Cell - Basic Introduction
The cell is the basic structural and functional unit of life. All living organisms are made up of cells.
Cells arise from pre-existing cells. Cells contain genetic material which controls all activities.
Types of Cells
Cells are mainly of two types: Prokaryotic and Eukaryotic. Prokaryotic cells lack a nucleus (e.g.,
bacteria). Eukaryotic cells have a well-defined nucleus (e.g., plant and animal cells).
Cell Structure
Main parts of a cell include cell membrane, cytoplasm, and nucleus. Cell membrane controls entry
and exit of substances. Cytoplasm is the site of metabolic activities.
Cell Organelles
Important organelles include mitochondria (powerhouse), ribosomes (protein synthesis),
endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi apparatus, lysosomes, and vacuoles.
Plant vs Animal Cell
Plant cells have cell wall, chloroplast, and large vacuole. Animal cells lack cell wall and chloroplast
but have centrioles.
