code Gotfred writes mostly alone, including a custom tracker called Hyper Cube that
coordinates file sharing across millions of machines simultaneously. At peak, [music] 25
million peers worldwide connect through Pirate Bay's infrastructure. Enough traffic to rank
among the internet's top [music] 100 sites. The interface stays deliberately bare. a search
bar, a pirate ship logo, and an ocean of content. Under that simplicity, Gotfred architects
something approaching digital immortality. Every new user makes the network harder to
destroy. Every shared file creates redundancy. It's not a website anymore. It's a living
organism, growing faster than anyone can regulate it. The Motion Picture Association of
America watches this growth with mounting fury. Their lawsuits against individual
downloaders aren't working. The real target is the infrastructure making it all possible. And
that infrastructure has a home address in Sweden. By early 2006, MPAA lobbyists are

due to illness. Unofficially, Swedish media reports he's fled to Cambodia. Frederick Nye

Speaking at hacker conferences, Carl Lundststrom serves his brief term under house arrest.
But Gotfred, the architect, the coder, the engineer who built the machine, he's gone
completely dark. Interpol red notices go out. Swedish diplomats contact Southeast Asian
governments. How do you arrest a ghost who lives on encrypted communication and moves

survive. But Godfred's personal story is about to take a darker turn. The Swedish
government isn't finished with him, and neither are the Danes. New charges are coming that
go far beyond copyright infringement. These charges involve government databases, stolen

Cambodia. A joint task force, Swedish officials and Cambodian police, moves on a
waterfront apartment in the capital. The door splinters. Inside, they find a bearded
27-year-old hunched over a laptop surrounded by empty energy drink cans and takeout
containers. Gotfrieded Smart is arrested without resistance. Within 72 hours, he's on a flight
back to Stockholm, deported at Sweden's urgent request. The pirate who eluded a copyright
conviction for 16 months is now in custody to serve his one-year pirate bay sentence. But
Swedish prosecutors have bigger plans. They suspect his time off grid wasn't just hiding.
They believe he was hacking. New charges hit before he even finishes processing into
prison. unauthorized access to Swedish government databases and attempted bank fraud
investigators alleged that between 2010 and 2012, while Gotfred was supposedly a fugitive
laying low, someone using his computers breached servers at Logica, an IT contractor
managing Sweden's tax authority systems, the intrusion accessed national tax IDs for
thousands of Swedes and attempted to issue fraudulent driver's licenses. Even more
audacious, evidence suggests an attempt to penetrate Nordia Bank systems and initiate
unauthorized transfers. The narrative shifts. Gotfred isn't just a copyright rebel anymore.
He's being framed as a black hat hacker threatening state infrastructure. Gotfred denies
everything. His defense is technical and specific. His laptop was compromised by unknown
parties who used it as a proxy. I was a puppet, he tells his lawyer. presenting forensic
evidence that malware was found on his machine. Someone remote controlled his computer
to conduct attacks while he was in Cambodia. It's plausible. Security researchers confirm his
system was infected, but prosecutors argue he's sophisticated enough to have staged that
infection himself. The trial in 2013 is technical, dense, and divided. The Swedish court
delivers a split verdict. guilty of hacking into Logica systems and accessing confidential

own case. Denmark has been investigating a devastating hack of their own. In 2012,
someone breached CSC, a major IT contractor managing Danish police databases and
social security systems. The intrusion stole personal identification numbers for millions of
Danish citizens and accessed sensitive law enforcement records. It's one of the worst cyber
security breaches in Scandinavian history. Danish investigators trace chat logs and digital
fingerprints to a familiar alias, Anacotta. In late 2013, as Gotfred finishes his Swedish
sentence, Denmark requests extradition. He's immediately transferred to Copenhagen and
placed in solitary confinement. The Danish trial in October 2014 is intense and unforgiving.
Prosecutors present evidence of a six-month intrusion into CSC's mainframes, but his
defense doubles down on the evil twin theory. The real person behind those IRC chat
handles, wasn't Godfred at all. His codefendant, a 21-year-old Danish hacker, testifies he
met the true Anakata, and it wasn't Smartarthome. It's a bold strategy, claiming someone
else used Gotfried's alias and equipment to commit the crimes. The jury doesn't buy it. The
forensic evidence is overwhelming. Stolen CSC data on his drives, access patterns matching
his known equipment, chat logs using his distinctive phrasing. On October 27th, 2014, the
guilty verdict arrived. The sentence is crushing. 3 and 1/2 years in prison, the harshest
hacking sentence in Danish history at that point. His co-fendant, portrayed as a minor
accomplice, receives a lenient sentence and walks free with time served. Gotfred, hearing
the verdict, shows no emotion. Three years of running, two trials, and multiple convictions
have drained the fight from his face. September 2015. Godfred walks out of a Danish prison
thin [music] and hardened. Denmark attempts to deport him immediately, but Swedish police
rearrest him on the prison steps for a final one-mon sentence. Bureaucratic leftovers from
the hacking convictions. By December 2015, all debts are paid. He's finally free. His mother
meets him at the gates, telling reporters he just wants to sit by a keyboard again after 3
years away from one. Gotfred has lived the complete hacker narrative. creation, glory,
[music] exile, conviction, imprisonment, release. And the pirate bay, still online, still serving
torrent from servers hosted in locations authorities can't easily reach, maintained by
anonymous admins and true believers. The site has outlived multiple raids, dozens of
domain [music] seizures, and the imprisonment of all three founders. It's not as dominant as
it once was. Streaming services and fragmented [music] file sharing have changed the
landscape, but type the URL and you'll find it. Or one of countless proxies still sailing. The
Pirate Bay proved a brutal lesson. You can't kill what has no center. But some people never
learn. In 2011, a cyber security executive named Aaron Bar thought he'd cracked the code
he believed he could unmask Anonymous, another faceless, leaderless movement that had
already brought down corporations and governments. Bar was so confident he announced
his plan publicly. He'd expose Anonymous's leadership, prove they weren't untouchable, and
sell his intelligence to the FBI. He had names. He had evidence. He had a plan. What he
didn't have was any idea what he just started. Within 72 hours, Anonymous retaliated in a
way that would make the pirate bays raids look gentle. They didn't just hack HB Jerry, they

corrupt nations in the region yet even this less than ideal position is Paradise compared to
what it was a little over 30 years ago in the mid 1980s the Albanian state was a communist
hermit Kingdom that ranked as the third poorest country in the world not just in Europe it was
ruled by a paranoid dictator who carried out Stalin as purges against political dissidents and
kept the populace docile through a network of prisons and brutal secret police almost
completely diplomatically and economically isolated the country resisted the modernizing
influences of its neighbors and even the rest of the Communist block and remained a relic of
a totalitarian past it was Europe's North Korea an equivalent in all respects except for its
geography and Longevity and here is its Story one of the dictator en vosa and his paranoia
of a mysterious isolated neighborhood in the nation's capital and life within the state stuck in
time 20th century Albania was a nation full forged in The Crucible of conflict it was invaded
by Italy in 1939 and only managed to free itself from fascism 5 years later after a German
occupation retreated from the southern Balkans in late 1944 what remained in their place
was the remnant of collaborationists monarchists nationalists and communist partisans in
this power vacuum a relatively unknown variable by the name of enaer emerged at the top of
the country's foremost political entity the party of Labor of Albania or the pla even the
country's most well-read chroniclers are puzzled by exactly how this unexceptional man
achieved such a feat he was not particularly intelligent nor was he influential in the party his
presence at the party's founding was speculated to be a bid to meet religious quotas all other
members were Christian and they needed a Muslim member to be representative of the
population by all accounts he was just in the right place at the right time had a handful of
influential allies and crucially had the stomach to snatch the opportunity with a clinical
viciousness his unscrupulous strategies would see him become a paranoid despot rivaled
only by his contemporary in North Korea Kim mils posa's Cutthroat approach to ensuring in
his political Supremacy would be demonstrated as soon as the German occupiers began
pulling out of the Balkans in late 1944 as the verar retreated northwards the Communist
controlled National Liberation Army or the nla directed by the 34-year-old HOA shadowed
them and conducted a political cleansing campaign in the abandoned areas where all
perceived political opponents were liquidated in these early days of centralizing power hure
display a brutality that would become characteristic of his rule in the words of one New
Republic journalist quote HOA ordered purges like other people order out for pizza on
numerous occasions he would order the arrest torture and killing of former allies and
enemies alike as well as people he resented on a personal level out of jealousy he once had
a prominent communist by the name of Lazar fundo tortured to death because because he
was a successful Envoy to Comm turn the supranational organization that sought to spark
World Revolution and because he had insulted him in the past H's personal dislike of fundo
was Amplified by rumors from Yugoslavia that he might be a subversive trotskyist a alleged
revisionist that wanted to pervert Marxist ideology this was a common charge used in the
Communist nations of the time and the accusation typically held very little water it was
usually employed to justify the elimination of a nuisance to the established leadership for
HOA it was just a convenient excuse to persecute someone he already despised and viewed
as a potential rival hza must have realized though that if he could determine fund's
Associates he too could brand them trotskyists so he asked that when captured the torturers
extracted the names of fund's allies and the p La HOA was always on the lookout for
information that could provide him leverage over others this political vigilance however would
end up turning HOA into the most paranoid man in Europe over the course of his 41-year
rule from 1944 to 1985 the dictator would kill founding party members so that they could not
use their seniority to undermine his legitimacy and he would have childhood friends
executed or sent to prison for straying from the party line like Stalin the man after which he
modeled many of his own policies and his own Cult of the personality hoer would further
alter the past by expunging those who had been purged from the historical records to raise
evidence of anyone's prior involvement with the pla he would have the faces of disgraced
politicians scratched from photos as if they had never existed eliminating even the smallest
traces of opposition when his right-hand man and presumed Heir meu died due to an
apparent suicide in 1981 there was speculation that hza had ordered his death not least
because immediately after his demise the dictator announced absurdly that shahu had been
a traitor all along and had been in fact an agent not just for the Soviets but also for the
Americans if Shah who's death was indeed a suicide side it was one only in name days
before his death HOA had forced him to engage in self-criticism for allowing his son to be
engaged to a woman who had anti-communist relatives in America when hza summoned the
poit bureau Albania's governing body to discuss the Scandal shahu must have suspected
that his time was drawing near and decided to take matters into his own hands hja had not
pulled the trigger but he had given sheu the gun so to say shahu was as close to stubbornly
loyal as you could get domestic observers and party officials testified that he had never
engaged in policy disagreement with HOA and was utterly subservient American intelligence
sources believe the same they doubted that shahu would ever challenge H's Authority
perhaps the reason for H's actions aside from the laughable assertion of the second most
powerful man in the country being a double agent for two rival Powers was that shahu was
toying with the idea of tempering Albania's isolationism it was reported that he had recently
conducted diplomacy with the capitalist nations of Europe and Yugoslavia Albania's longtime
rival hja notoriously paranoid of foreign influences and favoring isolationism may have felt
undermined alternatively some intelligence reports argue that by 1981 posa was in favor of a
degree of increased interaction with the Western world if this is the case then his targeting of
Shu may have been entirely personal something we will get into in the last chapter of this
video hoa's heavy isolationist slant during his time in power is perhaps one of the most
obvious parallels to North Korea like the Korean hermit Kingdom Albania shunned Nations
that should have been its allies both HOA and kimil sang would break with the Soviet Union
and China effectively alienating the only countries that would have any reason to support
them Albania already kept Every Nation on Earth at arms length a policy manifested in the
general hostility to any foreign but particularly Western Products ideas art or media the
aversion was so extreme that in 1979 one artist by the name of Mark V was sentenced to 10
years of hard labor in one of the country's most brutal prisons just for producing art that
showed traces of quote foreign influences this alien ination of all allies and suspicion of all
things foreign meant that hza could present the rest of the world however he wished if he

he could and that is what he did when the American reporter Harrison Salsbury visited the
country in 1957 he noted that albanians believed America was orchestrating a plot to place
the exiled King Zog back on the throne Zog had been deposed by the Italian invasion of
1939 and his feared reinstatement would see Albania transformed back into a medieval
surom this sort of sentiment was a product of Albania's propaganda machine now the United
Kingdom and the United States had tried to overthrow oa's government in the years after
World War II under the highly classified code name operation valuable fiend but they had
failed miserably and since 1954 had given up on the prospect of subverting Communism in
Albania but this operation had two lasting effects it formed the basis of H's foreign paranoia

life he had been careful to present himself as the sole cause of Albania's Good Fortune as

cited him as the architect Behind The Liberation and all the victories against the fascists

