CLASSWORK: VALUE

• Cover an A3 drawing paper using a so� graphite pencil to create a variety of values.

• On the surface you have created, select 4 geometric shapes and rearrange them by
changing their orienta�on or swapping their posi�ons to create a new composi�on.

Materials: White drawing paper, so� graphite pencil, glue.

Value
Value is a concept that refers to the lightness or darkness of a color. It indicates how much
light a color contains and is expressed through the value of the color. Value is created by
mixing a color with white or black.

Black is the absence of light. A surface appears black when it absorbs all light. Similarly, white
is the result of a surface reflec�ng all wavelengths of light. When a surface does not absorb
but reflects light, it appears white. For this reason, black and white are not considered colors,
but they func�on and are perceived like colors.
Gray is produced when a surface reflects all wavelengths equally a�er absorbing them. The
lightness or darkness of gray depends on the surface’s degree of light reflec�on.
