Case Study: Enhancing Digital Learning Adoption in a University
In recent years, universities worldwide have increasingly adopted digital learning platforms to improve
teaching and learning experiences. Technologies such as Learning Management Systems (LMS), virtual
classrooms, and mobile learning applications are transforming how students access educational content.
Digital learning enables flexibility, accessibility, and personalized learning experiences. However, despite
these benefits, student engagement and adoption levels vary significantly across institutions.
Brighton State University, a large public institution with over 25,000 students and 2,000 staff members,
has recently introduced a new digital learning platform called EduFlex. The platform allows students to
access lecture materials, submit assignments, participate in online discussions, and attend virtual classes.
Although the university invested heavily in the platform’s development and infrastructure, usage statistics
reveal that many students are not fully utilizing its features. Some students log in only to download
lecture notes, while others avoid the platform altogether. The university’s Academic Innovation Unit has
identified several potential challenges, including limited student awareness of platform features,
inadequate digital skills, and inconsistent internet access.
Additionally, the university believes that institutional support such as training workshops, technical
assistance, and availability of digital resources may play a crucial role in influencing student engagement.
Some faculties actively encourage platform use, while others rely more on traditional teaching methods.
To better understand this issue, the Academic Innovation Unit has decided to conduct a research study.
The central research problem is:
“To what extent does student digital literacy influence their adoption of digital learning platforms at
Brighton State University?”
The researchers propose that digital literacy may influence student adoption of digital learning platforms.
They also believe that institutional support may either strengthen or weaken this relationship.
The study will use a quantitative research approach with a cross-sectional survey design. Data will be
collected from undergraduate students across all faculties. A sample of 450 students will be selected using
stratified random sampling to ensure fair representation. A pilot study will be conducted to test the
reliability and validity of the questionnaire. Data analysis will involve correlation, regression, and
moderation analysis. The findings will help the university improve digital learning strategies, enhance
student engagement, and ensure effective integration of technology into teaching.
Required Questions
1. Identify the variables in the study and develop a conceptual framework diagram showing the
relationships among the variables.
2. State two research questions that the Academic Innovation Unit aims to achieve through the study.
3. Demonstrate how to use Boolean logic operators to search for literature that intersects key concepts in
the study.
4. Identify which method the research unit may use in data collection and justify your answer.
5. If the total student population is 25,000 and the sample size is 450, calculate the sampling fraction.
6. Identify and explain two possible sampling errors that may occur in this study.
7. Write a suggestive abstract for the study.
