INDETREMINATE STRUCUTRES
2
Indeterminate Structures:
A structure is statically indeterminate when the static equilibrium equations - force and moment
equilibrium conditions - are insufficient for determining the internal forces and reactions on that structure.
Chapters 10-11-12:
► Consistent Deformation method.
► Slope Deflection method.
► Moment Distribution method.
INDETREMINATE STRUCUTRES
3
Advantages of indeterminate structures:
1- Smaller Stress 2- Greater Stiffness
INDETREMINATE STRUCUTRES
4
3- Redundancies
A catastrophic failure when eliminating the middle pier
INDETREMINATE STRUCUTRES
5
Disadvantages of indeterminate structures:
1- Stress due to support settlements
Any Settlement: No Curvature. No moment Any Settlement: Curvature! Moment!

6
2- Stress due to temperature change
No Stresses. Positions just change Thermal stresses
MOMENT DISTRIBUTION METHOD
7
The moment distribution method is a structural analysis method for statically indeterminate beams and
frames.
Moment distribution is based on the principle of successively locking and unlocking the joints of a structure
in order to allow the moments at the joints to be distributed and balanced.
The best way to explain the method is by examples.

Distribution of Moments
Procedure for Analysis
1- Calculate the relative stiffness and distribution factors between each two connected members.
2- Calculate the fixed end moments by assuming each member as fixed-fixed.
3- Distribute moments between each to connected members by using the distribution factors.
4- Carry these moments in each span over to its other end by multiplying each moment by the carry-over factor +1/2.
5- By repeating this cycle at the joints, it will be found that the moment corrections will diminish since the beam tends to
achieve its final moments.
