Tutorial 2 2024

The document contains a tutorial for MTH 201 for the 2024-2025 academic year, focusing on various problems related to subspaces in Rn and R[x], linear independence, and vector spaces. It includes exercises on determining subspaces, proving properties of vector spaces, and finding bases for specific vector spaces. Additionally, it covers linear independence in complex vector spaces and the relationship between functions and matrices.

MTH 201 2024-2025 (1)

Tutorial 2
13/08/2024

1. Determine which of the following subsets of Rn are subspaces of Rn :

(a) W = {(x1 , . . . , xn ) ∈ Rn : xn = 0}
(b) {x ∈ Rn : x1 + xn = 2x3 }, where xi denotes the i-th coordinate of x ∈ Rn
and n ≥ 4.
(c) W = {x ∈ Rn : x1 + · · · + xn = 1}.
(d) W = {x ∈ Rn : x1 + · · · + xn ≥ 0}.
(e) W = {x ∈ Rn : xi+1 − xi = 1, i = 1, 2, . . . , n − 1}.
(f) W = {x ∈ Rn : x1 + · · · + xn = 0}.

2. Which of the following subsets of R[x] are subspaces?

(a) {p(x) ∈ R[x] : p(x) = p(1 − x)}.

(b) {p(x) ∈ R[x] : p(x) ≥ 1}.
(c) {p(x) ∈ R[x] : p(x) = x2 p(2) (x) + 4p(x) = 0}, where p(2) (x) denotes the
second order derivative of p(x).

3. Prove that R is not a finite dimensional vector space over Q. What is the dimen-
sion of R over Q? Is it countable?

4. Prove that each m×n matrix A is row equivalent to one and only one row reduced
echelon matrix.

5. Let V = {p(x) ∈ R[x] : deg p(x) ≤ 2n}. Compute the dimension of V0 , where
V0 := {p(x) ∈ V : p(x) only has even degree terms and p(1) + p(−1) = 0}.

6. Find three vectors u, v, w of R4 such that the set {u, v, w} is linearly dependent
whereas each set {u, v}, {v, w} and {u, w} is linearly independent. Extend each
linearly independent set to a basis of R4 .

7. Show that the vectors (1 + i, 2i) and (1, 1 + i) in C2 are linearly independent over
R. Are they linearly independent over C as well ?

8. Let V be a vector space over C of all functions from R to C. Let f1 (x) = 1, f2 (x) =
eix and f2 (x) = e−ix .

(a) Prove that f1 , f2 , f3 are linearly independent (over C).

1
(b) Let g1 = 1,Pg2 = sin x and g3 = cos x. Find an invertible 3 × 3 matrix P such
that gi = 3i=1 Pij fi .

9. Let V be a vector space of 2×2 matrices over a field F . Find a basis A1 , A2 , A3 , A4

of V such that A2i = Ai for 1 ≤ i ≤ 4.
