THE LANGUAGE OF THE INTERNET
[P1] The importance of English as a global language is growing all the time. Of
course, there are more native speakers of Chinese than of English - about a
billion compared to about 400 million. But almost one and a quarter billion people
across the world use English as a second or foreign language. And this number
is getting bigger every year. English is the international language of politics,
business, science, transport, advertising, the media and computers. For example,
about 70 % of websites are in English, even in countries like Germany. Almost
90 % of research scientists use English as their working language every day.
[P2] There are some other languages, which are becoming widely used: the
number of Arabic, Chinese or Portuguese speaking people in different countries
is escalating too. Some languages like Urdu or Hindi are growing much faster
 than English. It is strange, but in the USA, the fastest growing language is
Spanish!

in the world, but sadly the future of many of them is not clear. In fact about
twenty languages are dying every year. And unfortunately, in the end, the culture
of these languages disappears with them. The traditions, songs, local foods and
many other important traditional things of these languages will vanish in
history. Only the researchers will know these on papers, but in their own

Ben Gets Dream Job

Things changed for Ben Southall when the Australian state of Queensland
advertised a job for someone to look after Hamilton Island and introduce it to
the world. They knew it sounded like the best job in the world, but they were
surprised when over 35.000 people applied for the job. Then they had to make
a difficult decision – which person to choose from so many candidates? After a
lot of testing and interviewing they announced Ben Southall as the winner. Ben
now works for the Queensland Tourist Board and promotes tourism there.
Because of the unique nature of the job, the Tourist Board wanted a unique
person with a range of skills and qualities. It was a long interview process,
involving a variety of tasks to find out about each candidate.
Fitness was very important, swimming ability was particularly essential. Ben can
swim very well and he also likes running, climbing, scuba diving and mountain
biking. It is clear that, physically, he can do almost anything. The ability to
communicate was important, too. For the last part of the interview, the final
sixteen candidates did various tests and tasks, including talking to TV and radio
reporters. The interviewers were interested in how the candidates performed in
the tasks, how they handled the press attention and their ability to write about
their adventures in a daily blog. The candidates did their best to impress the
interviewers.
Before he went, Ben was confident about his abilities to handle the challenge.
He couldn’t do everything they asked him in the interview, as he can’t speak
any other languages, but he felt that his other skills and his personality were
impressive. At the end of the interview, he was able to convince the interviewers
that he was the best person for the job. Even so, he says he was amazed when

Born in 1905 in Paris, Jean-Paul Sartre was a French existentialist philosopher, as

well as a playwright, novelist, critic and screenwriter. Sartre was awarded the Nobel
Prize in Literature in 1964, but he refused it, because for him this would mean being
turned into an institution. Sartre studied philosophy and he was a Marxist. Between
1929 and 1931, he served in the French Army. In 1929 Sartre became friends with
Simone de Beauvoir, who later became a noted philosopher and feminist. The two
friends became lifelong companions. Sartre joined the army in 1939 again, and he
was captured by German troops in 1940. He was kept as a prisoner of war in a camp
for nine months, then he was released in 1941. Sartre started teaching at a school
again, and he made friends with other thinkers and writers including Merleau-Ponty,
Jean-Toussaint, Jean Kanapa and Dominique Desanti. He wrote a book in 1943 called
‘L’Être et le Néant’ in which he explained that if a person tries too hard to conform to
the rules of society (or their country), this means they do not really make their own
decisions. Later in his life, Sartre started a newspaper in which they published articles
about politics, literature and art. He also wrote a series of novels and a philosophy book
that explains existentialism. In his novel ‘La Nausée’ in 1938, Sartre explained the way
of thinking of existentialism. Existentialism is a way of understanding the concept of
freedom. Through 1950s and 1960s, Sartre was in politics. He expressed that France
should stop its military existence in Algeria. He also had negative views about the war in
Vietnam. During this period, Sartre wrote another book called the ‘Critique de la Raison
Dialectique’ (Critique of Dialectical Reason). The arguments between him and Louis
Althusser about communism became famous in France. In 1980 Sartre died in Paris,
and he was buried there.
