Working – Sample Calculations
Below is a step-by-step walkthrough for selected rows to demonstrate the method. The same procedure
applies to all rows.

Example 1 – Row 1: Brown, Black, Red, Silver

Band 1 (Brown) = 1 | Band 2 (Black) = 0 | Multiplier (Red) = x100 | Tolerance (Silver) = +/-10%
Value = (10) x 100 = 1,000 Ohms Tolerance value = 1,000 x 0.10 = 100 Ohms
Range = 900 Ohms to 1,100 Ohms

Example 2 – Row 3: Violet, Green, Brown, Silver

Band 1 (Violet) = 7 | Band 2 (Green) = 5 | Multiplier (Brown) = x10 | Tolerance (Silver) = +/-10%
Value = (75) x 10 = 750 Ohms Tolerance value = 750 x 0.10 = 75 Ohms
Range = 675 Ohms to 825 Ohms

Example 3 – Row 9: Value and tolerance given (2.2 kOhm +/-10%)

Tolerance value = 2,200 x 0.10 = 220 Ohms
Range = 1,980 Ohms to 2,420 Ohms
Colour codes derived: Red (2), Red (2), Red (x100), Silver (+/-10%) --> Red, Red, Red, Silver

Example 4 – Row 13: Range only given (990 Ohms to 1,210 Ohms)
Nominal value = (990 + 1,210) / 2 = 1,100 Ohms
Tolerance value = (1,210 - 990) / 2 = 110 Ohms
Tolerance % = 110 / 1,100 x 100 = 10% --> Silver band
Colour codes: Brown (1), Red (1), Red (x100), Silver (+/-10%) --> Brown, Red, Red, Silver