Trump begins with his speech things seem normal he turns to the right and points at a chart
showing statistics on border crossings at the same time time several people in the crowd
notice a man with a gun on the roof of a building close by he it's too late take a look what
happened all of a sudden bullets start flying one even gets captured on camera another
building about 400 ft or 120 M north of the stage the shots are coming from here on the roof
the gunman is 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Kooks he is armed with an AR-15
semi-automatic rifle the gun was legally purchased by his father first he apparently fires
around of three shots take a look at what happened Trump reaches up with his hand the first
bullet pierces the upper part of his right ear he will later say that turning over to the right at
that exact moment prevented the bullet from hitting him right in the head he Ducks down
behind the podium and within 3 to 4 seconds after the first shot secret service agent
swarmed the former president and Shield him with their bodies Crooks opens fire again
immediately with five more shots right before the first shot by Crooks one of the snipers on
the left roof behind Trump seems to detect the gunman and prepares to return fire take a
look at what happened some Outlets report that these snipers killed Crooks while the secret
service confirmed its Personnel neutralize the shooter we could not corroborate that it was in
fact these specific agents the gunmen also hit spectators on the bleachers one man died
50-year-old Cory comprador two others were critically injured with Trump's microphone still
on we can hear the tense exchanges among the agents on ready on you Mo about 42
seconds after Crook's open fire they confirm the shooter is down we good Shooters down
are we good to move we clear we we're they prepare to escort him to an armored vehicle let

75 seconds after ducking to the ground Trump raises his fist he's mouthing the words fight

questions we don't have an answer to right now why were the forces unable to prevent the
attack analysis on X suggests that at least the snipers on the roof behind Trump were likely
Scouting For dangers further away with this rooftop possibly falling into the responsibility of
other law enforcement agents we were unable to corroborate that why couldn't our men
climb up on this building what was krook's motive the Gman had no criminal history in
Pennsylvania's public court records the New York Times found a voter registration record for
Crooks it shows that he was registered as a republican they also found that he donated $15
to a liberal voter turnout group through a democratic donation platform in 2021 he was a
kitchen worker and had a membership at a local shooting club the FBI found suspicious
devices in both his car and home they are being evaluated by the agency at the time of this
recording the investigation is ongoing and new information is being published by the minute
President Biden and various leaders around the world condemn the attack and political
violence at large the picture of trump bloodied but defiant with a raised fist in front of the
American flag will surely become a powerful symbol in his re-election campaign

How an FBI Agent Infiltrated the KKK

If there's any snitches in the group, we kill the snitches and they fire shots out of a gun.
Boom. Boom. And everybody's kind of getting scared. >> April 21, 2017. A group of men
stand in a remote field in the middle of Alabama. >> It was nighttime and I am blindfolded.
I've been instructed to place my right hand on the right shoulder of the person in front of me
in line because that signifies brotherhood. The Brotherhood is the Ku Klux Clan, the United
States's oldest, most notorious white supremacist hate group. This is one of their
ceremonies. What they don't know, one of them is an FBI undercover agent, and he's no
lightweight, 6'4, 260 lb, covered in tattoos. His nickname, Hillbilly Donnie Brasco. He's gone
undercover as a contract killer, a contraband smuggler, an arms dealer. He's put dozens of
people behind bars from drug dealers to violent motorcycle gangs to pedophiles. He's
befriended and brought down biker gangs and neo-Nazis. People who are planning
kidnappings, murders, and the overall downfall of society. >> And when he was saying,
"We're going on a camping trip," what he was saying is, "We're going to kill somebody." And
everybody's screaming, "Death to your, you know, f your Jewish God. Death to America."
And then somebody says, "If there's any snitches in the group, we kill the snitches." and they
fire shots out of a gun. Boom. Boom. >> We drove all the way over to his ranch in
Tennessee and he told us everything. This is the story of Scott Payne, the redneck turned
FBI agent who infiltrated America's underbelly. [music] >> [music] >> The majority of this

I saw was a watery image. It was uh completely red and there was a demon looking at me in
that watery kind of ripple image with a grin and long crooked finger looking at me saying
come here smiling. Scott is 14 years old and he's just seen a demon. The year before his
parents divorced and Scott went down a dark path. Consulting spirits, watching diabolical
horror movies, satanic rituals, deals with the devil. That's what brought him here. a friend's
house spending the night. They've had a small amount of alcohol, but no drugs, no
hallucinogens. >> I would do like these little vignettes where I would pretend I was being
possessed by a demon or I was the devil or whatever. I was on the couch and I was doing
this scene from a movie where somebody is like being possessed by a demon. And so I'm
fighting in my voice and then the demon voice comes in and there's this battle and at the end
the demon wins and possesses the person. So that's what I act like happened and I'm
laughing like the demon and I rolled over. >> It all started as a mock demonic possession,
but then he actually saw a demonic figure and this was his breaking point. >> So let's just
say after the demon scare, I got Jesus scared back into me and that was it. Not that the devil
was down with me, but I was down with him. [laughter] >> Halloween night 2019. This is
Scott on his final major undercover mission. And this is a goat. It was stolen and is now at
the center of a pagan ritual. It's been nearly 35 years since [music] Scott's first encounter
with the devil. But on this night, the devil is all around him. And he's definitely not done with
Scott. >> Now, we're all in a circle around the goat. Somehow I ended up at the back of it. I
don't know how. It was bad luck on my part, I guess. But I'm holding the legs of the goat.
He's got this blade and he's bringing it up and bringing it down in a practice swing. Practice
swing. Practice swing. And finally, somebody says, "Just do it." Eisen comes down with
every bit of force he's got and hits the back strap of the goat. And I don't even know if it
broke a hair. I don't know if it's because the backstrap's too thick. Uh the blade was too dull,
but he hit it and all you heard the goat was just go and I'm like, "Oh man, this is going to get
bloody and bad real fast." >> The man swings again again. Nothing. Finally, the blade is
replaced with a gun. >> I said, "Whoa, whoa, whoa." And he's like, "What?" I'm like, "Man,
look at what you're shooting at. We're all in a circle around this thing." And then he looks,
puts a round right in the head of the goat and it hits the ground. So you think you're done.
No, you're not done. Now they slice the throat of the goat and they fill up a cup full of blood.
>> One of them pulls out a sheet of LSD. He approaches each man one by one. Basically,
they would take the hit of acid under their tongue, chase it with the blood of the goat to
signify the sacrifice or or solidify the sacrifice. >> Scott is one of the few who decline. >> So,
when it gets around to me at the end, I'm looking at the blood and it's already coagulated. It's
all chunky and clotty, and I'm looking at it going, "Man, I really don't want to turn this up and
drink it. I mean, this is disgusting." So, I dipped my fingers deep into the blood, pulled them
out, and then sucked all the blood off my fingers. >> This is not the Ku Klux Clan. This group
is younger, better equipped, and preparing for a blood bath. And not only animal blood, but
the blood of any human who isn't one of them. Jewish and black Americans, and anyone
they consider traders to the white race. They're by far the most dangerous group Scott will
ever infiltrate. Unfortunately for these tripping, bloodrinking white supremacists, Scott Payne
has other plans. It's exactly the kind of thing he spent the last 17 years working to prevent. I
became an FBI agent in 1998 and uh by 2002 I'd already done some undercovers for the
FBI, but I wasn't yet certified through the FBI undercover school. So I finally got a slot. >>
September 2002, Quantico, Virginia. This is the FBI Academy. If you make it through the
year-long application process, if you pass the physical and psychological assessments, the
tests, the polygraphs, the interviews, the background checks, if you make it through all that,
you end up here in a 20we training program. If you get through the 20 weeks, you become
an FBI agent. Scott's been here before. Now he's back. About to start the training program
for undercover agents. Getting admission to the program is hard enough. Graduating is even
harder. Only about half the admittes make it through. It's a two-eek school with no days off.
We're very big on sleep deprivation. Um you're going through multiple scenarios of of all
shapes and sizes. Um and it's [music] there's only 20 slots for the class. >> Others break
down. They make missteps during the high pressure scenarios. They grow delirious and
erratic from the lack [music] of sleep. But Scott thrives. The sleep deprivation, the relentless
roleplay, the grueling exercise. If anything, he feeds on it. Meanwhile, he's learning from his
idols, legendary FBI agents like Joe Piston, who spent 6 years undercover with the Bunano
crime family, but they don't always notice him. >> So, I remember Joe Piston coming to
speak and I was like a a kid in a candy store, man. I'm like, "Oh my gosh, this is Donnie
Brasco. This dude did 6 years undercover in the mafia and uh he's teaching, but he has this
he has this thing where he keeps kind of wanting to walk right up to the desk. So [laughter]
he kept stepping on my feet and I, you know, I was trying to get out of his way and then
finally as he's teaching, he just looks down at me and he says, "Jesus, kid, either you got the
biggest feet I've ever seen or I can't see." And he throws a couple of bucks on the desk cuz
he's like still in mafia mode. He throws a couple He goes, "Hey, go get yourself a shine on
me." And uh I just took my feet and shoved them under the seat, man. Joe Pistone may
have scuffed up Scott's shoes. What neither of them could have known at the time is that

