CAREERS AND CAREER CHOICES

Requirements for admission to additional and higher education courses ●


Higher education refers to a course that you study at an accredited higher
education institution for example university, university of technology or a
college.
● If you want to study after school you will have to achieve certain marks in
matric in order to be admitted.

TYPES OF QUALIFICATIONS

ADMISSION POINT SCORE


The Admission Point Score (APS) system gives possible points for the marks
that you get in your NSC examinations.
- to higher learning institutions depends on the total number of points you've
achieved.
- In order to qualify for a National Senior Certificate a learner must achieve:
● A minimum of Level 3 (40%) or more in 3 subjects. One of the subjects must
be a Home Language
● A minimum of Level 2 (30%) or more in the other subjects.

HIGHER CERTIFICATE PASS


- Pass a Language either Afrikaans,English etc at 30%

DIPLOMA LEVEL PASS


- One official language at 40%
- 3 other subjects at 40%
- 2 subjects at 30%
BACHELOR LEVEL PASS
- One official language at 40% or more
- 4 subjects at 50% or more
- 2 subjects at a minimum of 30%

Very important to note:


-Specific institutions and programme needs may have a specific language
requirement, a specific level of performance in Life Orientation or require
appropriate combinations of recognised National Senior Certificate subjects
and levels of achievement. Learners must check their results against specific
institution requirements for the course of study they wish to follow.

Answer the following questions
Jonathan is in grade 12. He is interested in Business studies (BCom) and the
medical field. He loves helping people and organising things. At school he is
part of the events organising team, first aid team and tutors after school to
help the younger grades. He is making the final decisions about his career
path. His most recent June report was as follows:
