Detailed description
We are Digital Technology team, which supports the Global Banking and Markets division.
More traditionally, this is known as "investment banking". You can find out more about the
wider GBM organization here: [Link]
We are uniquely placed to drive HSBC’s digital agenda and have a track record for delivering
innovative software in new and creative ways. We see ourselves as being a technology
company within the bank, building great solutions to support the bank's wider strategy, and
we've been at the forefront of driving the organization’s DevOps / Agile agenda. We pride
ourselves in our speed of delivery, but also our resilience, and it's not unusual to start a
piece of work and have it in production in the same day.
We are currently focusing on these high-level outcomes:
- Iterating on our already successful on-premise digital platform to allow teams to
build products efficiently for our customers. The platform is being opened to
additional teams and business lines to host their products.
- Building out the flagship Single Dealer Platform for MSS, HSBC Evolve. There is always
a lot of work going on in this space, driven by client demand. We value the
importance of web standards, and focus on accessibility as well as speed of delivery
- Working with all our Sales teams globally to build products which make their lives
easier, and allow them to provide excellent customer service.
- Delivering the technology that supports the creation and delivery of research content
to our customers.
- Building next generation AI / ML tools to allow sales and traders to discover new
client insights.
- Building HSBC-wide social tools to allow internal communities to flourish - these have
had over 250k unique users internally since their creation 3 years ago.
Whilst our role profiles look to fill specific vacancies, we value mobility and encourage
rotation, so it is more than likely that if you spend a period of time with us, you'll get an
opportunity to work in different areas in our department.
PUBLIC
We strive to own and develop all aspects of software delivery and hosting, ranging from our
successful hosting platform to security vulnerability management and state of the art
production monitoring. We also collaborate with other areas of the bank and are always
willing to share best practice. Many of the tools we engineer have been adopted across the
bank.
What to expect if you are working in one of our teams?
Our department is currently c.350 people strong, based across 7 locations. Hong Kong,
China, India, Poland, UK, USA and Canada. Most of our teams are co-located but some of our
teams work across geographies. We love flexible working and self-organising teams and are
enjoying new means of collaboration as part of HSBC's hybrid working strategy.
A team is made up of between 4 to 6 people, working very closely with a business product
owner. You can expect the usual daily stand-ups, but we don't do sprints. We believe in
flow; small, low risk, non-breaking, frequent changes that are flowing to production all the
time. As a team we will get through hundreds of changes a day, and in 2021 the team
delivered 32k changes to production. We've set ourselves an even higher target for 2022!
Our customers are important to us. There is no point building a product if customers can't
use it. As a result, we treat our production environment for customers with the highest of
priorities. If you build it, you support it.
We value specialism but we also expect our team members to do whatever it takes to get
the job done. That might mean doing the analysis for a story, or working on changing a front-
end component even if you are a specialist server-side developer. Whilst this may put you
outside of your comfort zone , we have found that this is a great opportunity to learn - there
are plenty of people to help and you will always find someone that is willing to pair with
you. You're never on your own!