looking on paper, I really didn't jump out. >> Scott doesn't have a fancy degree. He doesn't
speak any foreign languages. His nickname is big country for obvious reasons. So he begins
to work as an instructor at the school he just graduated from. Unorthodox, but it got him
noticed by the right people. >> I'm roleplaying in these scenarios and people that are there
who were senior undercovers are watching cuz they're trying to recruit for other cases. And
that's how my name started getting out there. >> So after months, there's finally a possible
assignment. One that Scott is perfect for. Sure, he's a redneck with almost no foreign
language skills, not suitable for many undercovers. But he has something most other agents
don't. He doesn't need to pretend to be a hard- misfit. He is one. He knows he'll feel at home
where he's about to go, but he has no idea how close he'll grow to the criminals he's been
assigned to infiltrate and how hard it will be to turn on them. >> People always have their
own opinion of what undercover work is. Um, some people say it's acting, some people say
it's lying. Essentially, this is the definition [snorts] of undercover work. You are building
relationships that you're going to betray. Scott is on a mission and his targets, these men,
have just arrived. They're members of the Outlaws Motorcycle Club, the main rivals of the
Hell's Angels. They've been implicated in drug trafficking, prostitution rings,
moneyaundering, the list goes on. And they're notorious for violence against rival gangs.
Infiltrating them is exceedingly difficult. Scott Payne is here to do just that. But there's a
problem. Part of the intelligence Scott was given is wrong. He was told they wouldn't be
wearing their colors. Obviously, they are. Scott has hoped to strike up a casual conversation,
letting the topic of motorcycles arise naturally. But these guys are advertising their gang
affiliation. He can't just go up and say, "Hey, you guys ride." His only choice is to make them
come to him. Luckily, another part of the intelligence is right. This guy road named Spanky
loves to be the center of attention. So Scott steals it. He works the crowd. He tells jokes. He
talks loudly. He draws attention to himself, making Spanky want [music] to steal it back.
Soon enough, Spanky asks where Scott is from and sends him a drink. >> Spanky's called
me over. He's introducing me to other people. And of course, I'm getting more scrutiny. The
more people I meet, the more scrutinized I am. >> Everything seems to be going well, but
the real scrutiny happens somewhere else. So I walk into the bathroom and as I'm at the
urinal and a lot of bars there's like a little box in front of the urinal plex of glass. It might be
flyers for a band coming up or a stripper coming to town or something like that. So I can see
a little bit of a reflection and I see this jacked big dude come walking in [music] and I see him
looking at each stall and he's like, "Okay, that's empty." I see him looking under the stalls to
make sure nobody's in there and I'm watching this from a reflection and then he comes
walking up right beside me and for a split second I thought I'm getting jumped. I'm getting
jacked right here. And uh that didn't happen. He says, "So what brings you to
Massachusetts?" >> All undercover FBI agents have a legend, a detailed madeup backstory
that they have to commit to memory. He's from deep south Texas up in Massachusetts for
work. He loves Harley's and whiskey and his name is Scott Callaway. As it so happens, the
guy grilling him in the bathroom is also named Scott. [music] Scott Town. >> A lot of
undercovers, you bond with people, especially deep undercover long term. But there's never
been another person I bonded with closer than Scott Town. >> For a year and a half, Scott
gets to know the outlaws. He drinks with them, rides with them, fights alongside them. He
gains their trust. He becomes their friend. They call him Tex. Scott's legend may be a lie, but
the friendships are real. Scott Town becomes like a brother. >> He likes to drink. I like to
drink. He likes to fight. I like to fight. He likes to ride and lift. I like to ride and lift. We
completed each other's sentences. We were just kind of cut from the same cloth. >> They
even both have a daughter who's the exact same age. Scott Town is kind of a doppelganger.
The person Scott Payne might have become had he not gone into law enforcement. Another
gang member, Brian Devaga, aka closine, also becomes a close friend of Scots. He said,
"And these guys are my brothers and I grew up around them." He said, "But I really don't
have that many friends. Somebody that I know would take a bullet for me and that I would
take a bullet for." And in my mind, I'm looking at his face and I'm going, "Oh, no, man. Don't
say it." And he looks at me and says, "You're one of those guys." Tomorrow is the big day.
Over the course of last year, Scott has convinced the outlaws that he's a high-ranking
member of an international theft ring. They begin running jobs together. It begins small with
insurance fraud and vehicle trafficking. An outlaw reports a motorcycle is stolen. He then
files an insurance claim while Scott sells the motorcycle across the border. A double win.
Money from the insurance company, money from the sale. They do this again and again with
motorcycles and other vehicles. But tomorrow's job is different. Some of the outlaws will be
serving as security during a major drug deal, a gig arranged by Scott himself. He's revealed
that he has connections with a Mexican drug cartel. No surprise considering his line of work
and his proximity to the Mexican border. The stakes are high. If they get caught, they'll be
looking at serious jail time. And if something goes wrong during the deal, the bullets will start
flying. So, when Scott is told to meet the outlaws at their clubhouse, he's not surprised. They
probably want to go over the plan one last time. Scott arrives. The place is familiar. He's
been here countless times. He knows what's behind every door in the building except one.
Clothesline leads him to that very door. Now he realizes that something is wrong. Scott is
told to strip. They need to check him for a wire. Because of the stress of this happening, I
forget my middle name. I'm having an adrenaline dump. And for anybody who's ever had it, it
can be any traumatic experience. But I'm having auditory exclusion. So what I hear sounds
like I'm underwater. It's going whoosh whoosh. So it's slow. I need you to take all your
clothes off. It's slowing down. I'm getting time dilation in my eyes. Everything I see is in
screen grabs. Click, click, click. I can feel my heart beating through my entire body. My
hamstrings get rubbery. Now, clothesline has instructed me to take all my clothes off. Here's
what I'll tell you. If I'm not wired, it's just an embarrassing moment. I'm naked in a small crawl
space with two guys with pistols. Problem is, I'm wired to the hill. >> But they don't find
anything. Scott's recording equipment is not taped to his chest, but in his clothing. So, my
adrenaline starts settling and I'm starting to come back to normal and I think I'm done. And I
get my pants back up. I don't know if I have my boots on yet or not. And then clos line grabs
a piece of clothing that I was wearing. And that piece of clothing has a recording device in it.
And I'm watching him and he starts grabbing the clothing and he's going through it nice and
slow with his fingers. And I don't realize I do it, but I there's an audible sigh. You can hear me
go cuz I don't even know. I don't even know I'm doing it. And he looks right at it and misses
it. And uh I live to fight another day. I live to fight another day. Two moving trucks enter the
parking lot of the Brockton Holiday Inn. One is filled with drugs. The other is filled with
money. A Mexican drug cartel is selling 40 kg of cocaine and 1,000 lb of marijuana to
Canadian buyers. The Mexicans aren't taking any risks. They've arranged an American
security detail. The outlaws. Surveillance at every entrance. Four men in the parking lot
there to provide protection, unload the drugs, and count the money. Everyone is armed and
antsy. One false move and all hell could break loose. The deal is wrapped up quickly. The
transfer is complete. All the money's there. The outlaws are particularly relieved. They may
be tough, but this is their first time working with a cartel. Now they'll get paid $15,000 for their
services. Scott counts out the cash. He did it. He successfully tricked them. The cartel FBI
agents. The Canadians also FBI agents. 8 months later, a hotel in Nevada. Scott's been
laying low, coordinating his undercovers from afar. His outlaw friends think he's going
through a divorce. [music] In reality, he's been diagnosed as overassigned after experiencing
a severe stress related panic attack. He's been ordered to take a 6-month timeout. He's
been teaching during this time. His current class, ironically enough, is called undercover
stressors. All the students have gone to bed, but Scott's only just returned to his hotel room.
It's early 4 or 5:00 a.m. The drug deal back in November gave the FBI all the evidence
necessary to arrest and imprison multiple outlaw members, but the operation has continued
until today, the day of the takeown. Scott doesn't think he'll hear from any of them again, but
then his phone rings. It's Scott Town, and he's concerned. He's heard some arrests were
made, and he wanted his friend to know about it. He says he's going to take a shower and
gather more information. He'll report back. >> And the last words we spoke to each other
were, he said, "I love you, brother." And I said, "I love you, too." And that was the last words I
spoke to him. And probably about 45 minutes after that, a SWAT team hit his house and he
went to jail. >> In the end, 15 outlaws were arrested as a result of Operation Roadkill. One of
them was sentenced to 21 years in prison. Closine got 12 and a half years. Scott Town 7.
The Outlaws never saw their friend Scott Callaway again. The Ku Klux Clan emerged in the
wake of the American Civil War. From the very beginning, they were racist to the core,
[music] reigning terror and death on black Americans. In the late 19th century, they fgged,
tortured, and lynched politically active black men, raped their wives, shot their children, and
burned their schools. Historians consider them to be America's first terrorist movement.
Today, the KKK remains active, but only as a shadow of its former self. Fewer members, less
influence. However, Burning Crosses is still one of their favorite things to do, and they've
stayed true to their roots. Naturally, as a terrorist organization, they have to act in secrecy.
You might assume that infiltrating them as an FBI agent is not the easiest feat. >> So, you
may ask yourself, how do you contact the United Clans of America? Well, it turns out the
group I was looking at had a hotline. >> Scott starts talking to a guy named John Jack, a
clansman whose passion for Jack Daniels earned him this nickname. Scott tells him he's got
the number from a group of bikers he met at a gas station. It's a plausible story. Scott looks
the part and his time with the outlaws taught him how to play it. Biker gangs and white
supremacists often run in the same circles. Jack starts talking about this rally that's coming
up. Vendors, burning crosses, country music, the usual. but there's a problem. >> He said,
"I'm not going to lie to you, Scott. I had a band lined up, but the singer just got locked up,
and I really don't know what the hell I'm going to do about music." And I thought, "This could
be my end." And I said, "Did I happen to mention that I'm a musician and a singer?" I said,
"Well, I'll tell you what I'll do. I'll bring my acoustic and my PA system. When I get there, you
can come meet me by the car. I'll strum a couple of tunes for you if you think I suck." And
he's like, "Oh, hell, this is going to be great. It's going to be great." Scott doesn't know that he
just signed up for something far more sinister. April 21st, 2017. It's the day of the Kulux Clan
rally. >> I got lost multiple times until I finally drove up on this empty, I don't know, lot fenced
in in the middle of nowhere. But it wasn't hard to spot because the Nighthawks, which would
be the clan members in all black, who were the security force, are all standing at the gate
with guns. And a lot of these people were felons. Scott's ready for an interesting time. He's
been to plenty of biker gatherings, and perhaps this will be similar. During his mission, Scott
will be taught the KKK's Constitution and bylaws, studying the Black Clansman Handbook,
which he'll learn to refer to as the Claren. He'll become familiar with the original mystic
insignia of the clansmen. He'll learn this all in class with a K so that he can pass the Kuno
test, a prerequisite to getting fitted for a robe. Kuno stands for character, honor, duty. It's
getting dark and he's been invited to participate in a naturalization ceremony. He has no idea
what this means, but all the newbies are doing it. He'd stick out if he didn't. And that's how
he finds himself in the middle of a field, blindfolded, holding the shoulder of the man in front
of him, a gesture meant to signify brotherhood. They are told to raise their right hands and
repeat an oath. >> I do swear from this moment forward. >> And then they tell us to get
down on our knees >> to fostering the welfare of the white race. >> So I'm on my knees
blindfolded >> and further the work of America's greatest movement. They take my blindfold
off and there's a Clue Clust clan member in a green robe and he has this sword and he kind
of knits me. >> The United Clans of America. >> And then we all hug and there's like a little
bit of a celebration and I'm not sure what happened. And then it hits me as I'm walking to my
truck. I'm like, I think I just joined the damn clan. Yep, that's what that was. So I got
naturalized in the clue clutch clan that night. Scott's time at the KKK will end up being
relatively short-lived. The case isn't really going anywhere. And there's another group
coming into focus, a far more dangerous one. >> In the FBI, we started encountering more
violent type extremism. Not not the KKK types. We're talking advanced neo-Nazism. And it
led me to an accelerationist group called the base. The base mission will provide to be far
more extreme than anything Scott has ever seen. >> The network of violent white an
extremist group known as the base violent neo-Nazi terrorist >> paramilitary group called the
base. >> On August 11th, 2017, crowds of people marched through the campus of the
University of Virginia in Charlottesville, chanting racist and anti-semitic slogans. They were
protesting the removal of a statue of Robert E. Lee, the famous Confederate general. The
next day, they were met by counterprotesters, and things quickly turned violent. Then they
turned deadly. A white supremacist drove his car into a crowd of counterprotesters, injuring
35 people and killing Heather Hayer. For some, the Unite the Right rally was a wakeup call,
surprising proof that white supremacy persists in America. To others, it was a grim reminder
and frightening evidence that white supremacists were feeling emboldened enough to come
out of the shadows. The first accelerationist group emerged in 2015. They called themselves
Adam Buffin Division. They'd been inspired by the writings of the neo-Nazi James Mason,
whose book Siege had become a sort of Bible for accelerationists. The book denies the
