Tutorial 3

The document is a tutorial for Signal Processing I at Amrita School of Engineering, focusing on the analysis of Linear Time-Invariant (LTI) systems. It includes problems related to determining system outputs based on given impulse responses and inputs, as well as evaluating the characteristics of various impulse responses. Additionally, the document discusses the interconnection of LTI systems and requires justification for the memoryless, causal, and stable properties of specific systems.

Tutorial-3 (05/04/24)

1. Determine the output of the given LTI systems characterized by h[n] to the
given inputs.

(a) h[n] = δ[n] + 3δ[n − 1], x[n] = δ[n] − δ[n + 1] + δ[n − 1]

(b) h[n] = u[n], x[n] = u[n] − u[n − 3]
(c) h[n] = δ[n], x[n] = u[n]
(d) h[n] = u[n] − u[n − 2], x[n] = u[n] − u[n − 3]
(e) h[n] = u[n], x[n] = u[n]
(f) y[n] = u[n] ∗ u[n − 3]
(g) y[n] = (−1)n ∗ 2n u[−n + 2]

2. An LTI system has the impulse response h(t) as depicted in Figure 1.

Figure 1: Impulse response

Use linearity and time invariance to determine the system output y(t) if the
input is

(a) x(t) = 2δ(t + 2) + δ(t − 2)

(−1)p δ(t − 2p)
P
(b) x(t) =
p=0

3. Determine the output of the given LTI systems characterized by h(t) to the
given inputs.

(a) h(t) = e−t u(t); x(t) = u(t) − u(t − 2)

(b) h(t) = u(t); x(t) = e−t u(t)
(c) h(t) = u(t) − u(t − 2); x(t) = u(t − 1) − u(t − 4)
(d) h(t) = e−t u(t); x(t) = δ(t + 1) − δ(t) + 2δ(t − 2)

4. Interconnection of LTI systems: An interconnection of LTI systems is shown in
Figure 2. The impulse responses are h1 [n] = (1/2)n u[n + 2], h2 [n] = δ[n] and
h3 [n] = u[n − 1]. Let the overall impulse response of the system relating y[n] to
x[n] be represented as h[n].

Figure 2: Interconnection of LTI systems

(a) Express h[n] in terms of h1 [n], h2 [n] and h3 [n].

(b) Evaluate h[n].

5. For each of the following impulse responses, determine whether the correspond-
ing system is (i) memoryless (ii) causal, and (iii) stable. Justify your answers.

(a) h(t) = u(t) − 2u(t − 2)

(b) h(t) = eat u(t)
(c) h[n] = 2n u[−n]
(d) h[n] = (1/2)n u[n]
(e) h[n] = cos(πt)u(t)
