The Romantic Period in music began around 1820 and lasted until 1900.

This era came after the Classical Period and focused more on emotion, imagination, and
individuality.

Unlike Classical composers who valued balance and structure (like Mozart and Haydn),
Romantic composers wanted their music to touch the heart and soul of the listener.

II. Characteristics of Romantic Music

Romantic music is all about feeling and expression. Here are its main features:

1. Emotional Expression

Composers expressed deep feelings such as love, sadness, triumph, and despair.

2. Expansion of the Orchestra

More instruments were added to create richer sounds.

Brass and percussion were used to make music more powerful and dramatic.

3. Freedom in Form and Structure-

Composers were no longer strict with Classical forms (like sonata or symphony).

They experimented with program music — pieces that tell a story or paint a scene.

4. Nationalism in Music

Many composers were inspired by their own country’s folk songs and dances.

5. Virtuosity

Some composers were also great performers who showed their amazing skill on instruments.
6. Rich Harmonies and Dynamics

Composers used loud (forte) and soft (piano) passages to show emotional contrasts.

Music often shifted from gentle melodies to dramatic climaxes.
