Missing Letter (Wax Resist) Experiment

Materials

 Chart (hard sheet / hard chart paper)


 Candle ( not lit)
 Paint mixed with water
 Paint brush

The Steps

The teacher writes a letter or word on the chart using a candle.

The teacher shows the chart to the children and asks if they can see the
letter.

The teacher gives the children paint mixed with water and a paint brush.

The children paint over the chart.

The hidden letter appears as the paint is applied.

Observations

 Can you see the letter before painting?


 What happens when you paint over the chart?
 Where does the paint stay?
 Where does the paint not stay?
 Does the paint cover the whole paper?
 Does the letter appear slowly or quickly?

Objectives

 Observe how wax resists water-based paint.


 Identify missing letters through a simple experiment.
 Develop observation and curiosity skills.

The Hows and Whys

Candle wax does not mix with water.

When the teacher writes on the chart with a candle, wax stays on the
surface.

When paint mixed with water is brushed over the chart, the paint cannot
stick to the wax.

That is why the missing letter appears.
