For spot rate quotation in general will be denoted as S(j/k) refers
to the price of one unit of currency k in terms of currency j
Currency pairs can be separated into two types, direct and indirect. In
a direct quote the foreign currency is the base currency, while the
domestic currency is the quote currency.
The bid price is the price a dealer is willing to pay you for
something.
The ask price is the amount the dealer wants you to pay for the
thing.
The bid-ask spread is the difference between the bid and ask
prices.
A Forex Trading Bid price is the price at which the market is prepared
to buy a specific currency pair in the Forex trading market. This is the
price that the trader of Forex buys his base currency.
In the quote, the Forex bid price appears to the left of the currency
quote. For example, If the EUR/USD pair is 1.2342/47, then the bid
price is 1.2342. Meaning you can sell the EUR for 1.2342 USD.
A Forex asking price is the price at which the market is ready to sell a
certain Forex Trading currency pair in the online Forex market. This is
the price that the trader buys in. It appears to the right of the Forex
quote. For example, in the same EUR/USD pair of 1.2342/47, the ask
price us 1.2347. This means you can buy one EUR for 1.2347 USD.
Bid-Ask Quotation: Spread is used to calculate the fee charged by the
bank. It is the difference between bid and Ask. Bid = the price at which
the bank is willing to buy Ask = the price it will sell the currency
Some European currency quote to two three decimal where as in American terms quotation
may be carried out as many as seven decimals.
In the interbank market, the standard size trade is about U.S. $10 million.
Spot quotations are good only for few seconds – make his mind in few seconds or quotes will
be withdrawn.
FX traders uses shorthand observations Ex: $1.9072-$1.9077. Here 1.90 is known as big figure
Other two digits is known as small figures. Traders responds within 72-77.
The establishment of bid ask spread will facilitate acquiring and or disposing of
inventory.
Ex: $/£ bid ask quote is 1.9072-1.9077
If trader believes that pound will soon appreciate desire to acquire large amount of
inventory. 73-78 encourages some to sell and some to buy.
If traders thinks pound is ready to depreciate, he sells his inventory. ie 71-76.
The retail bid –ask spread is wider than a interbank spread.
Lower bid and higher ask prices apply to the smaller sums traded at the retail level.
To cover the fixed cost of trade
1500 quotes and 400 traders trades in a day.
CROSS EXCHANGE RATE QUOTATION
Suppose that S($/DM) = .50 What must the $/¥ cross rate be?
i.e. $1 = 2 DM
and that S(¥/DM) = 50
i.e. DM1 = ¥50
$ $ DM
since = ,
¥ DM ¥
$1 DM 1 $1
= S ($ / ¥) = .01 or $1 = ¥100
DM 2 ¥50 ¥100