Holocaust and attacks homosexuals and Jewish people. It also calls for organized violence,
specifically for the formation of terror cells prepared to wage war against the system. Initially
regarded as fringe or even cringe, accelerationism steadily gained traction. By 2021, roughly
90% of white nationalist groups identified as accelerationist. That same year, the US director
of national intelligence identified racially motivated violent extremists as the most lethal
domestic terrorism threat. More than other white supremacist ideologies, accelerationism
insists on the importance of direct violent action. The kind of action taken by the people they
call saints. Like St. Terren for Brenton Tarant, the Australian white supremacist who attacked
two mosques in Christ Church, New Zealand. He killed 51 people. Or St. Roof for Dylan
Roof who killed nine people, all black, during a church service in Charleston, South Carolina.
This is the kind of action accelerationists believe in. action that will further destabilize society
that might finally lead to societal chaos. They are explicit about this. ROF, for example, said
he'd hope to ignite a race war. Failing that, though, the purpose is to inspire more violence,
which is exactly what such attacks have done. Scott Payne just signed up on Facebook.
He's about to publish another racist post. His goal is to get banned, but nothing happens. A
fellow agent points out that he doesn't have any friends. He adds a few people and that does
it. He's promptly kicked off. Okay, well done. Next up is Gab, a social networking site well
known for its tolerant stance towards far-right users. He participates in forms with names like
whites only. This will further elevate his credentials. On July 15th, 2019, he writes an email.
>> I've been seeing your stuff and I'm definitely interested. Survival and self-defense. I like it.
>> The next day, a ping. >> Thanks for contacting the base. You can learn more about us on
our official Gab account at the base. If you're interested in joining, please provide the
following info to begin the vetting process. The base is a white supremacist neo-Nazi group.
They were just founded a year ago, and they are accelerationists through and through. Their
plan entails assassinations, sabotage, and acts of terrorism. Their targets are black people,
Jewish people, and anyone they consider traitors to the white race. >> They want to do
guerrilla warfare tactics. So, it's murdering people and disappearing. It's poisoning a water
system, taking down a power grid, derailing the train, anything that cause chaos. >> The
idea is that after the collapse, the group cells scattered across the world will form white
ethnostates led by white supremacists. This event, Total Societal Collapse, has a special
name, the Bugaloo. Now Scott is trying to join them. They ask for his name, White Warrior
88, and his age, 44. Scott Payne is actually 48, but he knows most base members are
between 18 and 25. He wants to seem as young as possible. Sex, race, location, military
experience, fitness level, special training, and organization affiliations. Here, his past
undercover experiences pay off. He mentions the clan and biker gangs. So, here I am
approximately for a week or more. I'm emailing back and forth to somebody with a Proton
email account and they're asking me all kinds of questions about my ethnicity, what I can
bring to the table, what is my history, and I laid out a story that I was a old biker, shocker,
and a former skin head from South Carolina. >> As Scott would find out later, the owner of
that email account was none other than the founder of the base himself. online. He's known
as Norman Spear and Roman Wolf. He's been on the public's radar since 2018, but his true
identity is unknown. That is unless you're in the FBI. Ronaldo Nazaro is 45, American, born
in New Jersey. He'd worked as a contractor in Iraq for the Department of Justice. Now he's in
Russia, but is 2019. You can organize neo-Nazis into a network of accelerationist insurgents
from just about anywhere. The email exchange continues for less than a week. Then Scott is
invited for a phone interview. It's supposed to take 30 minutes but ends up lasting an hour.
Now both Scott and the base have a 24-hour grace period. After that, Scott will need to
make the decision. Does he truly want to join? >> I pass the test and they bring me in. And
they asked me, "Hey, where are you located?" And I said, "In East Tennessee." And they
said, "The closest sale to you is in North Georgia." >> That's where Scott will have to pass
one final test, an in-person vetting session. August 2, 2019, Rome, Georgia. To Scott, the
men look more like boys. He knows that one of them is the leader of the base's Rome cell,
but that's it. They tell him to step out of his truck. Scott isn't wearing a wire. He knows they'll
check. But hidden in his truck is a tracking device put there by his case team. As long as
Scott is near his truck, his team will be able to find him. I step out um you know shake hands
or whatever and he says, "Hey, I need you to put your phone in airplane mode." And I said,
"Okay." He pulls out this wand thing that I'd never seen before. It looked like a geer counter.
It had a big triangle card in it, lights all over it. He wands me and I pass cuz I'm fine. I don't
have anything. Then he starts wanding my truck. No big deal until he starts going to the back
driver's side of my truck, which is where the case team placed my tracker. That thing he's
holding his hand starts going crazy. The closer he gets to the back of the truck, it starts
beeping, beeping, beeping, beeping, beeping, beeping. I see colors going on it. I'm like, "Oh
no, man. It's picking up the tractor." >> Scott braces for a fight. He's alone. His team knows
where he is, but they have no idea something is wrong. But he gets lucky. The other guy
wonders if the device is picking up the power lines >> and he walks over and it goes crazy
and he's like, "Damn it." Yeah. Whatever. He says, "Yeah, it's the power lines. Hey, follow us
to another location." >> Scott has to act fast. He has to get the tracker deactivated. >> And
I'm calling the case team and I'm like, "Hey, you need to shut that tracker off." And at first
they're like, "Well, we can't shut it off." And I'm like, "You have to shut it off." And they're like,
"Well, if we shut it off, we're not sure. What if we can't get it back on and we lose you?" I
said, "Here's what I'm telling you. Whatever they have is picking up the tracker. If you don't
shut it off, this is going to be a very fast undercover cuz it's going to be over as soon as we
get to where we're going." >> They arrive at an abandoned concrete plant. >> And I'm
thinking to myself, "Oh, this is great. How many movies have I seen where somebody's killed
in an abandoned concrete plant? I hope they got the tracker off. They pull out the wand.
They won me and I I passed. >> Scott is in. By this point, Scott's been around the block, the
Outlaws, the Kulux Clan, but nothing could prepare him for what comes next. Scott has been
with the base for over 2 months now. As a boy, he loved camping with his parents and
friends. He'd explore the woods, go fishing, but the camping trip he's just been invited to isn't
like the ones he used to go on. The list of things to bring contains some unusual items,
weapons, ammunition, and the same kind of camouflage. Flect tarn worn by the German
military. This is no ordinary camping trip. This is a hay camp, an extended training session to
prepare members for the bugaloo. Hand-to- hand combat, weapons drills, grappling. By
[snorts] now, Scott has attended a number of similar training sessions, but this one is
different. It's longer, 3 to 4 days, and it's bigger with base members coming in from around
the country, Texas, Alabama, Michigan, Delaware. He's familiar with many of the men he'll
be camping with. At least he knows most of their online pseudonyms. Can't go back, is
Punish Snake, Dimma, Big Siege, Zumnat, all from out of state. And of course, he knows his
fellow Georgia cell members, Helter Skelter, and Pestilence, who vetted Scott back in
August with the cell leader himself. TMBB, the militant Buddhist. Everyone knows Scott by
his code name, Pill Horse. When you're an undercover agent, some cliches are true. Scott
has learned to expect the unexpected. Yet, he fails to expect what would happen at the
Halloween hate camp. I wake up to a pounding on my window. Pale horse, pale horse, you
got to wake up. You got away. I'm like, "What's up, man? What's going on?" They're like,
"Hey, you got to get out here and see this." I've been doing undercover since 1996 at this
point. And I have never been with a group of people where I had to burn Bibles, burn
American flags. [music] I damn sure wasn't part of a group that went out and stole a goat
and we sacrificed it at a pagan ritual and drank its blood. And I did all that in 3 days with
these guys. >> After they decapitated the goat, the group comes together for a barbecue.
They roast the goat over an open fire and have it for dinner. All of this, of course, while
tripping balls. It's impossible to know what blossomed in their brains that night, what
hallucinatory horrors they saw. If their drug field fantasies were anything like their sober
ones, then they dreamed of death and destruction, of killing black Americans, Jews,
anti-fascists, and communists, of the bugaloo. Scott has become upsettingly familiar with
these fantasies and with the beliefs that produce them. Behind each pseudonym is a young
man, and within each young man is a darkness. The militant Buddhist real name is Luke
Lane. If the bugaloo requires it, he says he could kill his dad. Pestilence is Jacob Codly. He
believes Hitler is still alive. Michael Helterbrand, aka Helter Skelter, says he'd have no
problem killing a commie kid. Punish Snake, a former Canadian soldier who'd been doxed by
an undercover journalist, gets emotional talking about it, but he knows he'll have to kill his
ex- fiance when the Bugaloo kicks off. She's half black. Scott Payne records all of this and
as he earns their trust, he records more. >> And we did more and more trainings through
that Saturday. But by that Saturday night, we went back down to the holy site and had a
bonfire. And that's where the American flags were burned. That's where holy Bibles were set
on fire and everybody's screaming, "Death to your, you know, f your Jewish God. Death to
America." And when that training camp ended, that's when I advanced even more in them
trusting me. And that's when TMBB and Pestilence started bringing me in on murder plots
that they had. >> It's more than 2 months later and Scott is back at TMBB's farm, the 100
acre property where the Halloween hate camp took place. For the last few weeks, TMBB has
been talking about another camping trip, but he's been ky. He doesn't want to share
information via chat. Scott has convinced him to meet. He wants details. It turns out the
camping trip isn't a camping trip. It's a hit job. >> PMBB creates a separate chat room called
the camping trip. And when he was saying we're going on a camping trip, what he was
saying is we're going to kill somebody. >> Their target is an active Antifa couple in the
Georgia area. >> It was going to be me, TMBB, Pestilence, and Helter Skelter. and we were
all going to make entry into the house. TMBB wanted me to go with him to kill everybody
while Helter Skelter would be covering out the window to make sure no cops were coming
and stuff like that or help. And then Peslence was going to set the house on fire. But in the
planning of everything, at one point Helter Skelter says, "Hey, if you don't mind, I'd like to
pop my cherry on this one." That confused me cuz it means something completely different
to me. And I'm like, "What do you mean?" and he said, "I would like to actually put a bullet in
somebody's head as well." >> After casing the house, they begin the next phase of the
murder plot planning. >> It was pretty extensive. Like you go to a camping site, we leave
everything digital, everything, phones, everything. There we go scrub ourselves at a pay by
the hour motel. We tape our pants to our shoes, our gloves to our shirts. um Vaseline on
eyebrows and facial hair. So, this is all to avoid leaving DNA um for law enforcement. At one
point, TMBB had done research and he said that he read that the first time somebody kills
somebody, they lose control of their Bibles. So, he was suggesting that we all wear adult
diapers. I didn't tell him that I'd killed somebody before, but I told him I think I'm okay. I don't
need any diapers. I was just as shocked when I got brought in on this murder plot as most
people were. But while this is going on, the Baltimore sale, which is can't go back in Eisen
and [music] Punish Snake, are planning to go to this Second Amendment gun rights rally in
Virginia that they thought was going to be the kickoff of the Bugaloo and the D-Day, the race
war. Their idea was they knew you're going to have a bunch of second amendment people
there, militias, 3enters, you're going to have cops, you're going to have protesters. What if
you pop a couple of rounds into that crowd? Nobody know who's shooting at who and
everybody starts shooting each other. That could be the set off. >> Scott and his team know
they have to stop him and there's no time to lose. The Pro Firearms Rally is on January 20th,
2020, just a few months away. They jump into action. The next weeks are a flurry of activity,
meeting, coordinating, and planning. Finally, the day of the bus arrives. >> It's a [music]
Wednesday and I'm in Rome, Georgia. I pick up Luke, who's TMBB, to go to lunch and we
pull out and as I'm driving down the road, I knew what my ruse was going to be. I was going
to say something was wrong with the truck, but sure as you know what, the truck made
some loud sound I've never heard. I didn't hit anything. Something just went and I was like,
"Did you hear that?" He's like, "Yeah." And I go, "Man, if my if my brake calipers are frozen
again, I'm going to be cuz that did happen." So, I took a left out of his neighborhood
pre-planned by the SWAT team. And I pull up tight to a fence. And as I go, "Hey, I'm going to
get out and check the truck." So, I'm walking around the back of the truck. Another vehicle
pulls up. He doesn't know who they are. I know who they are. They're part of the case team.
And the guy says, "Hey, man. You need any help with that?" And I look up and I'm like, "Oh
my gosh, I can't believe it's you. What are you doing in Rome, Georgia?" He goes, "What are
you doing here?" I was like, "Man, I haven't seen you." And and as I'm doing that, there's the
distraction. Here comes a Bearcat with a SWAT team over the hill barreling down the hill. But
Luke's looking at me, not at the car coming. And when that thing is coming, I jump in the
back of the agent's truck and I'm like, "Go, go, go." And you could hear the SWAT team
giving commands. And and luckily, the arrest went down without an incident. The next
morning, SWAT teams arrested at K can't go back and punish Snake. >> Essentially, we kind
of we kind of tore down the base. Luke Lane, aka TMBB, was sentenced to 6 years in
prison. Jacob Carterly, pestilence got 13. William Bilbro is five. Patrick Matthews, Punish
Snake, and Brian Lemley, can't go back 9 years. According to a recent Guardian article, the
base is enjoying a resurgence. Its founder, Ronaldo Nazaro, continues to live in St.
Petersburg. Scott retired in June 2021. At his retirement ceremony attended by friends,
family, colleagues, and top FBI brass, June 30th was named Scott Payne Day.

