop
