PART 1 - GENERAL

Yield Strength

1.3 DEFINITIONS
A. Architecturally Exposed Structural Steel (AESS): Structural steel framing noted as AESS on
Drawings.
B. Heavy Shapes: ASTM A6, Group 3 shapes with flanges thicker than 1-1/2 inches (12.5 mm), Group
4 shapes, and Group 5 shapes; welded built-up members with web or flange plates exceeding 1-1/2
inches (12.5 mm) in thickness.
C. Protected Zone: Areas of members and connections of the seismic load resisting system (SLRS)
designated on the drawings where discontinuities created by fabrication and erection operations,
installation of welded shear studs, decking attachments which penetrate beam flanges and other
structural and non-structural welded, bolted, screwed and shot-in attachments are restricted per
AISC 340, Section 7.4.

1.4 SUBMITTALS
A. Submit under provisions of Division 01 Section "General Requirements."

B. Shop drawings for structural steel fabrications shall be submitted for review prior to fabrication.
Examples include, but are not limited to:
1. Complete fabrication and erection plans and procedures giving full information on
aspects of the erection which will effect alignment, plumb and dimensional
accuracy of the structure.
2. Connections including size and spacing of bolts and welds.
3. Indicate profiles, sizes, spacing, and locations of structural members, openings,
camber and attachments. Indicate welded connections with AWS welding
symbols. Indicate net weld lengths. Details of welding materials, equipment,
sequence and technique to be used. Shop and erection details incorporating
seismic critical welds shall include explicit references to corresponding weld
procedure specifications.
4. The Subcontractor shall survey, review and confirm as-built conditions prior to
developing shop drawings. Field modifications to suit as-built conditions shall be a
the Subcontractor’s expense.
C. Welding Procedure Specifications: Subcontractor shall submit welding procedure specifications
(WPS) for each shop and field welding joint type and process to the Project Manager and the
University's Testing Agency for review.
1. The WPS shall be prepared and signed by a welding professional whose
qualifications include a minimum of 5 years experience with the welding
technologies proposed.
2. The WPS shall include, at a minimum, the information specified in AWS 01.1,
Section 3 and the supplemental provisions of Annex H.
3. Prequalified WPS may be used provided they meet the requirements of AWS
D1.1, Section 3 for prequalified welds.
4. Any single deviation from the AWS 01.1 requirements for prequalified welds shall
necessitate qualification by test per AWS 01.1, Section 4. WPS that are qualified
by testing shall conform the additional requirements of AWS 01.1, Annex IV and
shall include the corresponding Procedure Qualification Records (PQRs).
5. WPS for seismic critical welds shall conform to the additional requirements of
AWS D1.8, Section 6.1.
D. Welder Performance Qualification Records (WPQR): Subcontractor shall submit WPQR for each
shop and field welder to the University's Testing Agency for review.
E. Welders' Certificates: Documentation certifying each welder employed on the work meets AWS
qualifications.
F. Manufacturer's Certificate: Submit certification that manufactured products (including bolts, nuts
and washers) meet or exceed specified requirements. Manufactured products are to be delivered in

unopened containers. Certification numbers must appear on product containers for bolts, nuts and
washers and the numbers shall correspond to the identification numbers on the Manufacturer's
Certificate. The Manufacturer's symbol and grade markings must appear on bolts, nuts and washers.
Submit manufacturer’s certification that structural shapes contain specified percentage recycled
material.
G. Product data: Submit certification that manufactured products meet or exceed specified
requirements.
1. Weld filler material including filler metal Charpy V-Notch test values, electrodes,
fluxes and shield gases.
2. Prime paint.
3. Welded studs.
H. Mill Test Reports: Submit mill test reports indicating structural strength, destructive and
nondestructive test analysis and chemical analyses from each heat of steel used in the work.

1.5 QUALITY ASSURANCE


A. Fabricate structural steel members in accordance with AISC specifications.
B. Welders shall be qualified in accordance with AWS D1.1 for each process, position and joint
configuration.
C. Maintain one copy of each referenced document on site.
D. Survey anchor bolts for location and elevation prior to casting concrete.
E. Fabricator Qualifications: The Company shall submit written documentation of experience in
performing the work of this Section prior to award of the Subcontract.
F. Erector Qualifications: Company with a documented experience in performing the work of this
Section.
G. The design of connections not detailed on the Drawings shall be under the direct supervision of a
Structural Engineer experienced in design of this work and licensed in the State of California.

1.6 TESTS AND INSPECTIONS


A. Notification:
1. The Subcontractor shall notify the University's Testing Agency of work to be
tested and inspected. Notification shall be sufficiently in advance to allow
scheduling of tests and inspections, but not less than 24 hours.
2. The Subcontractor shall immediately notify the Project Manager if the University's
Testing Agency indicates that quality assurance tests and inspection requirements
have not been met.
1) Review WPQR in accordance with AWS D1.1 and D1.8 for the welds to be
performed.

2) Confirm welding equipment settings, and voltage and amperage at point of
welding.
3) Perform visual inspection of shop and field welds in accordance with ANSI/AISC
341, Appendix Q, Section Q5.1. Inspections for items marked P (Perform) for both
QC and QA inspections shall be the performed by the University's Testing
Agency. Acceptance criteria for visually inspected welds shall be in accordance
with AWS D1.1, Section 6.
4) Perform nondestructive tests (NDT) of shop and field welds in accordance with
ANSI/AISC 341, Appendix Q, Section Q5.2, except as noted below. Provide NDT
equipment as required to perform specified tests.
a) Ultrasonic testing (UT) shall conform to AWS D1.8, Section 7.10.
b) The rate of ultrasonic testing on complete jOint penetration (CJP)
groove welds may be reduced to 25-percent for an individual welder or weld-
ing operator after sufficient project experience is demonstrated per Appendix
Q, subsection Q5.2g. However, no reduction in testing frequency shall be per-
mitted for demand critical welds.
c) Magnetic Particle (MP) testing shall conform to AWS D1.8, Section 7.9.
d) The rate of magnetic particle testing on CJP groove welds may be reduced
to 1 O-percent for an individual welder or welding operator after sufficient
project experience is demonstrated per Appendix Q, subsection Q5.2h.
However, no reduction in testing frequency shall be permitted for demand
critical welds.
b. High-Strength Bolting Tests and Inspections:
1) Sample and test high strength bolts, nuts and washers in accordance with the
requirements of the Specification for Structural Joints Using ASTM A 325 or A
490 Bolts.
2) Inspect installation of high strength bolts per ANSI/AISC 341, Appendix Q,
Section Q5.3. Inspections for items marked P (Perform) for both QC and QA
inspections shall be the performed by the University's Testing Agency.
c. Welded and bolted connections that fail to meet the acceptance criteria specified shall
be re-inspected and/or re-tested after corrections have been made by the Subcontractor.
d. Welded Studs: Inspect size, number, placement and welding of welded studs in
accordance with Section 7 of AWS D1.1.
e. Deformed Bar Anchors: Inspect size, number, placement and welding of deformed bar
anchors in accordance with the manufacturer's ICC report.
f. Confirm structural and non-structural connections do not occur in the protected zones
of the SLRS, except as indicated on the Drawings.

g. The University's Testing Agency shall review Subcontractor quality control test and
inspection reports.

1.7 SUBCONTRACTOR'S QUALITY CONTROL TESTS AND INSPECTIONS:


1. General: Quality control tests and inspections shall be the responsibility of the
Subcontractor. Where required herein, the Subcontractor shall retain a testing
agency, referred to herein as the Subcontractor's Testing Agency, to demonstrate
that quality control conforms to the requirements of the Contract Documents.
Quality Control Test and Inspection Reports shall be prepared and submitted for
review.
2. Welding Quality Control Inspections: The Subcontractor's Testing Agency shall
perform visual inspection of welding per ANSI/AISC 341, Appendix Q, and
Section Q5.1.
a. Personnel performing quality control inspections of welding shall meet the minimum
qualifications specified in AWS D1.8, Section 7.
b. The Subcontractor's Testing Agency need not perform inspections for items marked P
(Perform) for both QC and QA inspections. These inspections will be performed by the
University's Testing Agency.
3. High-Strength Bolting Quality Control Inspections: The Subcontractor's Testing
Agency shall perform visual inspection of high-strength bolting per ANSIIAISC
341, Appendix Q, Section Q5,3, a, The Subcontractor's Testing Agency need not
perform inspections for items marked P (Perform) for both QC and QA
inspections, These inspections will be performed by the University's Testing
Agency,
4. Tension Tests: The Subcontractor's Testing Agency shall conduct one tension test
and one bend test in accordance with ASTM A 370 for each heat of structural steel
not accompanied by certified mill analysis reports, Test reports shall be reviewed
by the University's Testing Agency before placement of steel.
5. Filler Metal Toughness Tests: The Subcontractor's Testing Agency shall test each
type of filler metal not accompanied by the manufacturer's certificate of
conformance for the filler metal toughness requirements in Part 2 of this
specification, Test procedures shall conform to ANSIIAISC 341, Appendix X,

1.8 SUBCONTRACTOR'S ENGINEERING SERVICES


A. General: Where engineering services are required herein, the Subcontractor shall retain a Structural
Engineer registered in the State of California, referred to herein as the Subcontractor's Engineer.

1. Where explicitly allowed, a Civil Engineer registered in the State of California is
acceptable as the Subcontractor's Engineer.
2. Documents prepared by the Subcontractor's Engineer shall be stamped and signed.
B. Shoring: The Subcontractor's Engineer shall design, detail, inspect, and provide scheduled procedures
for shoring of composite steel framing, The design shall conform to the applicable Federal, State and
local requirements, Drawings shall include detailed procedures and schedules for installation,
sequencing and removal of shoring,

1.9 FIELD MEASUREMENTS


A. Verify that field measurements are as indicated on the Shop Drawings.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

2.1 STEEL
A. Structural steel furnished for each location shall provide the minimum yield point given in the
drawings, shall conform to the applicable ASTM steel specification, shall meet the requirements of
the Municipality and shall be suitable for use in welded structures and shall meet the requirements
1. Structural Steel : Grade 43 Minimum Yield strength 275N/mm2
2. Built-Up Steel members : Grade 50 Minimum Yield Strength 375N/mm2

2.2 PAINT
A. Shop and field-applied paint where designated in the Drawings, specified herein, and where required
by the applicable Municipality shall be selected from the following or versions complying with all
applicable governmental environmental regulations:
1. Nonconforming work may be rejected by Client, Architect or Engineer/ Project
Manager at any time, regardless of prior acceptance in shop drawings, prior
inspection, inclusions in certificates of payments.
2. Zinc Primer
3. Polyurethane
4. Cold Galvanizing.
B. All exposed steel to be protected from weathering. For Fire protection of exposed steel, intumescent
paint to be used. Color of paint for steel exposed to view shall be selected by the Architect.

