PN Junction Diode
• A PN junction diode allows current mainly in one direction.
• Forward bias reduces the barrier potential and allows conduction.
• Reverse bias increases depletion region width and blocks current until breakdown.
Transistor Basics
• A transistor can be used as a switch or amplifier.
• BJT terminals are emitter, base, and collector.
• Small base current controls larger collector current.
MOSFET Basics
• MOSFET is a voltage-controlled device.
• Gate voltage controls current between drain and source.
• Enhancement MOSFET normally stays OFF until required gate voltage is applied.
SCR Basics
• SCR is a controlled rectifier with anode, cathode, and gate.
• Gate pulse turns the SCR ON when anode is positive with respect to cathode.
• After turning ON, SCR continues conducting until current falls below holding current.
Energy Meter Idea
• A single-phase AC energy meter measures electrical energy consumed.
• One unit of electrical energy equals 1 kWh.
• If a 1000 W load runs for 1 hour, energy used is 1 unit.