The Evil Design of Japan's Death Penalty​

[Music] today most of the developed world has ended the death penalty but in 2024 there
are still two countries in the oecd that use it the United States of America and Japan but
while the US has been transparent about its ultimate punishment Japan has kept its
practices
secret for years it was only in 2010 that the world was finally shown the evil design of
Japan's death penalty July 26 2022 Tomy her oato is sitting in a Cell in the Tokyo Detention
Center 14 years ago he killed seven people and injured 10 in 2011 tomato was sentenced to
death every day he wakes up at 7:00 a.m. and heads to bed at 9:00 p.m. in a Cell that's the
size of about four tatami mats he has a sink a commode bedding and a small desk in Japan
death row inmates can wait decades for an execution but unlike the US they wait for a day
they never really know is coming any random morning the inmate can be taken to the
execution chamber they're given no more than a few hours notice the Japanese state says
that this helps with emotional stability that it reduces the chances of an inmate taking life
some argue it's Justice their victims weren't given notice either others say it's inhumane for
34 years a man named Menda Saka didn't know which day would be his last in 1983 he was
freed the police officer who arrested him revealed that he had concealed sakai's Alibi that

proved he was innocent 12,410 mornings with an unjustified fear for execution in 2014 iwa
hakamada was also released and given a retrial due to possibly falsified evidence he was
the
longest serving death row inmate on the planet kamada spent more than 45 years in prison
waiting in the Tokyo Detention Center Kato sits in his cell he's surrounded by objects
purposely made rounder so that he can't finish off his sentence earlier than expected on July
26th 2022 after 14 years of waiting he hears more noises than usual outside of his door
today the majority of the developed world has outlawed the death penalty but Japan is
strange this book explains why even though it's still legal in the US it's debatable the United
States is a federal divided country many states have phased out the death penalty entirely
Japan on the other hand is a centralized state where polls have shown that the public
supports it with a clear majority the US's death penalty is intimately connected with its
history of racial discrimination and enslavement Japan is ethnically homogeneous and has
less inequality the fall of an authoritarian leader like Hitler melini Salazar and Franco all led
to the abolition of the death penalty in their respective countries Japan's authoritarian State
also fell but the death penalty remained in Austria Great Britain and France the election of a
left-wing government all led to the abolition of capital punishment in 2009 Japan elected the
center left democ atic party of Japan the death penalty stayed but what makes Japan's
situation even stranger is how uniquely brutal it is its homicide rate is a fraction of that found
in the US and it's lower than all the European countries which have abolish the death penalty
nevertheless the percentage of murder offenders sentenced to death in Japan and the US
are
around the same in 2018 15 Japanese prisoners were killed with about6 16 inmates on
death
row that's 10 less than the US is 25 which had more than 10 times the amount of inmates on
death row seven of the 15 executions were part of the AUM shrio doomsday cult the
Japanese State sometimes executes in batches all seven were killed on the same morning
while the US explicitly treats the death penalty differently from other criminal sentencing in
Japan it's treated like other criminal punishments to be put the death in the US you must go
through a b furic trial system there is a criminal trial for determining guilt or innocence which
requires unanimity after if determined to be guilty it goes to another trial for deciding the
punishment here you must receive again a unanimous agreement from the jury then the
judge can serve you the death penalty Florida and Alabama are the only exceptions but
these
two states are outliers in the US context and they still require a super majority in Japan it's
different under the cin system citizens act like judges they sit alongside professional ones to
determine both the verdict and the sentence of a crime all that is required for the death
penalty is a majority in theory five judges on the panel can believe the defendant is guilty
and
deserves the death penalty while the other four could believe the defendant is innocent and
deserves no punishment whatsoever with this close of a vote the defendant can be
sentenced to death in Japan there are seven detention centers that execute the death
penalty

it's the Justice Minister who decides when it will take place 5 days after he or she signs the
warrant The Prisoner is put to death these are usually signed right before political recess
moments where media coverage is limited the executions are not made clear to the family
members and lawyers of the inmates they only learn after it's taken place Kato is brought
into a prayer room here he is read his last rights by a spiritual adviser he is given time to
write a will and maybe to consume some snacks or even smoke a cigarette afterwards he's
taken into another small room with an altar if they're Buddhist it will be a figure of the
Buddha if they're one of the few Christians in the country a crucifix in this room the execution
order is officially read out by the prison Warden the last thing Kato sees are the blue curtains

going to want that incline to be as gentle as possible otherwise the job is too intense and
workers will start dropping like flies the remains of the workers suggest most were in decent
but not spectacular health these were everyday people not super elite athletes many died
before 40 due to the incredibly hard work engineers calculated 8% is the steepest incline for
average workers to complete their task in consequence the ramp has to become longer to
build a ramp to the full 147 m height of the pyramid at a gentle enough incline this ramp
would need to be very very long like way more than a kilometer it would require a few
million tons of material up to three times as much volume as the entire pyramid remains of
such an enormous ramp haven't been found and it would take thousands of workers
decades
just to build it decades Kufu doesn't have to spare there is a way to keep the ramp shorter
you could build a corkcrew ramp that spirals around the sides like a road winding up a
mountain every time the pyramid grows the ramp grows with it and eventually just becomes
part of the pyramid itself that would be a pretty ingenious way to save up on space and
material and it would explain why we haven't found any remains of a ramp but it comes with
a whole new set of problems the pyramid's triangular faces need to be accurately maintained
at precisely 51.9° from the bottom to the top surveyors need to measure the edges
constantly to ensure there's no deviation if you're off by even a few centimeters at the bottom
the top could be off by several meters since the spiral ramp blocks your sight it's almost
impossible to ensure that all the lines of the pyramid are actually straight which would leave
you with a crooked pyramid at the end and as we know the Great Pyramid is in fact not
crooked this brings us to theory number two it's the late 90s a French engineer Enri Odon is
watching a documentary about the pyramids it explains the pyramid construction with the
external ramp theory but Enri is skeptical to his engineering mind it just doesn't make sense
he calls up his architect's son Jean-Pierre Odon and asks his opinion jeierre is intrigued
without knowing much about ancient Egypt at all or even visiting the pyramid he starts
puzzling over other ways the blocks could have been lifted he labors over it obsessively for
years until he's finally ready to share it with Egyptologists most of them ignore him he's an
outsider and it's a field notorious for gatekeeping a French guy who knows nothing because

there's no evidence but his theory has since gained traction because Odon has put himself
into the shoes of Emmyu thinking through every last detail his theory could even explain how
the heaviest granite beams might have been moved without needing to be hauled by 600
workers here's a concise version and the Unu does use an external ramp for the first part of
the pyramid up to around 60 m but he doesn't just build a basic ramp made of rubble no his
ramp is made of limestone the limestone blocks that will later compose the upper layers of
the pyramid that would explain why we haven't found any remains of a ramp around the
pyramid they're right there in front of us the short external ramp is used to build the widest
lower levels of the pyramid it's also used to haul the heavy granite beams that compose the
king's chamber but hundreds of workers hauling a 50-ton block in a small space is logistically
challenging so Adon believes Emmy Unu used the long 46 m corridor the Grand Gallery as
an
ingenious counterweight system it would have been built opposite the external ramp and its
size and slope would be leveraged with counterweights that would assist workers in getting
the granite up to the king's chamber the Grand Gallery is a weird space in the Great Pyramid
it is details that puzzled archaeologists for a long time like why it's so tall so narrow and why
it has stone benches running along the inside odon believes the Grand Gallery helps move
impossibly heavy stones by functioning like a railroad track the stone benches are actually
the rails for carts on wooden rollers remember no wheels essentially a huge granite block at
the bottom of the external ramp would be attached with rope to a trolley car loaded up with
heavy blocks at the top of the Grand Gallery when the trolley cars rolled down the Grand
Gallery the heavy granite block would be pulled up the ramp there's even evidence of
scuffing from the repeated impact of something heavy in the Grand Gallery so it's a possible
explanation of what this unique corridor was used for once the heavy granite beams are in
place the external ramp has served its purpose now the pyramid is too tall for it to be
practical so the builders switch things up they dismantle the external ramp and use its blocks
to start building the rest of the pyramid from the inside out with an internal ramp kind of like
the driveway spiraling up inside a parking garage this second ramp would have been built
from the bottom up with an incline of about 7% it would go straight up until it hits one of the
pyramid sides where it would make a sharp left continue up another side at the same incline
the ramp continues zigzagging up the pyramid with the flights of the ramp getting shorter as
the pyramid narrows from the bottom to the top the internal ramp is over a kilometer long
moving heavy blocks up an incline is manageable especially if you're using a sled over
smooth limestone but each time the ramp turns a corner the workers have the enormously
difficult task of pivoting the heavy stones odong calculates the ramp had to be less than 3 m
wide and the workers would have needed somewhere to stand to turn the block so he
proposes that at the end of each flight of the ramp there must have been a big space left
open for the workers to turn the block possibly with the help of wooden levers or cranes the

empty spaces would also be a nice place for the workers to catch their breath there's
actually
evidence of one of these spaces there's a previously unexplained notch that corresponds to
Odon's predictions for what the spaces would look like about 83 meters up the pyramid
odon's theories about the Grand Gallery and the internal ramp offer viable solutions to two
of the pyramids biggest mysteries how two-ton blocks were lifted so high and how 50 ton
beams were moved without the space for the hundreds of workers needed to haul them but
if he's right the ramp's design would have been highly complex its path would have to be
designed with great care to avoid intersecting with any passageways or chambers within the
pyramid critics of his theory are either unconvinced that its construction is supported by
archeological evidence or wave off the internal ramp as over complicated many suggest the
external ramp theory is likelier because it's simpler but ancient Egyptian workmanship
exhibits extraordinarily high levels of precision in so many aspects why not also apply this
ability to a highly sophisticated ramp design and also why not entertain an even more
sophisticated theory for how they built the pyramids in 2024 a flurry of newspaper articles
announced that the mystery of the pyramids was finally solved thanks to brand new
archeological evidence as it turns out the Nile might just be the key to the mystery of how the
pyramids were built nowadays the Giza Plateau lies in an arid strip of the Sahara Desert
kilome away from the lush banks of the Nile but during the time that the pyramids were built
the landscape may have looked very different a 2024 study combined radar satellite imagery
with deep soil cing techniques this way it identified what appears to be a long-lost branch of
the Nile flowing alongside the majority of the pyramids the pyramid builders probably used
this branch to move heavy stones straight to the pyramid base instead of dragging them all
the way from distant quaries more than plausible that the builders use the Niles to transport
the blocks horizontally but what about vertically another peer-reviewed study from 2024
offers a fascinating theory it proposes a radical and controversial idea the ancient Egyptians
might have used hydraulic power to raise heavy stones in other words a water powered
elevator the idea of such an elevator is not new but for a long time credentialed
Egyptologists considered such theories fringe and unscientific just speculations cooked up
by
pyramidians they might sound cool but there was zero evidence to actually support them
until perhaps now the researchers including hydraologists mechanical engineers and
geographers found evidence that the earliest Egyptian pyramid could have been built using a
floating wooden elevator capable of raising heavy stones with far less human labor the water
elevator would have worked something like this rainfall and flood water would be collected
into a nearby structure that functions as a dam a system of underground conduits guides
that
water into a shaft running from underneath the pyramid up through its central axis kind of
like a volcano this internal shaft is where all the upward movement is generated within the
shaft floating on the water surface is a heavy wooden platform which workers would load up

with heavy stones from the ground level then they'd open and close valves near the bottom
of the shaft which would feed in or drain out the water manipulating the water levels in this
way would raise and lower the wooden platform like an elevator they could raise the
platform to heights of at least 17 m then workers would unload the stones and construct the
pyramid from the inside out the study's lead author claims his theories could also help
explain why later ones aren't as large as the Great Pyramid as the climate dried out of the
region over time builders couldn't have captured enough water for a hydraulic lift system
they'd have to rely on human strength to lift heavy stones so does this theory hold water
experts are mostly skeptical zahihawas a leading figure in Egyptology says the theory is
completely wrong the pyramid in the study is not only smaller than Kufu's Great Pyramid but
differs structurally and was built of far lighter stones so if Kufu's pyramid were built with
some kind of water elevator it would have to be bigger and perhaps more complex so far no
comparable shaft is known to exist in the Great Pyramid ramps however are found all over
archeological excavations of ancient Egypt so the most common theories continue to put
forward some sort of ramp as the dominant construction model there are other potentially
viable scientific theories that try to solve pieces of this puzzle one expert we spoke with
suggest multiple smaller ramps from all sides to cut down on construction time but to this
day there's still no generally accepted theory for how they did it in any case it's good to be
wary of all the claims coming out about finally solving the mystery everyone wants to be the
one to definitively figure it out the Great Pyramid is the last of the seven wonders of the
world we have left it's so old even Cleopatra considered it ancient but even though they've
been around thousands of years it's actually very strange we haven't found any blueprints for
the pyramids the ancient Egyptians were obsessive we have their tax records their love
poems their receipts for donkey feed purchases from 4,000 years ago but papyrie with plans
for the pyramids have never been found whether the plans were lost hidden or intentionally
destroyed we don't know but what we do know and what science might be at the brink of

Online he is only known under a pseudonym: Alpha02 He is a multi-millionaire, lives a
luxurious life and drives expensive cars. He feels safe in Thailand. Suddenly, he hears a
loud
bang in front of his house. A woman crashed her Toyota Camry into his front gate. He leaves
everything behind and runs out of his house to the scene of the accident. A mistake with
serious consequences. The driver is an agent of the Royal Thai Police force. FBI and DEA
investigators have been waiting for this moment for months. Authorities from seven countries
have worked relentlessly towards this day. Will the hunt for the king of the dark web finally
come to an end? The Wired journalist Andy Greenberg has published the story on the hunt
for the Darknet kingpin in a multi-part series. Additionally, there's a phenomenal Darknet

find both links in the description. It's the early 2010s. The dark web is picking up speed. The
promises of anonymity and privacy are attracting more and more people. Thanks to Bitcoin,
there is a new form of payment that isn't controlled by authorities. It's become easier than
ever for criminals to sell their products online at a massive scale. With the advent of the dark
web, the gigantic global game of cat and mouse began and it continues to this day. The Silk
Road is perhaps the most legendary dark web marketplace to date. The platform went live in
February 2011 and became incredibly popular. More than 100,000 customers bought drugs
there, but only 2.5 years later, the operator of the site was caught and the Silk Road went
offline. The authorities wanted to set an example in the fight against drugs. The Silk Road
founder received a life sentence. But the business was too lucrative to drive away other
operators. So after the closure of the Silk Road, the number of darknet markets exploded.
They all fought for the top spot. Silk Road 2.0 was released just 35 days after the closure of
its predecessor. The site survived less than a year. Evolution was another popular
marketplace with a comparable size to the two Silk Roads. To buy things on evolution, you
had to pay Bitcoin to an account on the platform, a kind of dark web escrow account. And
once the items arrived to the customers, the sellers were paid. There was an incredible

amount of money with the platform operators at all times. At some point, these operators
decided to steal this money, a so-called exit scam. Agora has also been named as a worthy
successor to the original Silk Road. But the founders voluntarily took the site offline in
August 2015. Business was getting too hot. Exit scams, arrests, voluntary withdrawals and
hacks. All of these were benefiting a new emerging dark web market: AlphaBay. In July
2014,
a man who calls himself "Alpha02" starts to develop AlphaBay. Only five months later, his
platform goes live. Initially, only stolen credit card data is offered and sold, but AlphaBay
quickly begins to offer more lucrative products. In addition to data and logins, there are now
drugs, weapons and malware. Services such as money laundering are also offered. Few
things are forbidden. But items or data related to child abuse hit-and-runs and stolen bank
account information from Russia is strictly prohibited. AlphaO2 probably doesn't want to
mess with Russian law enforcement agencies. Maybe he also wants to pretend to be
Russian
in order to mislead investigators. The website itself works similar to Amazon. It is
user-friendly, there are search functions, filters and categories You are able to pay with
Bitcoin, Monero or Ethereum. This is supposed to provide anonymity. AlphaBay even offers
a
so-called tumbler, purchases are blurred by bundling multiple transactions from different
people. The platform works well and dominates the dark web. While other marketplaces
popped up and disappeared. AlphaBay remains strong. The number of users is growing
rapidly. Barely a year after it was founded, the site has more than 200,000 registered users
and 40,000 sellers. In 2017 AlphaBay has over 300,000 items on their website and over half
a million dollars in sales every day. AlphaO2 is making money with every single transaction
receiving a share between 2 to 4%. He becomes a multimillionaire. Right now, an entire
team
is working on AlphaBay. Alpha02 has a representative named "DeSnake", several
moderators
who handle disputes between buyers and sellers and a PR manager. With the site's
explosive success the founder decides to retire from day-to-day operations. He renames
himself. "Alpha02" simply becomes "Admin" From now on, communication only runs through
“DeSnake”. As AlphaO2 retreats, American investigators are paying more and more
attention
to his true identity. Who is the powerful mastermind behind the platform ruling the dark side
of the Internet? A hunt that stretches across the globe and will last for more than several

sellers are located. Because of that, the American investigators had to try a different way.
They start browsing the platform and buy drugs anonymously, hoping for any mistakes by
the sellers. Perhaps the product's packaging or postage stamps can provide clues to the
identity of the respective drug dealer. Then they could arrest him. But these are just the
small
fish. Dealers come and go. Investigators want Alpha02. But the mastermind behind
AlphaBay seems to take every precaution. He seems to know every rule of the game. So the
investigators become desperate until December 2016. Robert Miller sits behind his desk in
Fresno, California. He works for the DEA, the American Drug Law Enforcement Agency.
He's
working on AlphaBay. And until this day, it was a pretty thankless job. But suddenly, an email
appears in his inbox. The sender is anonymous. It seems like AlphaO2 made a fatal mistake
in
the early days of AlphaBay. Every user who registered on the website at the time received a
welcome email. The email address of the true sender was visible in the metadata of this
email. Although the error was immediately corrected, the anonymous tipster saved one of
those first welcome emails. Maybe the tipster was one of Alpha02's first customers, maybe
an operator of a competing site that got a hold of the mail somehow. Who knows? Anyway,
he silently watched AlphaBay growing on the dark web, only to then hand the mail address
over to the DEA. The email address is... pimp... pimp_alex_91@[Link] This email was
the breakthrough for Millar and his colleagues Via the email address, the investigators find
photos from 2008 and 2009 of an "Alex" on [Link] That's a French-language social
media platform. He also linked an old dating profile. The profile lists Trois-Rivières as his
hometown. It is located in southern Quebec, Canada. According to the profile, he was 17
years old at the time. So the 91 in his email address could be the year he was born. He
would
have been 23 years old when AlphaBay was founded. The username "Alpha02" also
appears
on a French-language technology forum. In 2008 he explained how to remove a virus from
an
image. His email address is at the bottom of the post and also his full name. Alexandre
Cazes. The investigators have his name, but where is he? They find Caze's PayPal account.
He
provided his private email address there as well. Through his LinkedIn profile, they also find
out that he works as a freelance software designer. He also seems to run his own tech
company called EBX Technologies. On Facebook the investigators find the profile of his

fiancee, a Thai woman. Apparently, the Canadian lives in Thailand. The clues lead
investigators to the country's capital, Bangkok. With the help of Thai authorities, the
investigative team identifies three properties owned by Cazes in the city. One house is
located in a gated community. Alpha02 lives there with his wife. Then there's a second
house
and a 3 million worth mansion in the outskirts of Bangkok. He also has a holiday home in
Phuket and is in the process of buying another villa in Cyprus. Investigators begin tailing
him.
The lifestyle of the multi-millionaire, includes several cars. Cazes enjoys driving around
Bangkok in his Lamborghini. Agents watch him, follow his routes and track his iPhone.
Whereas Cazes lives in a beautiful house of his wife, He invites his many affairs to one of his
other houses in Bangkok. The investigators called that place the "Bachelor Pad". Cazes is
an
active member of a pickup artist forum. There, men give each other advice on how to be
successful with women. Under the name Rawmeo Cazes publishes conservative family
values and keeps a quasi-sexist live blog about his "successful" sex life. Other than that, his
everyday life is quite normal. Pretty unspectacular for the King of the dark web. He gets up
early, checks his social media accounts, works and is home a lot. From time to time, he
attends a language course or goes out to eat with his wife. Around these routines, the
authorities meticulously plan his arrest. In June 2017, a few weeks before the attack, a few
American agents were sitting in the lounge of the 5-star Athenee Hotel in Bangkok.
Suddenly Cazes appears. He parks his Porsche Panamera at the entrance and casually
strolls
through the lobby area straight towards the agents. There are thousands of hotels in
Bangkok. Are they busted? Has the king of the dark web outwitted them? Cazes sits at a
table a few meters away from the agents. They have never been so close to him. But he only
meets for a business dinner. An incredible coincidence. At this point, no one suspects that
just
one month later, Cazes will be dead. AlphaBay is the largest darknet market in the world at
this time. But there is competition. In Europe, the Hansa Market is growing rapidly, keeping
European authorities busy. Dutch investigators find the servers of the Hansa Market thanks
to a tip from a security researcher. They're located in a data center in the Netherlands.
Unique
opportunity arises. They monitor the servers, copy the data and dig through countless chat
entries from the operators of the site. They find out that the operators are Germans, who
probably still live in Germany. Together with the German Federal Criminal Police ("BKA"), the
Dutch want to bring the Hansa Market under their control. But suddenly the Hansa Market
disappears from the Dutch servers. The admins probably found out that their servers had
been copied. In the chats of the operators the authorities also find a few Bitcoin addresses.
They start tracking the transactions of these bitcoin wallets until they end up at a Dutch
crypto exchange. They contact the exchange and ask for the data. The bitcoins lead to
Lithuania. Together with the authorities there, the Germans and the Dutch try and locate the
new servers. This time the authorities want to strike. But something unexpected happens.

The FBI tells European authorities about their plans to arrest AlphaO2 and to shut down
AlphaBay. "Operation Bayonet" is born. The operation is led by the FBI and DEA and
involves
the cooperation of law enforcement agencies from a total of 7 countries. Europol is also
involved. The FBI is instructed to wait with the takedown of AlphaBay until the Dutch in
cooperation with the Germans have taken control of the Hansa Market. If AlphaBay is taken
down, Hansa would be swamped with new buyers and sellers. This is often the case in the
dark web when a site closes or if there's an exit scam, customers and dealers simply move.
But this time, customers and dealers would move to a site that's been hijacked by law
enforcement. With that data, the Dutch could convict thousands of unsuspecting criminals. A
honeypot. Alexander Cazes knows nothing. He continues to drive through Bangkok in his
Lamborghini, writes nonsense in his favorite forum and cheats on his wife. On June 20th,
2017, the first part of the mission succeeds. The data center in Lithuania is stormed by
Dutch
forces. At the same time, German authorities arrest the two operators of the Hansa Market in
Siegen and Cologne. The operators cannot warn anyone before their arrest. The Hansa
Market is under Dutch control and nobody in the dark web knows about it. July 5th, 2017,
Bangkok. It’s time. There's a warrant for Cazes. Today, the Royal Thai Police, DEA and FBI
will arrest him. Alpha02 could finally be put down after more than 2 years. A gray Toyota
Camry drives down a dead-end road towards Cazes house with the Royal Thai Police force
agent at the wheel. She tells the security guard that she took a wrong turn. She wants to
turn around, but "unintentionally" causes a minor accident. The noise and chaos are
supposed to lure Cazes out of his house. He's supposed to come out spontaneously without
thinking about it. This part is important: In the optimal case, his devices should stay unlocked
when he is getting arrested. If his hard drives were locked and encrypted, it would be difficult
for authorities to access AlphaBay. Cazes leaves his house and approaches the Toyota. He
has a cell phone on him. Suddenly, several officers try to catch Cazes. He attempts to run
back inside, possibly to shut down his computer. But he's overpowered. The investigators
run
into his house and look for his laptop. It's in the bedroom on and not on Stand by. The
officials have caught him. Alpha02 is still logged into the server hosting AlphaBay.
Investigators searched the laptop and find multiple passwords for the AlphaBay website and
servers. The Canadian had a fortune of $23 million. Authorities confiscated his luxury cars,
houses a hotel and millions in cryptocurrency. Cazes wife is charged. The Thai woman is
accused of money laundering. [Trigger Warning Suicide - Skip Forward 20 Seconds] 1 week
later, on July 12. Alexander Cazes is dead. He committed suicide while in custody. The King
of
the Dark Web is history. The shutdown of AlphaBay by authorities is being purposely kept
secret for the time being when the platform is suddenly offline, no one knows why. An exit
scam? A hack? Have the operators retired? As expected, countless users migrate to the
other
Darknet platforms, including the Hansa Market. For four weeks, the Dutch authorities

watched thousands of criminals trade on the platform. They collect valuable incriminating
evidence. So on July 20th, 2017, the Hansa Market is shut down as well. On the same day,
the US Department of Justice announces the end of AlphaBay and Hansa, a gigantic
success
for the global authorities. The dark web itself is not an evil technology just for criminals. We
need places on the Internet in which whistleblowers and journalists are relatively safe.
Marketplaces like AlphaBay or however still part of the picture. The global game of
cat-and-mouse is far from over. The demand for illegal drugs, weapons, counterfeit money
and malware is too high. It didn't take long for the Hansa Market and AlphaBay to be
forgotten. Users flocked to other existing platforms. A number of new Darknet markets
sprouted up and positioned themselves better than the former market leaders. The Russian
Darknet market Hydra was at times more than twice the size of AlphaBay. In 2021, it was
also shut down by German and American authorities. So now there's a new contest for the
title of the King of the Dark Web. A promising contender is the "DeSnake". He relaunched
AlphaBay in 2021 and still runs the darknet marketplace to this day.

The Hunt for El Chapo

This is the most heavily guarded prison in Mexico. Tall mesh fences, huge watchtowers. The
area is a no-fly zone. This prison is considered to be unescapable. Yet today, someone will
escape. This someone happens to be the world's most powerful drug lord, El Chapo. He
won't use any violence, nor will he climb over the fence. All he will do is walk into his shower
and disappear. This is the story of how El Chapo became one of the most successful drug
dealers in the history of mankind. How he was hunted by authorities for decades and how he
escaped them over and over again. And it's the story of how an interview with a Hollywood
actor and a failing car engine finally brought him down. Confirmed. Hainqain Archead
Guzman Loera was born on April 4th, 1957 in a poor family in a poor neighborhood, the
village Latuna in Mexico Sierra Madre Mountains. Boys here don't grow up wishing to be
astronauts, firefighters, or doctors. They want to become drug traffickers. It's a way to make
money, and money is a way out. People will call Guzman El Chapo because of his height.
He doesn't grow taller than a meter 67. El Chapo drops out of school early. He doesn't even
finish elementary school. Instead, he spends his time working on the marijuana and poppy
fields, a family tradition. From a young age, El Chapo is extremely ambitious. He makes
friends with big names in the local drug scene. Determined to rise through the ranks of
Mexican organized crime. First, he becomes a so-called problem solver. Whenever a
truckload of drug shipment misses schedule, El Chapo eliminates the person responsible.
His uncompromising attitude makes him trustworthy and he grows close to the kingpin of the
Guadalajara cartel. When the boss is arrested, El Chapo keeps the business running,
ultimately setting up his own organization with other traffickers, the Sinaloa cartel. He
organizes planes, trucks, and rail cars to deliver cocaine and heroin into the United States.
and he even builds border crossing tunnels, a skill that will come in handy many years
[Music] later. In those early years, one incident really puts El Chapo on the [Music] map. This
is Juan Jesus Posadas. He's the Archbishop of Guadalajara and a cardinal, one of the
highest ranks in the church. Posadas is a popular man. He advocates for the poor and
publicly condemns drug trade. Right now, he's on his way to the airport to meet an
ambassador of the Vatican. At the same time, El Chapo and his bodyguards pull into the
parking lot. They are here to catch a flight to the beach resort town of Puerto Varta, one of El
Chapo's favorite places to party. We don't know exactly what happened in this parking lot
next. One thing we know for sure, though, the Cardinal will not survive. This is the official
version. These brothers run a drug trafficking operation out of Tijana. They are at war with El
Chapo and his cartel. They fight over drug running territory and somehow they get wind that
El Chapo is going to be at the airport that day. So, one of the brothers and a group of
gunmen rush there to ambush him. When they spot him and his bodyguards, they step out of
their cars and open fire. El Chapo and his men run toward the terminal building, taking cover
behind cars in the lot. It's raining bullets, but somehow they managed to escape without
getting hit. The failed assassination leaves seven people dead, among them, the cardinal.
This is the version of events that authorities will publicly report. Badis was caught in the
crossfire. Wrong time, wrong place. But there are doubts about this story. His death doesn't
appear like a coincidence. Forensic experts will later say it's likely that the gunman killed the
cardinal deliberately. He was shot 14 times from close range. Later, the officials suggested
the gunman had mistaken the cars. El Chapo regularly drives a white Mercury Grand
Marquee, the same model Cosada sat in that day. The gunman thought it's El Chapo's car,
and opened fire. But the cardinal wore his robe when he was shot. He was not dressed at all
like a drug lord. If the gunman killed him at a close range, how could they have confused him
with El Chapo? Years later, the successor of Padus will make a serious accusation. He
claims the murder of the cardinal was a crime of the state. [Music] He believes the police
carried out the killing for the Mexican government. Bosadus had accused government
officials of having ties to these cartels. Up to this day, it remains a mystery. What really
happened in 1993 at Guadalajara [Music] airport. This is El Chapo's wife, his sons, and one
of his closest partners. Just 2 months ago, Al Chapo was captured and brought to Aliplano
Maximum Security Prison. Now, the group is working on a plan to get him out. They begin by
acquiring an old property 1 km away from the prison. Next, they buy an old warehouse
nearby. Here, they store weapons in an armored pickup truck. Then, they hire workers for
one very specific job, digging a sophisticated [Music] tunnel. Back in 1993, after the shootout
at Guadalajara airport, the Mexican government placed a bounty on El Chapo. It took just 2
weeks until he was found and arrested. He denies being responsible for the death of the
cardinal. He insists that he was the supposed target of the shootout. Ultimately, the
authorities believe him. They don't charge him for homicide, just for drug trafficking. He is
sentenced to 20 years in a Mexican prison, but he continues to run the Sinaloa cartel from
behind bars. Through his lawyers, he passes orders to his closest allies. He doesn't need to
be in the room to pull strings. His empire runs on whispered instructions and tightly

anywhere. In 2001, El Chapo has enough of life in prison. Also, the Mexican Supreme Court
just approved a law that makes it easier to extract criminals like him to the US. Time to get
out. The official version of his first prison escape is spectacular. He supposedly bribes a
guard who helps him climb into a laundry cart. The guard then pushes the cart out of the cell,
down the hallways, and through an unguarded gate to the parking lot. El Chapo jumps out
and climbs into the trunk of a car. The guard gets in and drives to the outer prison gate. After
a quick search, the car is waved through. Nobody checks the trunk. But again, that's just the
official story. Several authors and journalists don't buy it. One argues that the prison's
checkpoints were equipped with heat and motion sensors capable of detecting any living
creature, even a cat. That means the alarms would have gone off. Instead, the journalist
suggests that El Chapo may have left the prison dressed in a police uniform escorted by
other corrupt officers. One way or another, systemic corruption likely played a role, and El
Chapo put his newly won freedom to [Music] [Music] use. In the following years, the Mexican
cartel landscape changes dramatically. In 2002, the leader of the Tijana cartel is killed in a
shootout with police. One of the brothers who had supposedly tried to assassinate El Chapo
at the airport. A year later, the leader of the Gulf cartel is arrested. Two major cartels are now
without leadership. El Chapo sees an opportunity. He pushes into Tijana and Gulf territory,
triggering brutal fighting. Novo Laredo, an area along the US Mexican border, practically
turns into a war zone. Former forces of the Mexican army, begin working for El Chapo. They
clash with what's left of the Gulf Cartel, whose core fighters were partly trained by the US.
Early on, the violence results in more than a thousand deaths, many of them civilians. And
that's only the beginning. In 2006, Felipe Calderon becomes Mexico's new president,
determined to crack down on organized crime. He declares war on the cartels and deploys
the military. The violence escalates dramatically. Between 2007 and 2014, over 160,000
people died in the course of the war on drugs in Mexico. In these years of bloodshed, El
Chapo rises. It becomes the world's most wanted criminal, transforming the Sinaloa cartel
into one of the most powerful criminal organizations in history. It becomes the top supplier of
drugs to the United States. Cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine, and fentinel. El Chapo's
cartel operates in 50 countries and generates billions of dollars in profits each year. In turn,
El Chapo becomes extremely wealthy, eventually making Forb's list of the world's
billionaires. No wonder it's hard to keep him locked up. [Music] El Chapo's rescue
commando needs to know the exact location of his prison cell. So, they smuggle a GPS
watch into his prison cell disguised as a food item. Now, the workers know in what direction
they need to dig. Over the span of a year, they dig a sophisticated tunnel. A carefully
planned complex construction costing approximately $5 million to make. The tunnel is 1/2
km long and 1.70 m high. It is reinforced by a wooden frame. There are lights and even a
ventilation system. Digging a tunnel creates a lot of dirt, so the workers build a rail system
with a motorcycle adapted to it to move the dirt out of the tunnel. The construction is also
supposed to function as an escape vehicle later on. But how did El Chapo end up in Eliplano
in the first place? Andrew Hogan is an agent with the Drug Enforcement Agency. He wants
to take down the most powerful drug lord on Earth, perhaps in history. Currently, he's looking
for allies, but he soon discovers somehow there is no task force, no team, not even a single
federal agent assigned to the job, but bring El Chapo to justice. So, he takes a Spanish class
and prepares to move to Mexico. Meanwhile, one of Andrew's colleagues in the US
manages to get the pin to El Chapo's Blackberry thanks to someone in his inner circle. He
tracks down his phone to the holiday resort Cabo San Lucas. The colleague immediately
calls Andrew. They're excited and so they pass the information to the officials in Mexico. The
DEA and Mexican police quickly head down to the place where El Chapo is supposedly
hiding, but he's nowhere to be found. Next, they narrow down El Chapo's phone signal to
one of three mansions near the resort of Cabo San Lucas. This time, it's a hit. He's there.
But before the forces arrive, El Chapo just escapes through the back door. Somehow, he
makes it to an airirst strip without being caught and is flown to safety. El Chapo always
seems to be one step ahead. He constantly changes his SIM cards and phones and simply
outsmarts the authorities. One DEA agent supposedly said the Mexicans couldn't catch El
Chapo if he was standing at the Starbucks across the street from the embassy. But Andrew
Hogan doesn't give up. In May 2012, he moves to Mexico City with his family and takes over
the Sinaloa case. In the months that follow, he and his team begin intercepting members of
El Chapo's inner circle. Bit by bit, they uncovered the cartel's complex communication
system. How often numbers are changed, possible code names and GPS locations. Slowly,
a picture begins to emerge. One day, El Chapo seemingly wants to meet an underling in
person, and he sends one of his chauffeurs to pick him up. Hogan tracks his phone. The
chauffeur finally arrives at a place and Kuliaakan. The signal leads to a group of five houses.
Hogan organizes a capture operation with dozens of Mexican Marines, helicopters, and
trucks, and he joins the mission himself. They surround the property and storm inside, but
once again, El Chapo is gone. Instead, they find a strangely placed bathtub covering the
entrance to a tunnel that leads into the sewers of Kolyakan. But this time, the Marines
managed to stay in El Chapo's tale. 3 days later, they find out that one of his men had driven
him to the coastal town of Mazadlan to a hotel. The Marines enter the fourth floor of the
hotel. They storm into room 401, heading straight for the bedroom. El Chapo is with his
family. He barricades himself in the bathroom of an assault rifle. His wife pleads with the
soldiers not to harm their daughters. Shortly after El Chapo surrenders, they got him.
Andrew Hogan's job is done now. He caught the most wanted man on the planet and he
worries for the safety of his family who moved to Mexico with him. So they board a plane
back to the US. Meanwhile, El Chapo goes to Eliplano. The US is pushing hard for his
extradition. This would likely be his doom. The end of his reign. Time for another tunnel.
[Music] The rescue team and the workers managed to locate the exact spot of El Chapo's
cell shower. They build a 10- m vertical passageway that connects the tunnels to the cell,
including a ladder. All this digging and drilling creates a lot of noise. Several inmates are
complaining, but the guards ignore them. El Chapo's rescue team manages to complete the
5 million tunnel directly into his prison cell without anyone interfering. All that's left is
breaking through the cell floor. And thus comes the day. El Chapo sits on his bed. Her
surveillance camera monitors him closely. The camera also records audio. You can hear a
television. The volume is turned up, but you also hear loud banging noises. Probably
someone is breaking through the cell floor. Next, El Chapo begins to pace up and down in
his cell. After some time, he walks to his shower stall, bends over, and goes back to his bed.
He removes his shoes, sits for a second, then he walks behind the shower wall, and simply
disappears. He squeezes through the hole in the ground. It's just 50x 50 cm wide. 1 m
below, he finds footing on a ladder. He climbs down 10 m into the ground until he reaches
the tunnel. Someone is already waiting for him, likely his wife's brother. The rescuer sits on
the motorcycle and rails. El Chapo climbs on behind him. Together, they make the 1 and a
half km ride to the other end of the tunnel. When they arrive, El Chapo and his companion
climb up a small ladder through the exit shaft. They end up in an unfinished house covered
with construction material. An ATV is parked outside. They drive a short distance to a
warehouse and switch to an SUV. Then, they drive for 2 hours until they arrive at an
airirstrip. A plane is already waiting. They board it and fly to Sinaloa. [Music] Two months
later, one of El Chapo's sons posts a tweet. I'm doing fine here. You already know with
whom. Attached as a photo, presumably with his father. The tweet is tagged with a location,
Costa Rica. Let's back up for a second. Some things about this spectacular escape just don't
add up. There's video footage of guards watching their screens as El Chapo disappears. Yet,
it takes them 20 minutes to check a cell. They even wait a few more minutes before they
finally enter and check the escape hole. Also, it seems unlikely that building such a tunnel
truly went unnoticed after all inmates actively complained about the drilling noise. A large
majority of Mexicans believed the escape was an inside job. Shortly after El Chapo's second
prison escape, the prison's warden and two other officials were fired. Next, four Mexican
officials were charged. Two were members of Mexico's Secret Service based at the prison.
The other two were guards who sat in the control room monitoring El Chapo cell. The
accusation is that they bought El Chapo valuable time by not raising the alarm once the drug
lord was gone. And El Chapo, he again becomes one of the most wanted criminals on Earth.
The pressure to finally bring him to justice is higher than ever. The hunt is on. Then El Chapo
makes a crazy move. He knows he's considered a legend in Mexico and he wants even
more fame, a movie about his life on the big screen. Champen is already involved in a
production about him along with Mexican actress Kate Del Castillo. Castillo manages to
contact El Chapo and his associates. Finally, El Chapo agrees to meet her and Shan Pen in
person to talk about the movie, while technically he's on the run. This is a photo of the
meetup. Shan Penn interviews El Chapo about his career as a drug lord, a story later
published by the Rolling Stone. In it, Pen reveals that El Chapo's escape tunnel engineers
have been flown to Germany for 3 months of extensive additional training necessary to deal
with the low-lying water table beneath the prison. It's a gripping read. Beneath his smile,
there's a doubtlessness to his facial expression. A question comes to mind as I observe his
face, both as he speaks as while he listens. What is it that removes all doubt from a man's
eyes? Is it power, admirable clarity, or soullessness? But according to government sources,
the interview is also a crucial factor for investigators to get closer to El Chapo. Apparently, all
the while, they're monitoring Penn and Castillo's movements very closely. It's October 9th,
2015. Mexican special forces are closing in on him in the mountains of Sinaloa. After a while,
they actually spot him. He's only got one bodyguard with him. This is their moment. They
take off after them, chasing them through the terrain. As they get nearer, El Chapo falls off a
cliff. His bodyguard finds him and carries him to the depths of the forest. The special forces
lose sight of them and they escape. A catastrophic failure, but the authorities don't give up
the hunt. In January 2016, they get another chance. The Marines manage to locate El
Chapo once again in the coastal city of Los Muis. The clue comes from a taco order placed
from a white van. Witnesses say the driver is one of El Chapo's men. The Marines begin to
surveil the car. It ultimately leads them to a safe house. A few hours later, the soldiers storm
the place. Cartel Gman try to hold them off. A gunfight breaks out. The Marines eventually
push up to the second floor, then the roof, but El Chapo is gone. True to his form, he and
one of his gunmen fled through a hidden tunnel. Right now, they are climbing out of a
drainage tunnel a short distance away, right across from a Walmart. El Chapo and his
gunman need to escape quickly. They steal a car, guns drawn, but after just driving a few
blocks, the car breaks down, so they ditch it and lose valuable time. Then they take over
another car and manage to get on the highway, but it's too late. Police finally arrest El
Chapo, one of history's most powerful drug lords. He tells the officers, "You are all going to
die." 40 of his assassins are supposedly on their way to free him, but he gets handed over to
the Marines, and it's over. After a decade of hide-and-seek, escaping over and over again,
and all likelihood protected by systemic corruption, El Chapo has finally been caught. Later
that day, the Mexican president tweets, "Mission accomplished. We have him." Soon after, El
Chapo was extradited to the United States, the one thing he truly feared. On July 17th, 2019,
3 years after his second escape, he was sentenced to life in Colorado Supermax prison.
That's why he remains locked up to this day. The Sinaloa cartel and other Mexican cartels
are as strong as ever, operating as undeterred global organizations. There's so much more
to the story that we couldn't cover in this video, but apparently some video journalist