2.3 WELDING MATERIAL

A. Welding materials shall conform to AWS A5.1, A5.5, A5.17, A5.18, A5.20, A5.23, A5.28 or A5.29.
Welding electrodes which have been wet or contaminated by grease or other substances deleterious
to welding shall not be used in the work.
B. Welding electrodes for welding of stainless steel to stainless or carbon steel shall be E308L

2.4 STUDS
A. Material and equipment for welded studs and stud shear connectors shall conform to AWS D1.1 and
municipality standards.

2.5 BOLTING MATERIAL


A. General: Bolts, nuts and washers for a given grade and diameter of bolt shall come from a single
manufacturer. For each diameter, only one grade may be used. Bolting materials shall be shipped to
the jobsite in the bolt manufacturer's unopened containers with nuts and washers assembled and lot
numbers marked on the container
B. Bolts: Bolts shall conform to ASTM A325M or A490M. 1. Bolts shall be cold forged with rolled
threads.
C. Nuts: Nuts for A325M bolts shall conform to ASTM A563M Grade C, D or DH or ASTM A194M
Grade 2 or 2H. Nuts for A490M bolts shall conform to ASTM A563M Grade DH or ASTM A194M
Grade 2H.
D. Washers: Hardened washers shall conform to ASTM F436M (and the requirements of the RCSC
Specification
E. Galvanized Bolting Materials: Bolts shall conform to ASTM A325M Type I, nuts shall be ASTM
A563M Grade DH or A194M Grade 2H only. Bolts, nuts and washers shall be galvanized under the
supervision of the bolt manufacturer in accordance with either ASTM B695 Class 50 or ASTM A153
Class C. Nuts must be tapped after hot dip galvanizing or slightly over tapped before mechanical
depositing and shall be supplied lubricated with #139 wax or equivalent. The galvanized bolt, washer,
nut assembly shall be tested by the bolt manufacturer in accordance with ASTM A325M Section 8.5
and shipped and stored in plastic bags in closed containers.

2.6 GALVANIZING
A. Galvanized steel members shall be hot-dip galvanized in accordance with ASTM A123M, ASTM
A153M as applicable.

2.7 LACQUER
A. Milled Surfaces: Coat with Blue Lacquer available locally by approved companies.

2.8 DRILLED-IN ANCHORS

A. Epoxy Capsule Anchors: Hilti HVA Adhesive Anchor
B. Expansion Bolts: Hilti Kwik-Bolt II Stud Anchors.

2.9 COUPLERS FOR CONCRETE REINFORCING BARS


A. Concrete reinforcing bar couplers which are to be welded to structural steel shall be Lenton Half
Couplers as manufactured by Erico Products or other accepted by Engineer/ Project Manager.

2.10 STAINLESS STEEL


A. Stainless steel shall be type 18-8 conforming to AISI Grade 304 or 316.

2.11 DEFORMED ANCHOR BARS


A. Deformed bars to be stud welded to structural steel shall be D2L anchors as manufactured by Nelson
Stud Division of TRW or other accepted by Engineer/ Project Manager.

2.12 TFE SLIDE BEARINGS A. TFE slide bearing assemblies shall be Bal-Slide Standard Bearing
Elements

2.13 SOURCE QUALITY CONTROL


A. Shop inspection and testing will be performed under provisions of Division 01.
B. Subcontractor shall furnish samples as required for testing at no additional cost.
1. Furnish 3 additional high strength anchor bolts to permit random sampling and
testing by Testing Laboratory.
2. Ultrasonically inspect base metal thicker than 1½ inches for discontinuities behind
welds in accordance with CBC Section 1704.3. Inspect column baseplates thicker
than 1-1/2 inches when column flanges are complete penetration welded to
baseplates.
3. Nondestructive test complete penetration groove welds larger than 5/16 inches by
ultrasonic methods for conformance with the weld quality and standard of
acceptance of AWS D1.1 for welds subject to tensile stress.
4. Faulty and Defective Welding: Any welding performed without inspection, or not in
compliance with the approved WPS, or displaying cracks, slag inclusion, lack of fusion,
undercut or other defects defined by the AWS, ascertained by visual or nondestructive means,
shall be removed and properly replaced by the subcontractor and re-inspected by the Testing
Agency all at the subcontractor’s expense.
C. Periodically, inspect and test stud welding as required by CBC Section 1704; in accordance with
AWS D1.1 review pre-production testing and qualification, periodically inspect welding and
perform verification inspection and testing.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1 PREPARATION
A. Provide anchor bolts and other items embedded in concrete.
B. Furnish and install temporary supports and internal braces necessary to support structural steel
during erection. Temporary supports and braces shall be adequate for anticipated wind, seismic,
equipment and erection loads. Remove temporary shoring after the steel erection is complete.
C. After completion of welds, remove weld tabs (spillage dams) in accordance with AWS D1.1
provisions for dynamically loaded structures. After completion of full penetration groove welds,
remove backing bars in accordance with AWS D1.1 provisions for dynamically loaded structures,
inspect the weld and reinforce the groove weld with a fillet weld. Peening of thick welds shall be
performed in accordance with AWS D1.1.

3.2 EXAMINATION
A. Verify that field conditions are acceptable and are ready to receive work.
B. Beginning of installation means Subcontractor accepts that existing conditions meet the
requirements for installation.

3.3 ERECTION
A. Erect structural steel in accordance with the AISC Specifications for Structural Steel Buildings,
except as modified herein. Where members cannot be properly assembled due to mis-fabrication or
deformation due to handling or transportation, the condition shall be reported to the University with
a proposed method of correction for approval. Erect steel to the lines and grades indicated on the
drawings and in accordance with the Erection Drawings.
B. During erection beams and vertical bracing are to be secured with at least two bolts prior to
releasing the hoisting cable.
C. Perform high strength bolting in accordance with the appropriate ASTM specification. Complete
high strength bolting before field welding.
D. Do not field cut or alter structural members without approval of the University.
E. After erection, prime welds, abrasions, and surfaces not shop primed, except surfaces to be in
contact with concrete.
F. Grout base plates with non-shrink grout. Clean concrete bearing surfaces from bond-reducing
materials, and roughen if necessary to improve bond to surfaces. Clean the bottom surface of base
plate. Set base plate on wedges or other adjustable devices. After the base plate has been positioned

and plumbed, tighten the anchor bolts. Pack grout solidly between the bearing surfaces to ensure
that no voids remain.
G. Where field welding to existing structural members is required, the Subcontractor shall confirm the
weldability of the existing steel by cutting or drilling samples and having them tested by the
Subcontractor's Independent Testing Laboratory. The testing laboratory shall recommend the
location for taking samples, provide a report on weldability, recommend the type of electrode and
weld and inspect the final welds. The Subcontractor will be responsible for preparing the existing
steel for welding and touch of the surfaces.

3.4 ERECTION TOLERANCES


A. Tolerances shall be in accordance with the AISC Code of Standard Practice. Crane rail tolerances
shall comply with CMAA Specification 70.

3.5 INSPECTION AND TESTING


A. Inspection and testing will be performed under provisions of Division 01 Section "Special
Procedures." The Subcontractor shall be responsible for in-house visual inspection and
implementing a quality control program.
B. Independent Testing Agency will inspect and test field high strength bolting and welding in
accordance with Paragraph 2.5.

3.6 WASTE MANAGEMENT


A. Conform to Division 01 Section "Construction Waste Management”.
B. Collect scraps and cut-offs and place designated areas for recycling.
C. Separate other waste materials in accordance with the Waste Management Plan and place designated
areas for recycling.

1.4 DESIGN / PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS


A. AISI Specifications: Comply with calculated structural characteristics of steel deck according to
AISI's North American Specification for the Design of Cold-Formed Steel Structural Members
and SDI RDDM Roof Deck Design Manual.

B. Roof Decking:
1. Deck shall meet the minimum design gage and yield strength specified on the drawings,
or meet minimum specified section properties at specified yield strength.
2. Whenever possible, the deck shall be multi-span.
C. Factory Mutual Guide Listing: Provide steel roof deck evaluated by FM and listed in its
"Approval Guide, Building Materials" for Class 1 fire rating and Class 1-90 windstorm ratings.
D. Fire-Test-Response Characteristics: Where indicated, provide steel deck units that are approved
by UL, LLC and listed in the UL and ULC Fire Resistance Directories.

1.5 SUBMITTALS
A. Submit under provisions of Section 01 30 00 - Administrative Requirements.
B. Product Data: Manufacturer's data sheets on each product to be used, including:
1. Deck information for the proposed deck units .
2. Preparation instructions and recommendations.
3. Storage and handling requirements and recommendations.
4. Erection instructions.

C. Shop Drawings: Show location, connections, bearing on supports, methods of anchoring,
attachment of accessories, adjusting plate details and the manufacturer's erection instructions
and pertinent details.
D. Manufacturer's Certificates: Certify products meet or exceed specified requirements.

1.6 QUALITY ASSURANCE


A. Manufacturer Qualifications: Member in good standing of Steel Deck Institute (SDI).
B. Testing Agency Qualifications: An independent agency qualified according to ASTM E 329 for
testing indicated.
C. Welding: Qualify procedures and personnel according to AWS D1.3, Structural Welding Code -
Sheet Steel.

1.7 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING


A. Separate sheets and store on dry wood sleepers; slope for positive drainage. Cut plastic wrap to
encourage ventilation. Protect with a waterproof covering and ventilate to avoid condensation.

1.8 SEQUENCING
A. Ensure that locating templates and other information required for installation of products of
this section are furnished to affected trades in time to prevent interruption of construction
progress.
B. Coordinate installation of sound-absorbing insulation strips and non-corrosive spacers (lath
when required) in the topside ribs of cellular acoustical deck as specified in Section 07 51 00 -
Built-Up Bituminous Roofing to ensure protection of insulation strips against damage from
effects of weather and other causes.

PART 2 PRODUCTS

2.1 ROOF DECK


A. Steel Roof Deck - General: Fabricate deck to comply with SDI RD - Standard for Steel Roof Deck,
with the minimum section properties indicated.
B. Deck Materials
1. Sheet steel for galvanized deck shall conform to ASTM A 653/A 653M Structural Steel,
with a minimum yield strength as requested by manufacturer.
2. structural sheet steels or high strength low alloy steels in accordance with AISI S100,

Section A2.
3. Sheet steel for uncoated or phosphatized top/painted bottom deck shall conform to
ASTM A 1008 / A 1008M with a minimum yield strength of (230 MPa) or other structural
sheet steels or high strength low alloy steels in accordance with AISI S100, Section A2.
4. Sheet steel for accessories shall conform to ASTM A 653/A 653M, Structural Steel for
structural accessories, ASTM A 653/A 653M Commercial Steel for non-structural
accessories, or ASTM A 1008 / A 1008M for either structural or non-structural
accessories. Other structural sheet steels or high strength low alloy steels shall be
permitted in accordance with AISI S100, Section A2. All sheet steel for accessories shall
have a minimum specified yield strength of (230 MPa).
C. Deck Finish:
1. Galvanized coating shall comply with ASTM A 924/A 924M with zinc coating as as per
approved system.

2.2 ACCESSORIES
A. Column closures, end closures, side closures and cover plates shall be the standard type
provided by the deck manufacturer unless indicated otherwise on the Drawings.
B. Galvanizing Repair Paint for Roof Decks: High-zinc-dust content paint for re-galvanizing welds in
galvanized steel conforming to ASTM A 780
C. Fasteners: As manufactured by Hilti, Builder, Simpson Strong-Tie or approved equal.
D. Flexible Closure Strips.

PART 3 EXECUTION

3.1 EXAMINATION
A. Do not install roof deck until supporting construction is in place.
B. Examine support framing and field conditions for compliance with requirements for installation
tolerances and other conditions affecting performance of work of this section.
C. If supporting construction is the responsibility of another installer, notify Architect of
unsatisfactory preparation before proceeding.

3.2 PREPARATION
A. Clean surfaces thoroughly prior to installation.
B. Locate deck bundles to prevent overloading of support members.

3.3 INSTALLATION - GENERAL
A. Install deck panels and accessories in accordance with the Contract Documents approved
installation drawings and requirements of this Section.
B. Place deck panels on structural supports and adjust to final position with ends aligned. Attach
firmly to the supports immediately after placement in order to form a safe working platform.
C. Cut and neatly fit deck units and accessories around openings and other work projecting
through or adjacent to the decking.
D. Trades that subsequently cut unscheduled openings through the deck are responsible for
reinforcing the openings.

3.4 INSTALLATION - ROOF DECK


A. Install and fasten deck and accessories in accordance with the Contract Documents, approved
installation drawings and requirements of ANSI/SDI RD.
B. End Bearing: Install deck ends over supports with a minimum end bearing of 1-1/2 inches (38
mm) unless otherwise shown on approved installation drawings.
C. Side Closures: Fasten to supporting structure and deck in accordance with the Contract
Documents, approved installation drawings and requirements of ANSI/SDI RD.
D. Ridge and valley plates, flat plates at changes of deck direction and sump pans, shall be
fastened to the deck in accordance with the Contract Documents, approved installation
drawings and requirements of ANSI/SDI RD.

3.5 INSPECTION AND REPAIR


A. Before roof insulation placement, the deck shall be inspected for tears, dents, or other damage
that may prevent the deck from acting as a tight and substantial form. Replace decking which
has been damaged or permanently deflected.
B. Galvanizing Repairs: Prepare and repair damaged galvanized coatings on both surfaces of deck
with galvanized repair paint.
C. Repair Painting: Apply repair paint, of same color as adjacent shop-primed deck, to bottom
surfaces of deck exposed to view.

3.6 PROTECTION
A. Protect installed products until completion of project.
B. Touch-up, repair or replace damaged products before Substantial Completion.

SECTION 05 50 00
METAL FABRICATIONS

1.1 RELATED DOCUMENTS


A. Drawings and general provisions of the Contract, including General and Supplementary
Conditions and other Division 1 Specification Sections, apply to this Section.

1.2 SUMMARY

A. Furnish all labor, materials, tools and equipment, and perform all services and operations
necessary to execute the work of this section to install all miscellaneous metal
components and accessories, anchors and fastenings and performing all operations in
connection with metal fabrication work.
1. Metal fabrication work is defined as including any items shown on the Drawings and/or
specified herein, fabricated from metal shapes, plates, bars, pipes, tubes, casting and
roll- formed shaped which are not a part of an overall system specified in any other
Section of these Specifications.

B. This Section includes all metal fabrications and supplementary items necessary for
installation, not covered under other section; and not limited to the following:
1. Steel framing and Anchor bolts, steel pipe sleeves, and wedge -type inserts indicated
to be cast into concrete.
2. Drilled inserts.
3. Steel support system for service equipment fixation
4. Rough hardware.
5. Edgings, Loose bearing and leveling plates.
6. Protection rails, Steel Grills & Grating, and Trench Covers.
7. Steel framing and supports for countertops, miscellaneous trims, framing and
supports.

1.3 REFERENCE STANDARDS

A. The prevailing standard for all works in this Section shall be ANSI (American National
Standards Institute), unless otherwise indicated. Acceptable international standards that
may otherwise be referenced include:

1.4 SUBMITTALS

A. Product Data: Manufacturer/fabricator’s technical literature for each product and system
indicated. Include manufacturer/ fabricator's specifications for materials, finishes,

construction details, installation instructions, and recommendations for maintenance.

B. Shop Drawings: Show details of fabrication and installation, including plans, elevations,
sections, details of components and attachments to other work. Distinguish between
shop and field-assembled work.

C. Samples representative of materials and finished products as may be requested by


Engineer/ Project Manager.

D. Welding Certifications: Certificates for welding procedures and personnel.

E. Product Test Reports: Written reports based on evaluation of comprehensive tests


performed by qualified testing agency indicating that each product complies with
requirements.

F. Field Quality Control Reports: Written report of testing and inspection required by
“Field
Quality Control”.

G. Manufacturer/Fabricator's Project Acceptance Document: Certification that products


are approved, acceptable, suitable for use in specific locations, for specific details,
and for applications indicated, specified, or required.

H. Qualification Data: For manufacturer/fabricator and installer: For firms and persons
specified in "Quality Assurance" Article to demonstrate their capabilities and experience.
Include lists of similar completed projects.

1.5 QUALITY ASSURANCE

A. Manufacturer/Fabricator Qualifications: Manufacturer/fabricator with not less than 5


years experience with successful production of products and systems similar to scope
of this Project, with a record of successful in-service performance and completion of
projects for a period of not less than 5 years, and with sufficient production capability,
facilities and personnel, to produce required Work.

B. Installer Qualifications:
1. Experience: Installer with not less than 5 years experience in performing specified
Work similar to scope of this Project, with a record of successful in-service

performance and completion of projects for a period of not less than 5 years, and with
sufficient production capability, facilities and personnel, to produce required Work.
2. Supervision: Installer shall maintain a competent supervisor who is at Project during
times specified Work is in progress, and, who is experienced in installing systems
similar to type and scope required for Project.

C. Manufacturer/Fabricator's Technical Representative Qualification: Direct technical


employee of manufacturer/ fabricator with at least 5 years experience in providing
recommendations, observations, evaluations, and problem diagnostics. Sales
representatives are not acceptable.

D. Welding Qualifications: Qualify procedures and personnel according to following:


1. AWS D1.1/D1.1M, "Structural Welding Code - Steel".

2. AWS D1.3/D1.3M, "Structural Welding Code - Sheet Steel".


3. AWS D1.6/D1.6M, "Structural Welding Code - Stainless Steel".
4. AWS D1.2/D1.2M, "Structural Welding Code - Aluminum".

1.6 PROJECT CONDITIONS

A. Hot-Weather Limitations for installation of metal fabrications: Comply with concerned


area authority regulations.

B. Field Measurements: Where products and systems are indicated to fit walls and other
construction, verify dimensions by field measurements before fabrication and indicate
measurements on Shop Drawings. Coordinate fabrication schedule with construction
progress to avoid delaying the Work.

1.7 COORDINATION

A. Coordinate installation of products and systems with interfacing and adjoining


construction to provide a successful installation without failure.

B. Coordinate installation of anchorages for metal fabrications. Furnish setting drawings,


templates, and directions for installing anchorages, including sleeves, concrete inserts,
anchor bolts, and items with integral anchors that are to be embedded in concrete or
masonry. Deliver such items to Project site in time for installation.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

2.1 MATERIALS, GENERAL

A. Single Source Responsibility: Furnish each type of product from single manufacturer/
fabricator. Provide secondary materials only as recommended by manufacturer/ fabricator
of primary materials.

2.2 FERROUS METAL MATERIALS

A. Metal Surfaces, General: Provide materials with smooth surfaces, without seam marks,
roller marks, rolled trade names, stains, discolorations, blemishes, or other imperfections
where exposed to view on finished units. Do not use steel sheet with variations in flatness
exceeding those permitted by referenced standards for stretcher-leveled sheet.
1. Provide uncoated ferrous metal at interior exposures.
2. Provide galvanized metal where indicated on drawings or if not indicated, then
at unconditioned spaces and at exterior exposures.

B. Steel Plates, Shapes, and Bars: ASTM A 36/A 36M.

C. Steel Tubing: ASTM A 500, cold-formed steel tubing.

D. Steel Pipe: ASTM A 53/A 53M, standard weight (Schedule 40) unless another weight
is indicated or required by structural loads.

E. Rolled-Steel Floor Plate: ASTM A 786/A 786M, rolled from plate complying
with ASTM A 36/A 36M or ASTM A 283/A 283M, Grade C or D.

F. Stainless-Steel Sheet, Strip, and Plate: ASTM A 240/A 240M or ASTM A 666, Type
316L.

G. Stainless-Steel Bars and Shapes: ASTM A 276, Type 316L.

H. Rolled-Stainless-Steel Floor Plate: ASTM A 793.

I. Cast Iron: Either gray iron, ASTM A 48/A 48M, or malleable iron, ASTM A 47/ A 47M,
unless otherwise indicated.

E. Aluminum sheet cladding shading ribs: made of 4mm thick composite powder coated
aluminum, factory finished, with following specifications:
1. Aluminum Composite Panels: 4-mm thick aluminium composite panels composed
of proprietary core sandwiched between two skins of 0.5mm thick aluminium sheet.
a. Weight: 5.5 kg/sq.m.
b. Thermal Expansion: 2.4mm/m/100oK
c. Fire Behaviour: Non-inflammable, with fire resistant core ASTM
E84 d. Sound transmission loss: 25dB to ASTM E 413.
e. Tensile strength: 5 kg/mm2
f. Finish: PVDF Kynar or PVF-3 Durasol finish on front and mill finish on rear
sidColor to Engineer/ Project Manager’s approval.

F. Aluminum Extrusions: ASTM B 221 (ASTM B 221M), alloy and temper recommended
by manufacturer for type of use and finish indicated. All aluminium sheets to come from
the same patch. Finish to be:
1. Anodized Coating System: Manufacturer's standard shall performance requirements
of AAMA 2605.

G. Color: as directed by Engineer/ Project Manager.

H. Fasteners: Self-tapping screws, bolts, nuts, self-locking rivets and bolts, end-welded
studs, and other suitable fasteners designed to withstand design loads and as
recommended by the panel manufacturer.
1. Use stainless-steel fasteners. Type 18-8 stainless, recommended by manufacturer
for specific condition.
2. Provide exposed fasteners with heads matching color of panel by means of plastic caps
or factory-applied coating.

3. Provide metal-backed neoprene washers under heads of exposed fasteners located
on weather side of panels.

I. Accessories: Unless otherwise specified, provide components required for a complete


assembly including trim, clips, covers, flashings, sealants, gaskets, fillers, closure strips,
and similar items. Match materials and finishes of panels.
1. Sealing Tape: Pressure-sensitive, 100 percent solids, polyisobutylene compound
sealing tape with release paper backing. Provide permanently elastic, nonsag, non
toxic, nonstaining tape.
2. Joint Sealant: One-part elastomeric polyurethane, or silicone-rubber sealant as
recommended by panel manufacturer.
3 …Gaskets: Gaskets shall be dry seal santoprene pressure type.

2.4 FASTENERS

A. Fastener Type and Material: Select fasteners for type, grade, and class required to produce
connections suitable for anchoring fabrications to other types of construction indicated.

B. Steel Bolts and Nuts: Regular hexagon-head bolts, ASTM A 307/F 568M, Grade
A/ ASTM F 568M, Property Class 4.6; with hex nuts, ASTM A 563/A 563M; and,
where

indicated, flat washers.

C. Stainless Steel Bolts and Nuts: Regular hexagon-head annealed stainless-steel bolts,
ASTM F 593/F 738M; with hex nuts, ASTM F 594/F 836M; and, where indicated,
flat washers; Alloy Group 2 (A4) for Type 316.

D. Anchor Bolts: ASTM F 1554, Grade 36, of dimensions indicated; with nuts, ASTM A
563/ A 563M; and, where indicated, flat washers. Hot-dip galvanize or provide
mechanically deposited, zinc coating where item being fastened is indicated to be
galvanized.

E. Plain Washers: Round carbon steel, ASME B18.22.1/ASME B18.22M.

F. Lock Washers: Helical, spring type carbon steel, ASME B18.21.1/ASME B18.21.2M.

G. Eyebolts: ASTM A 489.

J. Wood Screws: ASME B18.6.1, flat head, carbon steel.

2.5 ANCHORS

A. General: Provide anchors capable of sustaining, without failure, a load equal to 6 times
load imposed when installed in unit masonry and 4 times load imposed when installed in
concrete, as determined by testing according to ASTM E 488, conducted by a qualified
independent testing agency.

B. Cast-in-Place Anchors in Concrete: Bolts, washers, and shims as needed, either threaded
type or wedge type unless otherwise indicated; galvanized ferrous castings,
either ASTM A 47/A 47M malleable iron or ASTM A 27/A 27M cast steel; hot-dip
galvanized according to ASTM F 2329.

C. Post-Installed Anchors: Torque-controlled expansion anchors or chemical anchors.


1. Material for Interior Locations: Carbon steel components zinc plated to comply
with
ASTM B 633 or ASTM F 1941/F 1941M, Class Fe/Zn 5, unless otherwise indicated.
2. Material for Exterior Locations: Alloy Group 2 (A4) for Type 316 stainless steel
bolts, ASTM F 593/F 738M, and nuts, ASTM F 594/F 836M.
3. Post-Tensioned Concrete Locations: Anchors shall not exceed 1 in (25 mm)
[Link] Structural Engineer’s written approval for all proposed anchors in
post-tensioned concrete prior to installation.

2.6 PAINT MATERIALS

A. Shop Primer for Ferrous Metal: Fast-curing, lead & chromate free, universal modified-
alkyd primer complying with performance requirements of FS TT-P-664, selected for
good resistance to normal atmospheric corrosion, compatibility with finish paint systems
indicated, and capability to provide a sound foundation for field-applied topcoats despite
prolonged exposure.

B. Galvanizing Repair Paint: High-zinc-dust-content paint for re-galvanizing welds in

galvanized steel, with dry film containing not less than 94 percent zinc dust by weight,
and complying with DOD-P-21035 or SSPC-Paint 20.

C. Bituminous Paint: Cold-applied asphalt mastic complying with SSPC-Paint 12, except
containing no asbestos fibers.

D. Separate dissimilar metals with bituminous paint or preformed dielectric separators,


which will prevent galvanic action.

E. Bituminous Paint: ASTM D 1187, cold-applied asphalt emulsion.

2.7 ACCESSORY ITEMS

A. Welding Rods and Bare Electrodes: Select according to AWS specifications for metal
alloy welded.

B. Concrete Materials and Properties: Comply with requirements in Division 3 Section


"Cast- in-Place Concrete" for normal-weight, air-entrained, ready-mix concrete with
minimum 28 day compressive strength of 3000 psi (210.92 k/cm), unless otherwise
indicated.

C. Cap for Concrete-Filled Pipe Bollard: ASTM F 626, domed aluminum alloy post caps.

D. Non-shrink, Non-metallic Grout: Factory-packaged, non-staining, non-corrosive, non-


gaseous grout complying with ASTM C 1107. Provide grout specifically recommended
by manufacturer/fabricator for interior and exterior applications.

2.8 FABRICATION, GENERAL

A. General: Fabricate metal fabrications, including clips, brackets and other components
necessary to support and anchor fabrications to supporting structure and to comply with
reqts indicated for design, dime, member sizes & spacing, details, finish and anchorage.
1. Join components by welding unless otherwise indicated.

B. Form metal fabrications from materials of size, thickness, and shapes indicated but not
less than that needed to comply with performance requirements indicated.

C. Work to dimensions indicated or accepted on shop drawings, using proven details of


fabrication and support. Use type of materials indicated or specified for various

components of each metal fabrication.

D. Form exposed work true to line & level with accurate angles, surfaces & straight sharp
edges.

E. Shop Assembly: Assemble items in shop to greatest extent possible to minimize field
splicing and assembly. Disassemble units only as necessary for shipping and handling
limitations. Use connections that maintain structural value of joined pieces.

F. Fabrication Requirements:
1. Shear and punch metals cleanly and accurately. Remove burrs and ease exposed edges
to a radius of approximately 1/32 in (0.8 mm) unless otherwise indicated. Remove
sharp or rough areas on exposed surfaces.
2. Cut, reinforce, drill, and tap metal fabrications as indicated to receive finish hardware,
screws, and similar items.
3. Form work true to line and level with accurate angles and surfaces and straight sharp
edges.
4. Form bent-metal corners to smallest radius possible without causing grain separation
or otherwise impairing work.

G. Exterior Requirements:
1. Allow for thermal movement resulting from 120 deg F (49 deg C) change (range)
in ambient and 180 deg F (82 deg C) surface temperatures by preventing buckling,
opening up of joints, overstressing of components, failure of connections, and other
detrimental effects. Base engineering calculation on surface temperatures of
materials due to both solar heat gain and nighttime-sky heat loss.
2. Fabricate hot-dip galvanized fabrications so that field assembly will be by bolted
connections and not welding.
3. Fabricate joints exposed to weather in a manner to exclude water, or provide weep
holes where water may accumulate.

H. Assembly Requirements:
1. Provide for anchorage of type indicated; coordinate with supporting structure.
Fabricate and space anchoring devices to secure metal fabrications rigidly in place and
to support indicated loads.

2. Form exposed connections with hairline joints, flush, smooth, using concealed
fasteners where possible. Where exposed fasteners are required, use Phillips flat-head
(countersunk) screws or bolts unless otherwise indicated. Locate joints where least
conspicuous.
3. Where units are indicated to be cast into concrete or built into masonry, equip
with integrally welded steel strap anchors, 1/4 in by 1/4 in (6 mm by 6 mm), with a
minimum
6 in (150 mm) embedment and 2 in (50 mm) hook, not less than 8 in (200 mm)
from ends and corners of units and 24 in (600 mm) on center, unless otherwise
indicated.
4. Complete fabrication prior to shop painting or hot-dip galvanizing.

I. Shop-Welded Connections: Cope components at connections to provide close fit, or


use fittings designed for this purpose. Weld all around at connections, including at fittings.
Weld corners & seams continuously to develop full strength of member to comply with
following:
1. Use materials and methods that minimize distortion and develop strength and

2.9 SHELF ANGLES

A. Fabricate shelf angles from steel angles of sizes indicated and for attachment to concrete
framing. Provide horizontally slotted holes to receive 3/4 in (19 mm) bolts, spaced not
more than 6 in (150 mm) from ends and 24 in (600 mm) on center, unless otherwise
indicated.

B. For cavity walls, provide vertical channel brackets to support angles from backup masonry
and concrete. Align expansion joints in angles with indicated control and expansion joints
in cavity-wall exterior wythe.

A. General: Provide steel framing and supports that are not a part of structural framework

B. Provide cutouts, fittings, and anchorages as needed to coordinate assembly and installation
with other work. Provide anchors, welded to trim, for embedding in concrete or masonry
construction, spaced not more than 6 in (150 mm) from each end, 6 in (150 mm) from
corners, and 24 in (600 mm) on center, unless otherwise indicated.

2.12 ROUGH HARDWARE

A. Furnish bent or otherwise custom-fabricated, bolts, plates, anchors, hangers, dowels, and
other miscellaneous steel and iron shapes as required for framing and supporting
woodwork, and for anchoring or securing woodwork to concrete or other structures.

B. Fabricate items to sizes, shapes & dimensions required. Furnish malleable-iron washers
for heads & nuts that bear on wood structural connections, and furnish steel washers
elsewhere.

2.13 TRENCH COVERS

A. Fabricate chequered floor plates from rolled-steel floor plate complying with ASTM A786
of 8-mm minimum thickness.

B. Include steel angel stiffeners and fixed and removable sections. Provide flush steel bar

A. Provide loose bearing and leveling plates for steel items bearing on masonry or concrete
construction, made flat, free from warps or twists, and of the required thickness and
bearing area. Drill plates to receive anchor bolts and for grouting as required. Galvanize
after fabrication.

2.16 FINISHES, GENERAL

A. Finish Quality Standard: Comply with NAAMM's "Metal Finishes Manual for

2.19 METAL FINISHES – POWDER COATING

A. Powder Coating - General: Provide coating matching approved samples. Factory-applied


metal coatings shall be applied in a facility acceptable to the coating manufacturer.
Galvanizer shall create a profile on the surface to provide adhesion for the coating.
All coating material shall be force cured in a calibrated oven capable of maintaining
curing temperatures per the coating manufacturer’s specification. Coating must meet or
exceed the criteria for the following categories as stipulated by the coatings manufacturer:
1. Primer coat shall be factory-applied polyamide epoxy primer. Apply primer within
12 hours after galvanizing at the same galvanizer’s plant in a controlled
environment meeting applicable environmental regulations and as recommended
by the primer coating manufacturer;
2. Finish coat shall be factory-applied color-pigmented architectural finish. Apply
finish coating at the galvanizer’s plant, in a controlled environment meeting
applicable environmental regulations and as recommended by the finish coating

manufacturer. Finish coat shall exhibit a rugosity (smoothness) not greater than 4 rug
(16-20 microns of variation) when measured by a profilometer over a 25mm straight
line on the surface of architectural and structural elements that are less than 24
pounds per running foot. Profilometer shall be capable of operating in 1 micron
increments;
3. Coatings shall be certified OTC/VOC compliant and conform to applicable
regulations and EPA standards;
4. Apply the galvanizing, primer, and coating within the same facility and provide
single- source responsibility for galvanizing, priming and finish coating;
5. Clean galvanized surface to create an acceptable profile for coatings. Galvanizer
shall certify that performance will be met without blast cleaning and coating will be
applied within 12 hours of galvanizing at the galvanizer’s plant. If blasted,
galvanizer shall certify that rugosity standards are met;
6. Primer shall meet or exceed the following performance criteria:

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1 EXAMINATION

A. Acceptance of Surfaces and Conditions: Examine substrates to receive metal fabrications


and associated Work for compliance with requirements and other conditions affecting
performance. Proceed only when unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected in a
manner complying with Contract Documents. Starting Work within a particular area will
be construed as acceptance of surface conditions.

3.2 INSTALLATION, GENERAL

A. Installation Quality Standards: In addition to standards listed elsewhere, perform Work


according to following, unless otherwise specified:
1. Respective manufacturer/fabricator’s written installation instructions.
2. Accepted submittals.

B. Control of Corrosion: Prevent galvanic action and other forms of corrosion by isolating
metals and other materials from direct contact with incompatible materials.

3.3 PREPARATION

A. General: Comply with manufacturer/fabricator’s instructions, recommendations and


specifications for cleaning and surface preparation. Surfaces shall have no defects,
contaminants, or errors which would result in poor or potentially defective installation
or would cause latent defects in Work.

3.4 INSTALLATION OF METAL FABRICATIONS

A. Fastening to In-Place Construction: Provide anchorage devices and fasteners where


necessary for securing metal fabrications to in-place construction. Include threaded
fasteners for concrete and masonry inserts, through bolts, lag bolts, and other connectors.

B. Cutting, Fitting, and Placement: Perform cutting, drilling, and fitting required for
installing metal fabrications. Set accurately in location, alignment, and elevation; with
edges and surfaces level, plumb, true, and free of rack; and measured from established
lines and levels.

C. Connections: Fit exposed connections accurately together to form hairline joints. Weld
connections that are not to be left as exposed joints but cannot be shop welded because
of shipping size limitations. Do not weld, cut, or abrade surfaces of exterior units that have
been coated or finished after fabrication and are intended for bolted or screwed field
connections or other means without further cutting or fitting.

D. Field Welding: Weld connections continuously to develop full strength of member to


comply with following requirements:
1. Use materials and methods that minimize distortion and develop strength and
corrosion resistance of base metals.
2. Obtain fusion without undercut or overlap.
3. Remove flux immediately.
4. At exposed connections, finish exposed welds and surfaces smooth and blended so
no roughness shows after finishing and contour of welded surface matches that of
adjacent surface.

E. Corrosion Protection: Coat concealed aluminum surfaces that will come into contact with
grout, concrete, masonry, wood, or dissimilar metals with heavy coat of bituminous paint.

3.5 SETTING LOOSE PLATES

A. Clean concrete and masonry bearing surfaces of bond-reducing materials, and roughen
to improve bond to surfaces. Clean bottom surface of bearing plates.

B. Set loose leveling and bearing plates on wedges or other adjustable devices. After
the bearing members have been positioned and plumbed, tighten the anchor bolts.

C. Do not remove wedges or shims, but if protruding, cut off flush with the edge of the bearing
plate before packing with grout.

3.6 INSTALLING MISCELLANEOUS FRAMING AND SUPPORTS

A. General: Install framing and supports to comply with requirements of items being
supported, including manufacturers' written instructions and requirements indicated on
Shop Drawings.

3.7 INSTALLATION OF MISCELLANEOUS ITEMS

A. General: Install framing and supports to comply with requirements of items being
supported, including manufacturer/fabricators' written instructions and requirements
indicated on Shop Drawings.

B. Stair Nosings: Install with anchorage system to comply with manufacturer/fabricator's


written instructions. Center nosings on tread widths to within 3 in (75 mm) of ends. Align
nosings flush with riser faces and level with tread surfaces.

3.8 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL

A. Manufacturer/Fabricator’s Field Service: Manufacturer/fabricator’s qualified technical


representative shall inspect first day’s Work and periodically inspect Work to ensure
installation is proceeding in accordance with manufacturer/fabricator’s designs,
recommendations, instructions and warranty requirements. Representative shall submit
written reports of each visit indicating observations, findings, and conclusions of
inspection.

B. Site Damage Repair / Replacement:
1. Any damage to metal elements caused during handling and installation, or by subsequent
site operations, is to be rectified immediately. Obtain approval before commencing
extensive repairs or replacements.
2. Damaged components that are unacceptable for repair shall be replaced.

C. Adjusting and Cleaning


1. After removal of protective coverings, clean and maintain all metal surfaces in
accordance with manufacturer’s recommendations until Practical Completion.
2. All maintenance is to be in accordance with procedures detailed in the Operations
and Maintenance Manual.
3. Maintenance records shall be kept until the end of the Defects Liability Period.
The Client is then responsible for maintaining records beyond this time.
4. Remove and replace work that cannot be successfully cleaned.

D. Galvanised Surfaces: Clean field welds, bolted connections, and abraded areas and repair
galvanizing to comply with ASTM A 780.

3.9 TOUCH-UP REPAIR

A. Touch-Up Painting: Immediately after erection, clean field welds, bolted connections,
and abraded areas. Paint uncoated and abraded areas with same material as used for shop
painting

to comply with SSPC-PA 1 for touching up shop-painted surfaces.


1. Apply by brush or spray to provide a minimum 2.0 mil (0.05 mm) dry film thickness.
2. For galvanized surfaces, apply organic zinc repair paint complying with requirements
of ASTM A 780, modified to 95 percent zinc in dry film. Galvanizing repair paint
shall have 95 percent zinc by weight, ZiRP by Duncan Galvanizing. Thickness of
applied galvanizing repair paint shall be not less than coating thickness required by
ASTM A 123 or A 153 as applicable. Touch-up of galvanized surfaces with silver
paint, brite paint, or aluminum paints is not acceptable.
3. For factory-applied finish coatings, field-touch-up shall be performed by factory
approved personnel for warranties to apply. Touch-up shall be such that repair is not
visible from a distance of 6 feet. If non factory-approved technicians are used for

field touch-up, no warranties shall exist.
4. A touch-up repair kit or touchup instructions shall be provided to the Owner for
each type of factory-applied finish.

3.10 ADJUSTING AND CLEANING

A. Touch-Up Painting: Immediately after erection, clean field welds, bolted connections,
and abraded areas. Paint uncoated and abraded areas with same material as used for shop
painting to comply with SSPC-PA 1 for touching up shop-painted surfaces. Apply by
brush or spray to provide a minimum 2.0 mil (0.05 mm) dry film thickness.

B. Galvanized Surfaces: Clean field welds, bolted connections, and abraded areas and repair
galvanizing to comply with ASTM A 780.

3.11 PROTECTION

A. Protection of metal fabrications:


1. All metal fabrication surfaces of components vulnerable to damage during handling
and installation, or by subsequent site operations, are to be fully protected throughout
the course of the works;
2. Adequately protect all surfaces to the satisfaction of the Consultant until
Substantial Completion of the whole of the works.

B. Protective coatings: Shall be resistant to all weathers; removable from areas inaccessible
after installation and partially removable and replaceable for access to fixing points
during installation or subsequent site operations.

C. Protective Tapes: Any protective tapes used in direct contact with Metal Fabrication are to
be low tack, self-adhesive type and light in colour. Their use in application must be
approved by the powder coating manufacturer.

1.3 CLOSEOUT SUBMITTALS

A. General: Comply with the requirements of Section 017800 Closeout


Procedures, and submit the following.

1. Warranties.

2. Operation and Maintenance (O+M) Manuals: Include component list


with the manufacturer's reference numbers, descriptions of materials
and procedures for repairing and cleaning of finishes; and cleaning
frequency.

1.4 QUALITY ASSURANCE

A. Contractor's Qualifications: A specialist, who has at least 10 years'


successful experience in performing similar work, or operates a similar
quality system acceptable to the Engineer. Welders shall be certified.

B. Welding Qualifications: Qualify procedures and personnel according to the following.

1. American Welding Code (AWS) D1.1/ D1.1M, "Structural Welding Code - Steel."

2. American Welding Code (AWS) D1.2/ D1.2M, "Structural Welding Code -


Aluminum."

C. Provide mock-ups, prototypes, quality benchmark installations, testing and


inspections in accordance with Section 014000 Quality Requirements.

D. Mock-ups: Not required.

E. Prototypes: Not required.

F. Quality Benchmark Installation: An area determined by the Engineer of each


element of the work fully installed, completed and accepted by the Engineer.

G. Preconstruction Testing/ Reports

1. Provide independently certified test literature for each type of


accessory. The test result data shall meet the requirements of the
Specification.

2. Where test results for a material or product are not available,


undertake testing to show compliance with the Specification at an
independent testing laboratory acceptable to the Engineer.

3. The provision of testing data or the carrying-out of tests does not


relieve the Contractor of his responsibilities regarding the durability or
service life requirements.

H. Results and Certificates

1. Submit to the Engineer test certificates to confirm compatibility of


the sealant used with all substrate materials including aluminum,
finishes, glass, glass coatings, and gaskets, setting blocks and backing
rods. These certificates shall relate to tests carried out by the sealant
manufacturer.

2. Welding certificates.

3. Tests and inspection results shall be submitted immediately they are available.

4. Submit certificates relating to the materials used in the work as


confirmation of tests carried out in accordance with the relevant
Standards, and/ or other national standards as appropriate.

5. Maintain, until the end of the defects liability period, records of


all inspections and tests performed, material certification, inspection
and test plans, drawings, and any other documentation to substantiate
conformity with the Specification, including those carried out by
Subcontractors.

6. The records shall be stored in such a way that they are identifiable to
the component to which they refer and are retrievable.

7. The records shall be available for inspection by the Engineer and


copies of records shall be given to the Engineer upon request. At the
end of the defects liability period they shall be submitted to the
Engineer.

1.5 DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING

A. Delivery: Deliver materials to Site ready for use in largest sections


feasible. Identify deliveries in accordance with submittals. Protect
materials from damage during fabrication and delivery. Deliver materials
to Site as close to installation time as possible.
B. Storage: Store materials and component parts under cover in dry and clean
conditions, clear of the ground. Protect materials from damage or
marring of exposed surfaces and coatings. Retain protection for as long
as possible after installation.

C. Handling: Handle materials using methods and equipment without damage to


members or coatings.
Inspect components before installation. Replace damaged items o r w o r k

which cannot be satisfactorily re-finished on Site to the acceptance of the
Engineer.

D. Provide protective coatings or coverings to protect the work during shipment


and construction, without affecting finishes, imparting residue, affecting
adhesion of sealants, or causing deleterious effects in the work.

1.6 ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

A. General: Install materials and components in weather conditions recommended by the


manufacturer. Do not install any work on surfaces that are dirty, wet or
contaminated such that a proper bond, seating or fastening cannot be ensured.

B. Temperature: Make allowance for differences between design temperature


and temperatures on Site during installation when sizing construction and
movement joints.

PART 2 - P R O D U C T S

2.1 PRODUCT SELECTION


A. General
1. Do not use products that bear names, logos or references on visible surfaces.

2. Paints: Coordinate the use of primer, decorative and protective coats for
items requiring Site-applied paints with Section 09 91 00 Painting.

B Source of Supply

1. Obtain each product from a single manufacturer with at least 5 years'


experience of producing similar items.

2. Obtain auxiliary materials and components from, or under the direction


of, the principal products manufacturer.

3. Products visible in the finished work shall be obtained from a single


production run to ensure uniformity.

C. Interior Metal Balustrade

1. Description: Stainless steel balustrade with aluminum handrail for


interior elements including all necessary fastenings, bracketing and
accessories required to complete the installation.

D. Exterior Metal Balustrade

1. Description: Metal balustrade with metal handrail for exterior

elements including all necessary fastenings, bracketing and accessories
required to complete the installation.

2.2 DESIGN CRITERIA

A. The Co n tra cto r shall be responsible for all aspects of construction,


fabrication, detailing and installation in accordance with the Specification.
This shall include ensuring that all interfacing requirements relating to the
building structure and other systems are accommodated in accordance with
the Structural Engineer's details, and that interfaces with any external
envelope elements are fully weathertight.

B. Materials used for fastening shall be stainless steel grade 316. Fastenings
shall be concealed or inconspicuous to the acceptance of the Engineer.

C. Agree with the Engineer the period during which the sealant shall not change in
appearance or color.
Any discoloration of sealant during this time shall not be acceptable.

D. Sealant performance shall be verified by provision of current independent test


certificates.

2.3 PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS:

A. Specific Movements
1. The work shall be fabricated and installed to withstand all movements
of the building structure under all specified design loads or combination
of loads without damage or any reduction in the performance of the
work.

2. All fastenings shall be capable of providing adequate adjustment with


the minimal use of packing shims, which shall be agreed with the
Engineer.

3. All necessary movement joints shall be designed to accommodate the


maximum movements that can be derived from the specified and
determined design loads and movements. Under maximum
movements the joints shall meet the requirements of the Specification.

4. The work shall resist all specified static and dynamic design loads
likely to be encountered without causing permanent deformation of
components or the failure of members or seals and shall transmit such

loads safely to the points of support.

5. The work shall not deflect under loading in any way that is
detrimental to any elements of the work or adjacent structural or
building elements.

6. The work shall accommodate the following movements without any


permanent deformation or reduction in the specified performance.

a) Deflection under design loads.

b) The effects of internal/ external wind and pressure loadings.

c) Changes i n dimension and shape of components arising from


building movements, including settlement, creep, twisting and
racking.

d) Movement of any joint whether designed to permit movement or not.

e) Thermal movements.
B. Specific Dead Loads

1. The work shall be capable of accommodating the following dead loads


without any reduction in performance:

a) The work's own dead load shall be accommodated locally and


without causing deflections or movements, which adversely affect
the performance or appearance of the system components.

b) The dead loads derived from permanent fixtures or services


attached to the surfaces of the work.

C. Specific Live Loads

1. The work shall be capable of accommodating the following specified


live loads without any reduction in performance:

a) All loads resulting from movements of the building structure and


support structure.

b) A horizontal line load applied to the work, due to the occupants and
vehicles.
c) Impact loads, or transferred impact loads, that occur during the
service life of the work, without deterioration in performance and
without sustaining non-repairable damage.

d) Loads imposed during replacement.

D. Deflections

1. The maximum allowable deflection of any element of the work, when
carrying full design loads, shall not exceed 15mm or 1/ 175 of their
clear span in a direction normal to the plane of that element, whichever
is the lesser value.

2. The work shall not deflect under loading in any way that is
detrimental to any element of themselves or adjacent structural or
building elements.

3. All components, couplings and fastenings shall be capable of


accommodating all of the above deflection without permanent
distortion, deformation or failure.

4. The work shall accommodate differential structural movements arising


from any loads imposed by adjacent structures.

5. The magnitude of the allowable deflections shall be reduced if they are


detrimental to any part of the work, their support structure or internal
finishes.

E. Structural Integrity

1. Balustrades and handrails indicated on the Design Drawings and


described in the Specification shall be in accordance with ASTM E894
and ASTM E935, unless stated otherwise.

2. Construction of barriers shall be in accordance with ASTM E894


and ASTM E935, to the acceptance of the Structural Engineer.

F. Specific Fire Performance Requirements

1. Refer to the Fire Strategy Report and the NFPA.

G. Demountability
1. Elements of the work shall be individually and independently
removable ensuring access for maintenance and/ or replacement of
glazed and solid units in the event of breakage or damage.

2. The removal of units shall not affect the performance or safety of


adjacent or any other part of the work.

H. Thermal Movement: The work shall withstand expansion and contraction


forces, including differential rates of movement between different materials,
components and color finishes, resulting from temperature changes.

I. Durability

1. The work shall retain its original appearance and performance
throughout the life of the building without failure when maintained in
accordance with an agreed maintenance program. Failure shall be
defined as the occurrence of one or more of the following defects arising
from deficiencies in design, material selection or workmanship.

a) Collapse, damage or excessive deflection resulting from the application of


specified loads.

b) Distortion, displacement or other damage to a woven metal


fabric that renders it unserviceable or unattractive.

c) Atmospheric corrosion, stress corrosion, bi-metallic/ electro-


chemical corrosion or other premature deterioration of a material.

d) Degradation of protective coatings causing galvanized items to


suffer corrosion during their life and painted items to suffer coating
breakdown in the period up to first maintenance.

e) Component parts that may suffer damage under design safety


loading shall permit easy replacement with the minimum amount
of disturbance to the building users.

J. Impact and Abrasion Resistance

1. The extent of any damage determined through testing shall be recorded


and, where possible, quantified. Details shall be submitted to the Engineer.

2. Details of tests shall be provided to demonstrate the performance of


materials and finishes in resisting abrasion from pedestrian traffic
(hands, rings, luggage, cloth, shoes, etc.) and any other abrasion
resulting from adjacent traffic movements.

2.4 MATERIALS

A. Stainless Steel

1. Tubing: In accordance with ASTM A554, Grade MT 304/ Grade MT 316L.

2. Pipe: In accordance with ASTM A312/ A312M, Grade TP 304/ Grade TP 316L.

3. Castings: In accordance with ASTM A743/ A743M, Grade CF 8 or CF


20/ Grade CF 8M or CF 3M.

4. Plate and Sheet: In accordance with ASTM A240/ A240M or ASTM A666,
Type 304/ Type 316L.

5. Expanded Metal: In accordance with ASTM F1267, Type I
(expanded), Type II (expanded and flattened), Class 3 (corrosion-
resistant steel), made from stainless steel sheet, in accordance with
ASTM A240/ A240M or ASTM A666, Type 304/ Type 316.
6. Perforated Metal: Stainless steel sheet, in accordance with ASTM
A240/ A240M or ASTM A666, Type 304/ Type 316L.

7. Woven-Wire Mesh: Intermediate-crimp, woven-wire mesh, In


accordance with ASTM A580/ A580M, Type 304/ Type 316.

B. Fastenings/ Fasteners

1. Unless otherwise indicated, provide Type 304/ Type 316 stainless steel
fasteners for interior/ exterior use.

2. Un-galvanized-Steel Railings: Plated steel fasteners In accordance


with ASTM B633 or ASTM F1941M, Class Fe/ Zn 5 for zinc coating.

3. Hot-Dip Galvanized Railings: Type 304 stainless steel or hot-dip zinc-


coated steel fasteners in accordance with ASTM A153M or ASTM
F2329 for zinc coating.

4. Stainless Steel Railings: Type 304 stainless steel fasteners for interior
applications; Type 316 stainless steel fasteners for exterior applications.

5. Fasteners for Anchoring Railings to Other Construction: Select


fasteners of type, grade, and class required to produce connections
suitable for anchoring railings to other types of construction
indicated and capable of withstanding design loads.

6. Fasteners for Interconnecting Railing Components:

a) Provide concealed fasteners for interconnecting railing components


and for attaching them to other work, unless exposed fasteners are
unavoidable or are the standard fastening method for railings
indicated.

b) Provide Phillips or hex socket, as selected by the Engineer, flat-


head machine screws for exposed fasteners unless otherwise
indicated.

7. Post-Installed Anchors: Unless otherwise specified in


Structural specification provide torque-controlled expansion anchors
capable of sustaining, without failure, a load equal to 6 No. times the
load imposed when installed in unit masonry and 4 No. times the load

imposed when installed in concrete, as determined by testing
according to ASTM E488, conducted by a qualified independent
testing agency.

a) Material for Interior Locations: Carbon-steel components zinc-


plated in accordance with ASTM B633 or ASTM F1941M, Class Fe/
Zn 5, unless otherwise indicated.

b) Material for Exterior Locations and Where Stainless Steel is


Indicated: Alloy Group A4 stainless steel bolts, ASTM F738M,
and nuts, ASTM F836M.

8. Fastening components shall be in accordance with all statutory


requirements (and be to the acceptance of the Abu Dhabi City
Municipality and/ or Structural Engineer) both as to strength and type
and shall be designed to carry all dead, live and wind loading under due
consideration of any applicable thermal movements.

9. All necessary fastenings shall be installed for the work.

10. Visible fastenings shall match accepted samples.

11. Unless otherwise specified, the following basic requirements shall be


adhered to:

a) Rigidity: Only fastenings that are suited to the likely stresses,


movements and vibrations in use without allowing any wobble,
creaks or deflection of any fixtures or fittings shall be used.
b) Removability: Items that require accessibility or removal shall be fixed
With bolts.

C. Inserts: Stainless steel grade 1.4301 (304) or grade 1.4401 (316) of suitable
design and strength to suit application.

D. Shims: Horseshoe type made from stainless or suitably coated steel where
concealed. Use sleeve type spacers of stainless steel for visible shims.

E. Isolating Materials: Self-adhesive PVC tape, polyester powder coat or


two-pack epoxy paint as recommended by the manufacturer to suit
application.

F. Sealants: Refer to Section 07 92 00 Joint Sealants.

G. Gaskets
1. Gaskets shall be made of either Ethylene Propylene material (EPDM/ EP)
or of Silicone.

2. All visible glazing gaskets shall have factory-formed corners. All other
gaskets shall have overlapping joints with appropriate sealant in
between.

3. The gasket system shall comprise both extruded and molded elements.
These shall perform and appear as a single element.

4. All gaskets shall be fabricated to the most appropriate grade and


hardness. Design and select all gaskets in order to:

a) Be most appropriate to the extrusion design.

b) Ensure that they do not permanently distort over the working life of

the Work.

5. Provide written confirmation from the gasket manufacturer that the


gasket material and designs are wholly suitable for their specific use in
any part of the Work and are compatible with all other materials and
sealants used within the installation and at interfaces with other
materials/ components

6. The color of all gaskets shall be black unless specified otherwise.

7. Gaskets shall not shrink nor warp and shall not deteriorate between the

periods stated in the Contractor's stated times for replacement.

8. Gasket corners in frames shall be performed and factory vulcanized in ladders.

H. The choice of seals and gaskets shall not result in any reduction in sound
insulation performance.

2.5 FABRICATION

A. General

1. End caps shall be provided to exposed stop ends of metal handrails.

2. Systems shall include fastenings, bracketry, support framing and


all other components/ accessories necessary to complete the work
in accordance with the Specification and as indicated on the Design
Drawings.

3. Tubular handrails shall be fixed to sleeves in balustrades with concealed


fastenings. All handrails shall feature concealed internal sleeved joints.

4. Form work true to line and level with accurate angles and surfaces.

5. Fabricate connections that will be exposed to weather in a manner to
exclude water. Provide weep holes where water may accumulate.

6. Cut, reinforce, drill, and tap as indicated to receive finish hardware, screws,

and similar items.

7. Wall mounting brackets shall be minimum 10mm mild steel plates with
adjustable wall mounting angles, shaped to match the diameter of the
handrail and to profiles indicated on the Design Drawings.

8. Wall mounting brackets shall be two part, with the connection plate
fixed to either structural concrete walls, or concealed mild steel
members with suitable countersunk fastenings prior to commencement
of plasterboard dry lining.

9. The handrail corners shall be radiuses or mitered, as indicated on the

Design Drawings.

10. Balustrade infills shall be to profiles positioned horizontally at centers


indicated on the Design Drawings, and in accordance with Municipality
requirements. Where necessary, rods shall be factory bent to suit
balustrade layout.

11. Fastenings shall be stainless steel of suitable grade.

12. Finish to stainless steel balustrades/ handrails shall be brushed/


satin and accepted via sampling.

13. Fabricate rails in the longest practicable lengths, with smooth bends and
welded joints, complete with sleeves, spigots, brackets and other
attachments.

14. For removable railing posts, fabricate slip-fit sockets from steel/
stainless steel tube or pipe whose internal diameter is sized for a close
fit with posts; limit movement of post without lateral load, measured at
top, to not more than one-fortieth of post height. Provide socket covers
designed and fabricated to resist being dislodged.

15. Expanded-Metal Infill Panels: Fabricate infill panels from expanded


metal made from same metal as railings in which they are installed,
unless otherwise indicated.

16. Perforated-Metal Infill Panels: Fabricate infill panels from perforated


metal made from same metal as railings in which they are installed,
unless otherwise indicated.

17. Woven-Wire Mesh Infill Panels: Fabricate infill panels from woven-wire
mesh crimped into metal channel frames. Make wire mesh and frames
from same metal as railings in which they are installed, unless otherwise
indicated.

18. Toe Boards: Fabricate to dimensions and details indicated.

19. Metals used in exposed work shall have smooth surfaces, free of
blemishes including pitting, seam marks, roller marks, waves, striations,
tool and die marks. Profiles shall be true to angle or curvature as
required with sharp edges and corners.

20. Fabricate metal items free of stress corrosion or cracking.

21. Carefully fit and match components and pre assemble the work as far as possible
in the shop. Do not weld joints designed to be bolt fixed. Provide hairline joints on
contact surfaces.

22. Select materials and methods of fabrication to achieve accuracy and fit.

23. Fabricate members and components straight, free of distortion and to the specified
tolerances. Heat-treat components to relieve residual stresses.

24. Visible surfaces to be true to line and level, free from imperfection, with
sharp angles and straight corners.

25. Provide rebates, lugs and brackets required to assemble and install the work.

26. Incorporate dowels and spigots into joints to accurately align components.

27. Drill and tap components to allow their rigid assembly and
attachment to other work with concealed fasteners, unless otherwise
accepted. Where visible fasteners are permitted set out in an orderly
pattern using countersunk head type. Miter visible corners, unless
otherwise indicated.

28. Isolate dissimilar materials to prevent galvanic action.

29. Clearly mark items for proper assembly and installation, using
methods that will not mar protective finishes.

30. Paint finished components shall have fully welded connections, unless
otherwise accepted, to protect unprotected joint faces from corrosion.

B. Cutting

1. Saw-cut or shear metal edges square and sharp without causing


distortion or discoloration to surfaces. Do not use flame-cutting

equipment.

2. Grind cut edges to remove burrs, saw marks and blemishes from
exposed edges, or alternatively by welding and grinding.

3. Dress meeting faces of joints to produce a proper fit. Grind Site


splices smooth, flush and square.

4. Machine drill or mill holes and similar cut-outs.

C. Bending: Bend sheet metal to the required shape. Bent items shall be free
of grain separation, oil canning or other distortion. Back-cut sheets to attain
maximum square bend possible.

1. Bend members in jigs to produce uniform curvature for each


configuration required; maintain cross section of member throughout
entire bend without buckling, twisting, cracking, or otherwise deforming
exposed surfaces of components.

D. Welding/ Brazing General

1. Thoroughly clean surfaces to be joined.

2. Weld or mechanically fix joints in accordance with the design and performance
requirements. Allow for dismantling, for handling and delivery.

3. Weld in accordance with the relevant standards to produce connections


as strong and rigid as adjacent sections.

4. Weld joints continuously along entire line of contact to produce a


regular and even contour, free from undercutting, porosity,
discontinuities or other defects.

5. Grind exposed welds flush and smooth without fillets to maintain the line of the
welded members.

6. All visible cut ends shall be polished smooth with no crude machine cut visible.

7. Welds on mechanical finished surfaces to match and blend with


adjoining surfaces and be imperceptible.

8. Make joints with parent and filler metal fully bonded throughout with no
inclusions, holes, porosity or cracks.

9. Prevent weld spatter falling on surfaces of materials that will be


self-finished and visible in completed work.

10. Remove all traces of flux residue, slag and weld spatter.

11. Finishing Welded/ Brazed Joints: Visible butt joints in completed work

shall be smooth and flush with adjacent surfaces.

E. Visible fillet joints in completed work shall be executed neatly. Grind smooth where
specified.

F. External visible lines and depressions caused by the internal welding of


hollow section steelwork shall be positioned in the work so as to be non-
visible.

G. Stainless Steel

1. Unless otherwise specified, welds to visible areas of stainless steel


shall be ground smooth to achieve a seamless surface. Heat tints shall
be removed using light abrasives, pickling paste, wire brushing or
similar to achieve continuity with the specified finish. Areas difficult to
access shall be manually finished if necessary.

2. All welds shall be in accordance with AWS D1.1/ D1.1M,


"Structural Welding Code - Steel".
Distortion due to thermal movement shall be minimized using jigs
or other methods as appropriate during welding. Welding methods and
consumables shall be chosen as most appropriate to the type, thickness,
shape and location of joints to meet the performance levels required and
have mechanical properties at least equal to the original base metal. In
addition, consumables shall have an equal or superior corrosion
resistance to the base metal being welded. All welding
recommendations required to meet other relevant standards as
specified shall also apply. Electrodes for manual metal arc welding shall
be in accordance with AWS requirements.

3. Stress corrosion or cracking shall not occur and all necessary


precautions in the fabrication and installation of stainless steel elements/
materials shall be undertaken, avoiding the simultaneous presence of any
of the following:

a) Tensile stresses.

b) Residual stresses after cold working or welding.

c) Aggressive local environmental conditions.


d) Metal temperatures that in conjunction with the above may induce
stress corrosion cracking.

4. Thermal Cutting of Stainless Steel: After cutting, grind off

material that is liable to corrode.

I. Stainless Steel Castings


1. Shall be fabricated using the lost wax process or such other process as may be
proposed by the
Contractor and accepted by the Engineer.

2. The surface finish of the castings shall be determined by the


submission of samples for review and acceptance by the Engineer.
Samples once accepted should be the standard required for all
subsequent castings to be used in the work.

J. Fabrication Tolerances: Non-cumulative

1. Deviations in panel length, width and diagonal dimension tolerances shall not
exceed ±1mm.

2. Straightness: L/ 1000 or 2mm, whichever is the lesser.

3. Squareness of Cut Profiles: Depth of profile/ 1000.

4. Squareness of Fabricated Items: Maximum 2mm difference between diagonals.

5. Flatness of Fabricated Items: Maximum 2mm difference between one corner and
another.

6. Plumbness: ±2 to 1mm/ m.

7. Level: ±1mm/ m.

8. The twist and warping shall not cause any point of the panel to be more than
0.5mm out of plane. The twist and warping shall not cause any point of the
structural frame to be more than 2mm out of plane.

2.6 FINISHES

A. General
1. Carry out welding, cutting and machining before applying protective coating and
finishes.

2. Prime visible surfaces of nonferrous metals. Prime all surfaces,


including joint faces, of ferrous metal fabrications. Do not paint
surfaces within 50mm of Site welds; prepare and finish after connections
are completed.

3. Apply finishes to visible surfaces of non-ferrous and ferrous metals in


accordance with the paint manufacturer's instructions.

4. Prime paint items to receive Site-applied paint in accordance with

Section 099100 Painting.

B. Site-Applied Paint: In accordance with Section 099100 Painting.

C. Steel and Iron Finishes

1. Galvanized Railings:

a) In accordance with ASTM A123/ A123M for hot-dip galvanized railings.

b) In accordance with ASTM A153/ A153M for hot-dip galvanized hardware.

D. Stainless Steel Finishes


1. 180-Grit Polished Finish: Oil-ground, uniform, directionally textured
finish unless otherwise specified by the Engineer.

2. 320-Grit Polished Finish: Oil-ground, uniform, fine, directionally


textured finish unless otherwise specified by the Engineer.

3. Polished and Buffed Finish: Oil-ground, 180-grit finish followed by


buffing finish unless otherwise specified by the Engineer.

4. When polishing is completed, passivate and rinse surfaces. Remove


embedded foreign matter and leave surfaces chemically clean.

PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.1 EXAMINATION

A. Verification of Conditions: Prior to commencing installation, examine the


areas and the conditions in which the work will be installed. Verify
dimensions and alignments, and surfaces to receive the work of this Section.
Notify the Engineer of unsatisfactory conditions.

3.2 PREPARATION

A. Fastening to Adjacent Construction

1. Coordinate the delivery and accurate placing of inserts, anchors and


brackets for building into or for attachment to adjacent construction with
minimal delay.

2. Provide templates or setting out drawings for forming and locating holes.

3. Do not cut, drill or otherwise modify the work of others without the

acceptance of the Engineer. B. Separate materials identified as
reactive in PD 6484 to prevent electro-chemical corrosion.

3.3 INSTALLATION
A. General
1. Install work accurately in location, alignment and elevation; plumb,
level, true and free of rack.

2. Acceptance shall be received from the Engineer before drilling or


cutting parts of the structure, other than where indicted on the Shop
Drawings.

3. Cut and abrade items only with the consent of the fabricator. Do
modifications and refinishing of items at the shop, unless otherwise
accepted by the Engineer.

4. The work shall be square, regular to line, level and plane, with all
junctions fitting to the stated tolerances.

5. Do not install items that are warped, bowed, deformed or otherwise


damaged or defaced to such extent as to impair strength or appearance.

6. Isolating tape, plastic washers, or other suitable means to prevent bi-


metallic corrosion shall be provided between dissimilar metals, or
between preservation treated wood and metal.

