Instructions: Show ALL working clearly. Use correct units in your answers.
Section 1: Simultaneous Equations
Methods: (1) Substitution (2) Elimination
Solve both equations together to find x and y.
1. Solve the simultaneous equations: x + y = 10 and x - y = 4
2. Solve: 2x + y = 14 and x + y = 9
3. Solve: 3x - 2y = 4 and x + y = 3
4. A pencil costs x pence and a ruler costs y pence. Two pencils and one ruler cost 90p. One pencil
and two rulers cost 75p. Find the cost of each item.
Section 2: Trigonometric Ratios
sin θ = Opposite / Hypotenuse SOH
cos θ = Adjacent / Hypotenuse CAH
tan θ = Opposite / Adjacent TOA
5. In a right-angled triangle, the opposite side = 5 cm and hypotenuse = 13 cm. Find sin θ, cos θ, and
tan θ.
6. Find the value of x (to 1 d.p.) in a right triangle where the angle is 35° and the hypotenuse is 10 cm.
(Find the opposite side.)
7. A ladder 8 m long leans against a wall making an angle of 60° with the ground. How high up the wall
does the ladder reach? (Use sin 60° = 0.866)
8. Write the value of: (a) sin 30° (b) cos 45° (c) tan 60°
Section 3: Pythagoras' Theorem
a² + b² = c² where c is the hypotenuse (longest side)
To find a missing side: c = √(a² + b²) or a = √(c² - b²)
9. Find the hypotenuse of a right-angled triangle with legs 6 cm and 8 cm.
10. A right triangle has a hypotenuse of 17 cm and one leg of 8 cm. Find the other leg.
11. A rectangle is 12 m long and 5 m wide. Find the length of its diagonal.
12. A 10 m pole is held vertically by a wire attached 6 m up the pole and fixed to the ground 4.5 m from
the base. Is the wire long enough? Show your working.
Section 4: Volume & Surface Area of a Cone
Volume of Cone V = (1/3) π r² h
Curved Surface Area = π r l (l = slant height)
Total Surface Area = π r l + π r² = π r (l + r)
Note: l² = r² + h² (use Pythagoras to find slant height l)
13. Find the volume of a cone with radius 7 cm and height 12 cm. (Use π = 22/7)
14. A cone has radius 5 cm and slant height 13 cm. Find its total surface area. (Use π = 3.14)
15. An ice cream cone has a radius of 3 cm and a height of 10 cm. Calculate its volume to 2 d.p. (Use
π = 3.14)
Section 5: Volume & Surface Area of a Pyramid
Volume of Pyramid V = (1/3) × Base Area × Height
Surface Area (square base) = Base Area + 4 × (area of triangular
face)
Area of one triangular face = (1/2) × base × slant height
16. A square pyramid has a base of 6 cm × 6 cm and a height of 8 cm. Find its volume.
17. A square pyramid has base side 10 cm and slant height 13 cm. Find its total surface area.
18. A triangular pyramid has a triangular base with area 24 cm² and a height of 9 cm. Find its volume.
Section 6: Volume & Surface Area of a Sphere
Volume of Sphere V = (4/3) π r³
Surface Area of Sphere A = 4 π r²
(r = radius of the sphere)
19. Find the volume of a sphere with radius 6 cm. (Use π = 3.14)
20. A sphere has a diameter of 14 cm. Find its surface area. (Use π = 22/7)
21. A ball has a surface area of 314 cm². Find its radius. (Use π = 3.14)
Section 7: Probability
P(Event) = Number of favourable outcomes / Total number of outcomes
0 ≤ P(Event) ≤ 1 P(Event) + P(Not Event) = 1
22. A bag contains 4 red, 5 blue, and 3 green marbles. A marble is picked at random. Find the
probability of picking: (a) a red marble (b) a blue marble (c) not a green marble
23. A fair six-sided die is rolled. Find the probability of getting: (a) a 4 (b) an even number (c) a
number greater than 2
24. A card is drawn at random from a standard deck of 52 cards. Find the probability of drawing: (a) a
King (b) a Heart (c) a red card
25. In a class of 30 students, 12 play football, 10 play cricket, and 8 play neither sport. A student is
chosen at random. Find the probability that the student plays at least one sport.
