C. Complete the article about consumer societies with the correct comparative form of the
adjectives in the brackets (10pts)
A consumer is a person who buys things, and a consumer society is a society that encourages
people to buy and use goods. Some people think that a consumer society provides people with
better lives. People in consumer societies tend to live more comfortably. They eat a wider
variety of food. They go to restaurants more often. They also buy a lot of products, maybe more
than they need.
Products such as TVs, cell phones, and computers used to be luxuries. Today people can buy
these things more easily than ever before. The market for these goods is growing faster all the
time. Consumer societies encourage people to buy bigger and better products. For example,
“smarter” phones come out every year. In a consumer society, people are often buying newer and
more advanced products. This creates a lot of waste. Nowadays, many people are thinking more
seriously about the effects of consumer societies on the environment, and they are trying to
become more responsible

SECTION 5: WRITING

Ecocentric and technocentric views are both important for protecting the environment and
supporting sustainable development. According to Naess (1973), nature has intrinsic value and
should be respected as an essential part of life, not only for human benefit. From an ecocentric
perspective, people should reduce activities that damage ecosystems, such as deforestation
and pollution. For example, protecting forests and wildlife may help preserve biodiversity for
future generations. In contrast, the technocentric view suggests that technology can solve
environmental problems. McDonough and Braungart (2002) argue that well-designed
technology can possibly create safer and more sustainable systems. For instance, renewable
energy and electric vehicles could reduce air pollution and dependence on fossil fuels. UNESCO
(2017) states that balancing ecological responsibility with technological development is
essential for sustainability. Therefore, combining ecocentric and technocentric ideas is likely to
create a healthier and more sustainable future for humanity and the planet.
