COURSE PURPOSE
To provide students with a wide range of knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary for
effective decision making in business and industry
Expected Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course, the learner should be able to:
a. Explain the role of basic mathematics in solving management problems in decision
making.
b. Apply the basic concepts, theories and techniques of mathematics in solving of
management decision problems.

Course Content
1. Probability; the basic Law of probability; Marginal and Conditional Probability; the
contingency tables; Bayes’ rule, tree diagrams;
2. Calculus-Differentiation
Basic principles of differentiation; Differentiation of various functions; Rules of
differentiation, Applications of differentiation – maximization and minimization,
constrained optimization.
3. Calculus-Integration: Basic principles of integration; Integration of various
functions; Rule of integration, Application of integration in Management
4. Matrix Algebra; Different types of matrices; matrix operations; Determinants of
matrices; Inverses of matrices; 2x2 and 3x3 matrices; applications matrices.
5. Input output analysis; Purpose of input output analysis; Assumptions in input output
models; The input output table; Types of input output models; The Technical
coefficients; Limitations of the input output analysis.
6. Decision theory; Steps in decision theory; The structure of decision making
problem; Decision making environments; Decision tree analysis; Expected values and
perfect information,.
TEACHING METHODOLOGY
The course will be taught through the use of lectures, class discussions and assignments.
Students will be required to do extensive reading outside class work.
