 Part 2 – Reading Comprehension

Read the following text carefully and do the tasks that follow.

Planet Earth, our home, is facing serious environmental challenges that threaten the balance of life.
From polluted water sources to the growing impacts of climate change, the health of our planet is under
increasing pressure. Human activity has accelerated these problems, putting ecosystems, wildlife, and future
generations at risk. In this context, the need for awareness and action has never been more urgent, inspiring
5 people around the world, especially young activists, to stand up and protect the environment. Two inspiring
environmentalists are Autumn Peltier and Mari Copeny, who have both taken strong action to defend clean
water.
Autumn Peltier, who comes from an Indigenous community in Canada, has
become a powerful voice for water protection. She speaks about the importance of
10 clean water, which is a basic human right, at international events. Autumn, whose
community has experienced water problems, believes that governments must act
quickly. If leaders listen to young people like her, they will understand how urgent
the situation is. She often says that if we protect water
today, future generations will have a better life.
15 Mari Copeny, who is also known as “Little Miss Flint,”
became famous when she wrote a letter to the president of
the United States about the water crisis in Flint, Michigan. The city, which had
serious water contamination problems, needed immediate help. Mari, who was only
a child at the time, showed great courage. If she had not spoken up, many people
20 might not have paid attention to the crisis. Her actions prove that even young
individuals can make a difference.
Environmental problems, which affect the entire planet, require global solutions.
If people reduce waste, recycle more, and save energy, they will help protect the Earth. However, if
governments ignored these problems, the consequences would be very serious. Climate change, which is
25 already causing extreme weather, could become even worse.
There are many actions that individuals can take to help the planet. People who recycle, save energy,
and reduce waste contribute to a healthier environment. If more people use renewable energy, such as solar
or wind power, pollution will decrease. On the other hand, if people were more careless about their
consumption, the situation would become much worse.
30 Young activists like Autumn and Mari show that age does not matter. People who care about the
environment can take action in many ways. If we all made small changes in our daily lives, we would create a
big positive impact. On the other hand, if people were more aware of environmental issues, they would
make better choices.
In conclusion, protecting the environment is a shared responsibility. The Earth, which is our only home,
35 needs immediate action. If we all work together, we can create a more sustainable world. However, if we
ignored these problems, future generations would face serious challenges.
