ABSTRACT
The project titled “SMART AUTOMATIC DUSTBINE USING
ARDUINO NANO” is an innovative and practical solution developed
to improve cleanliness, hygiene, and convenience in waste disposal
systems. Traditional dustbins require users to manually open the lid,
which may lead to the spread of germs and cause inconvenience,
especially in places such as hospitals, kitchens, offices, schools, and
public areas. To overcome these limitations, this project redesigns a
conventional dustbin into an automatic touchless dustbin using low-
cost embedded technology.
The proposed system is developed using an Arduino Nano
microcontroller, HC-SR04 ultrasonic sensor, and SG90 servo
motor. The ultrasonic sensor continuously monitors the distance of
any object or hand placed near the dustbin. When a hand is
detected within a preset range, the sensor sends input signals to the
Arduino Nano. The microcontroller processes the data and activates
the servo motor, which automatically opens the lid of the dustbin.
After a few seconds, the lid closes automatically, making the entire
operation touch-free and user-friendly.
This project represents the concept of Re-Engineering for
Innovation, where an ordinary household product is upgraded with
modern automation features to increase its functionality and value.
The system is compact, economical, easy to assemble, and
consumes very low power. It is highly suitable for domestic and
commercial applications where hygiene and smart waste handling
are important.
The Smart Automatic Dustbin not only promotes clean and healthy
surroundings but also demonstrates the practical use of sensors,
actuators, and microcontroller programming in real-time
applications. It is an excellent educational project for students to
understand automation, embedded systems, and innovative product
development.

1 . INTRODUCTION
1.1Introduction to Smart Waste Management
Waste management is the process of collecting, handling, and disposing of
waste in a safe and efficient manner. With increasing population and
urbanization, proper waste management has become very important.
Smart waste management uses modern technologies such as sensors,
automation, and controllers to improve cleanliness and reduce manual
work. The Smart Automatic Dustbin is an example of smart waste
management, where the lid opens automatically when a hand is detected.
1.2 Need for Automation
Automation is needed to reduce human effort, save time, and improve
convenience. Traditional dustbins require users to open the lid manually,
which may be inconvenient and unhygienic. By using automation, the
dustbin can open and close automatically without touching it. This makes
waste disposal easier and more efficient.
1.3 Importance of Touchless Systems
Touchless systems operate without direct physical contact. They help
maintain hygiene by reducing the spread of germs and bacteria. Such
systems are widely used in hospitals, offices, homes, and public places. In
this project, the dustbin lid opens automatically when a hand is placed
near the sensor, making it a touchless and user-friendly system.
1.4 Scope of the Project
The Smart Automatic Dustbin can be used in homes, kitchens, hospitals,
offices, schools, and public areas. It is a low-cost and practical project that
improves cleanliness and convenience. The project can also be upgraded
in the future with features like garbage level detection, IoT monitoring,
and solar power.
2 . PROBLEM STATEMENT
2.1 Existing Traditional Dustbin System
Traditional dustbins are commonly used in homes, schools, offices, hospitals, and public
places for collecting waste materials. These dustbins are usually made of plastic or metal and
are available in different sizes and shapes. In most cases, the user has to manually open the
lid by hand or by using a foot pedal. After disposing of the waste, the lid is closed manually
or automatically by spring action. Traditional dustbins are simple, affordable, and easy to use,
but they do not include any smart or automatic features.
2.2 Drawbacks of Manual Dustbins
Manual dustbins have several disadvantages in modern environments. Users need to touch
the lid, which may spread germs, bacteria, and viruses, especially when many people use the
same dustbin. Opening the lid can also be inconvenient when hands are occupied or dirty. In
some cases, users may avoid touching the lid and throw waste improperly, making the
surroundings unclean. If the lid remains open, bad odor can spread into the area. Foot pedal
dustbins may also fail due to mechanical wear and tear over time. These issues reduce
hygiene, convenience, and efficiency.
2.3 Need for Re-Engineering
To overcome the limitations of traditional dustbins, re-engineering is necessary. Re-
engineering means improving an existing product using modern technology to increase its
performance and usefulness. By adding an Arduino Nano, ultrasonic sensor, and servo motor,
a normal dustbin can be converted into a Smart Automatic Dustbin. This system opens the lid
automatically when a hand is detected, providing touchless operation, improved hygiene, and
user convenience. Therefore, re-engineering a traditional dustbin into a smart dustbin is an
effective and practical innovation for modern waste management.
3 . RE-ENGINEERING FOR INNOVATION
3.1Concept of Re-Engineering
Re-engineering is the process of redesigning or improving an existing
product, system, or process to enhance its performance, efficiency, and
usefulness. Instead of creating a completely new product, re-engineering
focuses on modifying the current design by adding new features, modern
technology, or better working methods. It helps in reducing cost, saving
time, and improving product quality.
In engineering, re-engineering is widely used to upgrade traditional
products according to modern needs. Many old products are improved by
using automation, sensors, electronics, and smart control systems. This
makes them more user-friendly, efficient, and reliable. Re-engineering is
important because it allows simple everyday products to become
advanced and innovative solutions.
3.2 Innovation in Existing Products
Innovation means introducing new ideas or improvements that make a
product more valuable and useful. Many existing products can be
upgraded with modern technology to provide better performance and
convenience. Instead of replacing the product completely, innovation adds
smart features to the current design.
Innovation improves comfort, saves energy, reduces human effort, and
increases hygiene. It also helps in creating low-cost smart products for
daily life.
3.3 Smart Dustbin as a Re-Engineered Product
The Smart Automatic Dustbin is a perfect example of re-engineering for
innovation. A normal dustbin is a basic waste collection product that
requires manual opening of the lid. By adding an Arduino Nano, ultrasonic
sensor, and servo motor, the traditional dustbin is transformed into a
modern touchless automatic dustbin.
In this system, the ultrasonic sensor detects the presence of a hand near
the lid. The Arduino Nano processes the signal and controls the servo
motor to open the lid automatically. After a few seconds, the lid closes
automatically. This makes waste disposal more hygienic, convenient, and
efficient.