7. Perform cutting, drilling, and fitting required for installing railings.


Set railings accurately in location, alignment, and elevation; measured
from established lines and levels and free of rack.

a) Do not weld, cut, or abrade surfaces of railing components that


have been coated or finished after fabrication and that are intended
for field connection by mechanical or other means without further
cutting or fitting.

b) Align rails so variations from level for horizontal members and


variations from parallel with rake of steps and ramps for sloping
members do not exceed 5mm in 3m.

c) Corrosion Protection: Coat concealed surfaces of aluminum that


will be in contact with grout, concrete, masonry, wood, or
dissimilar metals, with a heavy coat of bituminous paint.

8. Fastening to In-Place Construction: Use anchorage devices and

fasteners where necessary for securing railings and for properly
transferring loads to in-place construction.

B. Assembly and Fitting

1. Assemble and fit the work.

2. Securely anchor work to supporting structure. Use expansion bolts for


concrete and masonry, machine screws or bolts for metal, and screws
for wood.

3. Attach handrail brackets to walls with screws. Exposed cast-in


inserts in fair-faced concrete surfaces are not permitted.

4. Do not exceed the limitations imposed on the spacing and edge


distances of expansion anchors by the manufacturer nor exceed accepted
shimming thicknesses.

5. Bolt connections tight, with threads entirely concealed; cut off


exposed threads flush with adjoining surface. Make allowance for re-
torque of stainless steel bolts following the relaxation in stress
experienced by such fastenings.
6. Set fasteners with heads parallel to the surface; set countersunk heads flush.

7. Grind -joints smooth and make good finishes as necessary. Secure


exposed connections accurately together with tight hairline joints.

8. Use only shop-drilled holes for the assembly of the work. Site drilling
for fasteners shall not be permitted unless otherwise accepted by the
Engineer. Locate as instructed.

9. Welding:

a) Weld connections only when permitted; do not weld galvanized


materials or connections intended for bolting.

b) Weld only those items that can be ground and finished to match
the appearance of the adjacent surfaces.

c) Weld continuously along joints without causing distortion,


discoloration or other imperfections in the finished work.

d) Grind welds smooth and imperceptible in the finished work.

10. Anchoring Posts:

a) Use metal sleeves preset and anchored into concrete for installing
posts. After posts have been inserted into sleeves, fill annular space

between post and sleeve with non-shrink, nonmetallic grout or
anchoring cement, mixed and placed in accordance with anchoring
material manufacturer's written instructions.

b) Anchor posts to metal surfaces with oval flanges, angle type, or


floor type as required by conditions, connected to posts and to
metal supporting members as follows:

1. For aluminum pipe railings, attach posts using fittings designed


and engineered for this purpose.

2. For stainless steel pipe railings, weld flanges to post and bolt to
supporting surfaces.

3. For steel pipe railings, weld flanges to post and bolt to metal supporting
surfaces.
c) Install removable railing sections, where indicated, in slip-fit metal
sockets cast in concrete.

C. Tension mesh infill panels to remain within the specified deflection limits without
causing distortion in the weave.

D. Fastening Directly to Structure

1. Provide and install all fastening devices, including framing,


bearing brackets, movement fastenings, etc. and carry out all necessary
preparation work such as drilling, plugging, screwing, bolting, cutting
for anchor bolts or sockets to be cast in, making good, including
grouting-in of anchor bolts, and fastening whatsoever necessary.

2. All fastenings shall be to the slab edge face condition, to be


coordinated with the superstructure design.

E. Installation Tolerances

1. The work shall be erected in proper alignment in relation to established


lines and grids indicated on the Design Drawings.

2. Joints: The width of any joint shall not deviate from the nominal width
by more than ±1mm. Any variation shall be equally distributed with no
sudden changes. The work shall be erected such that no joint is more
than 1.5mm from a vertical plane. The cumulative slope between the
same locations on any vertical plane shall not exceed 1 in 1000. The
vertical plane of the work shall be within ±1.5mm of the theoretical
position.

3. Alignment: Adjacent elements of balustrades shall not deviate
from either their intended horizontal or vertical alignment by more
than ±2mm.

4. Level of horizontal/ raking members: ±1mm from datum in 1500mm non-


cumulative.

5. Plumb of vertical members: ±1mm to the vertical in any 1500mm, non-cumulative.

6. Squareness: Any diagonal length across the panel shall not deviate by more than
the lesser of ±3mm or ±0.075% of design dimension.

7. Bow: The centre section of the element shall not bow by more than the lesser of
3mm or 0.075% of the length of the element measured from a straight line between
the ends of the element.

8. Straightness: Any surface of edge shall not deviate by more than ±2mm
from a 2m straightedge placed against it in a direction parallel to the
long axis of the element.

9. Flatness: Any surface shall not deviate by more than ±2mm from a
2m straightedge placed against it in any direction.

10. Twist: No section of the element may be twisted by more than 1° from
the section at either end of the element.

11. Tolerances shall not be cumulative.

12. At the time of completion, the visual requirements of the work are such
that, within any planning grid area, the allowable tolerances are to be
equally distributed to ensure that:

a) The balustrades are vertical.

b) The vertical joints are of equal size and at equal centres.

c) The support mullions are vertical and at even centres.

d) The work's supports have straight lines and flat planes.


e) The horizontal joints are of equal size and in line between adjacent panels.
f) The gap between the panels and structure posts is constant.
F. Metalwork

1. All inaccessible steel shall be properly protected against corrosion for the design
life of the Work.

2. Adequate measures shall be taken to prevent bimetallic corrosion


between dissimilar metals and to isolate aluminum components from

cementitious surfaces.

3. No welds other than those indicated on the Shop Drawings, even for
temporary attachments or repairs, shall be acceptable unless agreed in
advance by the Engineer.

4. Vent holes in hollow sections shall be sealed in a manner that shall


prevent the ingress of moisture. The proposed method of achieving
this requirement shall be submitted for review by the Engineer.

G. Railing Connections

1. Nonwelded Connections: Use mechanical or adhesive joints for


permanently connecting railing components. Seal recessed holes of
exposed locking screws using plastic cement filler colored to match
finish of railings.

2. Welded Connections: Use fully welded joints for permanently connecting


railing components. Expansion Joints: Install expansion joints at locations
indicated but not farther apart than required to accommodate thermal
movement. Provide slip-joint internal sleeve extending 50mm beyond joint on
either side, fasten internal sleeve securely to one side, and locate joint within
150mm from Post.

H. Attaching Railings

1. Anchor railing ends at walls with round flanges anchored to wall


construction and welded to railing ends or connected to railing ends
using non-welded connections.

2. Anchor railing ends to metal surfaces with flanges bolted to metal


surfaces and welded to railing ends or connected to railing ends using
non-welded connections.

3. Attach railings to wall with wall brackets, except where end flanges are
used. Provide brackets with suitable clearance from inside face of
handrail and finished wall surface. Locate brackets as indicated or, if
not indicated, at spacing required to support structural loads.

3.4 SITE QUALITY CONTROL

A. Site Tests and Inspections: Perform the specified tests and inspections using
a suitably experienced quality manager.

B. Manufacturer's Site Service: Arrange for a technical representative from the

manufacturer to do Site visits for one full day at the start of the installation,
and once/ twice weekly as the work progresses. Technical representative to
provide surveillance of the materials installation, and monitor and report
installation procedures and unacceptable conditions.

C. Testing of Fastenings: As the work proceeds, allow for the bolts to be


proof load tested as required and witnessed by the Structural Engineer.

3.5 CLEANING AND ADJUSTING

A. Cleaning
1. Remove debris and unused materials from Site upon completion and
dispose of safely. Clean exposed surfaces using methods recommended
by the material manufacturers, and without scratching surfaces. Do not
use abrasive cleaners or materials that will damage adjacent work.

2. If stainless steel has not been protected by adhesive film, thoroughly


clean prior to presentation to the Engineer for acceptance.

B. Adjusting

1. Adjust operating parts to provide smooth unbinding operation. Make


good adjacent surfaces marred during installation, to the acceptance of
the Engineer. Repair or replace damaged or defective items to
acceptance of the Engineer.

2. Minor scratches and blemishes to finishes shall be repaired using the


coating manufacturer's recommended products and system, matching
original finish for color, texture and gloss. Repair coatings shall be
visually acceptable to the Engineer. Confirmation shall be provided that
the repair to the damaged finish complies in all respects to the
requirements of the Specification. Guarantee in writing that the damaged
or defective coating is satisfactory for the proposed remedial paint
system. Employ an independent finishing consultant to carry out an
inspection and any necessary tests and supply a full report to the
Engineer.

C. Touchup Painting: Immediately after erection, clean field welds, bolted


connections, and abraded areas of shop paint, and paint exposed areas with
the same material as used for shop painting in accordance with SSPC-PA 1
for touching up shop-painted surfaces.

D. Galvanized Surfaces: Clean field welds, bolted connections, and
abraded areas and repair galvanizing in accordance with ASTM A780.

3.6 PROTECTION

A. Protect exposed surfaces during and after installation, with boards, coverings,
low tack tapes and film. Remove and replace protection as instructed, for
inspection; remove immediately before Taking-Over.

1.5 QUALITY ASSURANCE


A. Manufacturers: Firms regularly engaged in the manufacture of (Safety Grating) (Slip Resistant
Grating) of the types required, whose products have been in satisfactory use in similar service for not
less than 5 years.
B. OSHA Compliance: All grating installations must comply with OSHA Standards for walking-working
surfaces.
C. Federal Specification RR-G-1602D (or current revision) defines the criteria for items to be considered
“Safety Grating”. Slip resistant performance data must be available to support compliance.
D. Manufacturer must have an ISO registered quality system in place, and Manual available upon
request.

1.6 DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING


A. Deliver (Safety Grating) (Slip Resistant Grating) and components carefully to avoid damage, denting
and scoring of finishes. Do not install damaged material.
B. Store materials in original packaging and in clean, dry space; protect from weather and construction
traffic. Materials to be elevated off of ground by blocks or skids or pallets.

PART 2 PRODUCTS

2.3 GRATINGS AND COMPONENTS
A. Safety Grating: planks shall meet or exceed the Federal Standard for Safety Grating, RR-G-1602D.
B. Slip Resistant Grating: planks shall be constructed from a single sheet with integrally formed side
channels and surface textures.

PART 3 EXECUTION

3.1 INSTALLATION
A. Inspect areas to receive Grating for obstacles. Notify the Engineer of conditions that would adversely
affect the installation or subsequent utilization of the areas. Do not proceed with installation until
unsatisfactory conditions are corrected.
B. Install Grating according to manufacturer’s recommendations and as shown on the construction
drawings.
C. Position Grating sections flat and square with ends bearing minimum 38mm on supporting structure
D. Keep sections at least 7mm away from vertical steel sections and 15mm from concrete walls
E. Allow clearance at joints between sections of maximum 7mm at side channels and maximum 10mm
at ends.
F. Band random cut ends and diagonal or circular cut exposed edges with a minimum 3mm thick bar
welded at contact points.
G. Join abutting walkway sections with manufacturer supplied splice plates
Bolted or welded as specified.
