Class 10 CBSE – Chemical Reactions and
Equations Notes
1. Chemical Reaction
A process in which one or more substances are converted into new substances with different
properties.
Indicators of a Chemical Reaction
• Change in colour
• Change in temperature
• Evolution of gas
• Formation of precipitate
• Change in state
2. Chemical Equation
Word Equation: Magnesium + Oxygen → Magnesium Oxide
Balanced Equation: 2Mg + O■ → 2MgO
3. Balancing Chemical Equations
Law of Conservation of Mass: Total mass of reactants = Total mass of products.
Steps: Count atoms → Adjust coefficients → Recheck atoms.
4. Types of Chemical Reactions
(a) Combination Reaction
Two or more substances combine to form a single product.
CaO + H■O → Ca(OH)■
(b) Decomposition Reaction
A compound breaks into simpler substances.
2AgCl → 2Ag + Cl■
(c) Displacement Reaction
A more reactive element displaces a less reactive element.
Zn + CuSO■ → ZnSO■ + Cu
(d) Double Displacement Reaction
Exchange of ions between compounds.
BaCl■ + Na■SO■ → BaSO■ + 2NaCl
5. Oxidation and Reduction
Oxidation: Addition of oxygen / removal of hydrogen.
Reduction: Removal of oxygen / addition of hydrogen.
Example: CuO + H■ → Cu + H■O
6. Redox Reaction
Oxidation and reduction occur simultaneously.
7. Corrosion
Gradual destruction of metals by reaction with air, moisture, etc.
Example: Rusting of iron.
Prevention: Painting, galvanization, greasing, alloying.
8. Rancidity
Oxidation of fats and oils causing unpleasant smell and taste.
Prevention: Refrigeration, airtight containers, antioxidants, nitrogen packing.
Important Exam Equations
2H■ + O■ → 2H■O
CaCO■ → CaO + CO■
Fe + CuSO■ → FeSO■ + Cu
2Pb(NO■)■ → 2PbO + 4NO■ + O■
Quick Revision
• Combination = Many → One
• Decomposition = One → Many
• Displacement = Element replaces element
• Double Displacement = Exchange of ions
• Oxidation = Gain O / Lose H
• Reduction = Lose O / Gain H