12.2 Code Explanation
The program uses the Servo library to control the servo motor. The
ultrasonic sensor pins are connected to digital pins D9 and D10. In the
setup() function, the servo motor is attached to pin D6, and the sensor
pins are initialized.
In the loop() function, the ultrasonic sensor sends sound waves and
receives the reflected signal. Based on the time taken for the echo, the
distance is calculated. If the detected object is within 15 cm, the servo
motor rotates to 90 degrees and opens the lid. After 3 seconds, the servo
returns to 0 degrees and closes the lid automatically.

2. Open Arduino IDE software.
3. Copy and paste the source code.
4. Select Board: Arduino Nano.
5. Select the correct COM Port.
6. Choose processor if required (ATmega328P / Old Bootloader).
7. Click Upload button.
8. After successful upload, power the circuit and test the project.
13 . WORKING PRINCIPLE
13.1 Sensor Detection Process
The Smart Automatic Dustbin uses an HC-SR04 ultrasonic sensor to
detect the presence of a hand or object near the dustbin. The sensor
sends ultrasonic sound waves and waits for the reflected echo signal.
Based on the time taken for the echo to return, the distance between the
object and sensor is calculated. When a hand comes within the preset
range, the sensor sends the information to the Arduino Nano.
13.2 Arduino Processing
The Arduino Nano acts as the main controller of the system. It
continuously reads the distance values from the ultrasonic sensor. When
the measured distance is less than the set limit (for example 15 cm), the
Arduino processes the signal and decides to open the dustbin lid. It then
sends control signals to the servo motor.
13.3 Servo Motor Operation
The SG90 servo motor is connected to the dustbin lid. When the Arduino
sends the command, the servo motor rotates to a specific angle such as
90 degrees. This movement opens the lid of the dustbin. After receiving
the next command, the servo rotates back to its original position and
closes the lid.
13.4 Automatic Lid Opening and Closing
When a user places their hand near the sensor, the lid opens
automatically without touching the dustbin. The lid remains open for a few
seconds to allow waste disposal. After the delay time is completed, the lid
closes automatically. This process repeats continuously whenever a hand
is detected, making the system hygienic, convenient, and fully automatic.
14 . TESTING AND RESULTS
14.1 Testing Procedure
After completing the assembly and programming of the Smart Automatic
Dustbin, the system was tested to verify its proper operation. First, all
wiring connections were checked carefully. The Arduino Nano was
powered using a USB cable or 5V supply. The uploaded program was
executed, and the ultrasonic sensor was placed in the correct position.
A hand was moved near the sensor at different distances to test object
detection. When the hand came within the preset range, the response of
the servo motor and lid movement was observed. Multiple trials were
performed to check consistency, accuracy, and smooth working of the
system.
14.2 Observations
During testing, the ultrasonic sensor successfully detected the presence of
a hand near the dustbin. The Arduino Nano processed the signal correctly
and activated the servo motor. The lid opened smoothly when an object
was detected and closed automatically after a few seconds.
The response time of the system was quick and reliable. The servo motor
operated properly without delay. The project worked effectively with a
stable 5V power supply. It was also observed that proper alignment of the
servo motor improved lid movement.
14.3 Final Output Results
The final output of the project was successful. The Smart Automatic
Dustbin performed touchless lid opening and closing as intended. It
reduced the need for manual contact and improved hygiene during waste
disposal.
The project proved to be a low-cost, efficient, and user-friendly solution for
smart waste management. It is suitable for use in homes, hospitals,
offices, schools, and public places.

16 . MAINTENANCE AND SAFETY
16.1 Maintenance Tips
Proper maintenance is important to ensure the smooth and long-term
operation of the Smart Automatic Dustbin. Regular cleaning of the dustbin
body should be done to maintain hygiene and prevent bad odor. The
ultrasonic sensor surface must be kept clean and free from dust, dirt, or
moisture because dirt on the sensor may affect accurate hand detection.
All electrical connections should be checked periodically to ensure that
jumper wires are properly connected and not loose. Damaged wires
should be replaced immediately. The breadboard and Arduino Nano should
be kept in a dry and protected area inside the dustbin body.
The servo motor must be fixed firmly near the lid mechanism. If the servo
becomes loose, the lid may not open or close properly. Lubrication or
adjustment of the lid hinge may be required if movement becomes hard.
Use only a stable 5V power supply or quality USB source to avoid sudden
resets or improper operation.
Regular inspection of all components helps to improve reliability and
extend the life of the project.
16.2 Safety Precautions
Safety precautions must be followed while using and handling the Smart
Automatic Dustbin. Since the project uses electronic components, water
and moisture should be kept away from the circuit. Exposure to water may
damage the Arduino Nano, sensor, and servo motor.
Do not use a heavy dustbin lid because the SG90 servo motor is designed
for lightweight loads. Overloading the servo motor may cause damage or
reduced performance. Handle all wires carefully and avoid loose
connections to prevent short circuits.
Always switch off the power supply before changing wiring connections or
performing repairs. Do not touch exposed wires while power is on. Keep
the project away from excessive heat, fire, and direct sunlight.
The dustbin should be placed on a stable and flat surface to avoid falling
or accidental damage. Children should use the system under supervision if
necessary. Following these safety precautions ensures safe and reliable
operation of the project.