The Robot Chess Player Scam

This is The Turk a mechanical chess-playing robot from the 1700s that was basically
unbeatable. It made its own moves, called checkmate, and even laughed in its opponent's
face. For almost 90 years it toured the world facing some of the best chess players and
historical figures and beating them all. Hundreds of articles were written trying to expose its
secrets but no one ever figured out how it worked or if it was actually real or not. Amazingly,
the real secret behind this mysterious machine remained unknown for almost 90 years and
was almost lost completely when The Turk eventually parished in a fire. We modeled the
entire thing to show you how this incredible machine worked and how it managed to trick the
entire world for almost a century. The story begins in Vienna in 1769 where a special event
was being held by the Empress of Austria. At the event the audience were being treated to a
show by a famous French magician who performed illusions using magnets. While the
audience was blown away, one man was less than impressed. Hungarian inventor Wolf
Gang Von Kempelen He worked for the Empress and promised that he would come back
next year with a much more impressive creation of his own. And so over the next 6 months
in the secrecy of his own home, he constructed The Turk. Kempelen revealed his creation at
the next event and it was an absolute hit. The audience watched on in amazement as this
mysterious serous looking mannequin came to life moving around the chess pieces and
destroying his opponent. Word spread quickly about The Turk and soon hundreds of people
around Europe wanted to take on the machine 10 years went by, but the demand to see The
Turk was higher than ever and so Kempelen took the machine out on the road starting its
first European tour in 1783. This is how a typical show would go. At the beginning, Kempelen
would go around opening the cabinet doors and inviting people to look inside the machine
starting with the left door. It would reveal a compartment full of complex machinery. To show
that there was nothing hiding behind the machinery he opened the door at the back and lit a
candle so that the audience could see right through the machine, then he closed the rear
door and opened up the main compartment which was mostly empty. With all the doors
open, Kempelen pulled out a set of chess pieces from the drawer at the bottom. The Turk
was now ready to play. Kempelen would challenge the most intelligent member of the
audience to try and beat The Turk and almost always The Turk would come out on top.
Kempelen and his machine continued traveling across Europe playing some of the most
skilled Chess Masters of the time. For the final game in France The Turk went up against
Benjamin Franklin Despite being a chess fanatic, The Turk quickly defeated him with ease.
After this, speculation behind the machine's authenticity started to ramp up. While many
believed it really was a completely automated machine some thought it was also being
controlled by magnets and some thought there was a small child operating The Turk from
inside but Kempelen was determined to take the secret to his grave and in 1804 he passed
away at the age of 70. The Turk was eventually sold to a German inventor called Johann
Maelzel for around $300,000. Over the course of several years he figured out The Turk's
secrets and took it back out on the road. This time finding even more success in America.
But one day, after performing in Baltimore, an article was written in the local newspaper that
appeared to give away The Turk's secret. Two young boys had climbed onto The Turk's
storage shed and saw Maelzel opening the cabinet and a man climbing out of it. A few days
later the newspaper retracted the article because the boy's story couldn't be verified. This is
still a problem in today's world that's why we're working with Ground News again for this

figuring out the secrets behind his new machine, Maelzel took The Turk back out on the
road. One of his first opponents was none other than Napoleon Bonaparte, who he defeated
with ease. Maelzel and The Turk spent the next 20 years touring all the way from Boston to
the Mississippi River and everywhere in between. The Turk was more popular than ever, but
still nobody knew if it was real or not. Famous Poet Edgar Alan Poe was invited to inspect
the machine and ended up writing an essay on how he thought it worked. He thought that
there was simply a man underneath The Turk's clothing that could see the chessboard and
was making all of the moves. Maelzel spent most of the 1830s touring America and Cuba
with great success but while sailing back to the US, Maelzel suddenly died at sea and The
Turk and all of its secrets were now just waiting to be uncovered once it arrived back. The
machine eventually fell into the hands of Edgar Alan Poe's physician who had always been
interested in the machine, but by then The Turk was 70 years old and without a charismatic
owner to put on the show, it was eventually donated to a museum in Philadelphia. He
remained here for over a decade until one day, a fire swept through and completely
destroyed The Turk. It was no doubt one of the best-kept secrets in the world. It traveled
everywhere, constantly under scrutiny from the world's brightest minds and yet, even
through multiple owners it managed to take its secrets all the way to the end. It seemed like
the secrets behind The Turk would remain unknown forever but a year later the son of The
Turk's last owner published an article that would finally reveal the truth. These are the
secrets behind The Turk. As it turned out, The Turk wasn't automated at all and was in fact
operated by a Chessmaster hidden inside the machine at all times. The fake machinery and
the bottom drawer didn't extend all the way to the back of the cabinet and so there was
space for the operator to sit with his legs stretched out under a fake floor. Before the left door
was opened the operator would slide forward on a movable chair into the main compartment,
closing behind him a secret door. The presenter would then open the rear door and show the
audience that there was nothing but machinery inside. as the presenter closed the rear door
the operator would slide back into his original position closing another door behind him and
in front of him. The presenter would then open up the front and rear doors to the main
compartment to allow the audience to see inside . Having seen right through the whole
machine the audience would now have full belief that no one could be hidden inside the
machine. the doors were then locked and The Turk was ready to come to life. The operator
would slide back into the main compartment and open a hidden door inside The Turk's body
revealing a candle, a chessboard, and a mechanical lever which would control The Turk's
arm. The lever was in fact a clever pantograph mechanism using strings that would mimic
the exact movements of The Turk's arm. It had a pointer which the operator could lift to raise
the arm and twist to close The Turk's fingers. By moving the pointer over the chessboard it
would move The Turk's hand over the exact same square on the real chessboard. But how
did the operator see the moves his opponent was making? Above the operator was a fake
ceiling that could be taken down to reveal the bottom of the real chessboard. under each
square was a small magnet dangling from a copper wire. The chess pieces themselves also
had magnets in their base and so the magnets would get pulled up wherever there was a
chess piece. As his opponent picked up a chess piece the corresponding magnet would drop
and wobble for about 30 seconds allowing the operator to see what piece had moved and
replicate it on his own chessboard. To this day, the original operator of The Turk is unknown
but during Maelzel's tours the machine was operated by an impressive list of chess masters
all of whom kept their part of the secret. Over the course of its 90-year career, The Turk
played hundreds, if not thousands of games and won almost all of them. Amazingly, the
story of these young boys seeing an operator climb out of the machine was almost certainly
true, but The Turk went on to keep it secret for another 30 years. And now for the Primal

Killing Russia's Most Hated Man

It's just turned midnight in the Russian capital of St. Petersburg. The streets are empty, and
with temperatures below freezing most of the city has gone to sleep. But at a royal palace in
the center of the city a party is being planned. A party for just one person. The special guest
is on his way and will be arriving in just a few minutes. Meanwhile, back at the palace cakes
and wine are being carefully laced with poison. The guest was headed straight for a trap.
That night, a gang of high society men carried out an elaborate plan to kill and dispose of
Rasbutin the famous mystical healer who had become the most hated man in Russia. We
modeled the entire thing to show you why he was killed and the play-by-play timeline of his
assassination. Very few people have lived a crazier life than Gregori Yimovich Rasputin. He
went from being a poor peasant that couldn't read or write to being a god-like saint
surrounded by royalty and power. But to really understand why he became so hated we
need to go back to the beginning. Rasputin grew up in a small farming village in Siberia and
lived a pretty normal life. Worked on the farm, got married, and had kids. But at the age of
28, something changed in Rasbutin's life. Religion took over and suddenly he left his town
and family behind to go on a pilgrimage. Wandering from town to town he started developing
a small circle of followers who prayed with him and listened to him preach. Everywhere he
went, priests and villagers were captivated by his charisma and his unique ability to heal
people. Rasputin continued walking all across Russia claiming to heal people's illnesses and
by 1905, he had earned a god-like reputation. This reputation finally led him all the way to
the top when the Empress of Russia asked him to heal her son who had been suffering from
hemophilia. Despite his serious condition Rasputin took away his medication began praying
for him and miraculously he got better. Whatever he had done, it earned him the trust from
the most powerful woman in the country and soon the empress became close friends with
Rasbutin often depending on him for his wise advice. In just a handful of years, Rasputin's
holy reputation had taken him from the bottom all the way to the top. But his divine
supernatural image had a dark side. Rasputin was an alcoholic one that partied and had
constant affairs with his followers. In 1915, police set up a secret surveillance team and
started following his day-to-day activities. On the 19th of February, Rasputin was seen
coming out of a building with two ladies. He never returned home until 3:00 in the morning.
On the 10th of March, the police followed him through the city and saw him meeting up with
a prostitute. On the 12th of May, Rasputin brought a different prostitute back to his flat and
locked her in a room until she was later set free by a servant. Almost every other day,
Rasputin was seen coming home with prostitutes and his own female followers, having
drunken parties and singing from his apartment. Despite his wild life, he remained close
friends with the empress and this brought him an immense amount of power. So much so
that Rasputin started making his own political decisions, appointing new ministers and giving
advice on the war. The public was turning on Rasputin. To many, the Zar and the Empress
had become puppets being controlled by the evil and corrupt Rasputin. At the time, the
media wasn't allowed to report on this. But as things got more and more tense, newspapers
were willingly paying censorship fines just write about Rasputin's influence over Russia. All
of this anger finally came out in November, 1916 when politician Vladimir Purishkevich was
giving a speech at the Russian Parliament. Although many across the country felt the same
way, no one had expressed their hatred of Rasputin so openly until now. In the audience that
day was Felix Yusupov. Despite being part of the royal family himself, he despised
everything Rasputin stood for. To him, Rasputin was the devil and he had to be taken out in
order to save Russia. And so he called Purishkovech. With that message, it was clear that
both men were on the same page. And just a week later, they met on board Purishkovech's
train, which was parked at a nearby train station. Yusupov had brought along Grand Duke
Dimitri Pavlovich, the Tsar's cousin, Dr. Lazovert, an old military friend and Lieutenant Sergei
Sukhotin. That evening, the five men came up with the grand plan to lure Rasputin in and kill
him. Here's how they planned to do it. On the chosen night, the gang would meet at
Yusupov’s palace in the center of the city. At precisely 1:00 a.m., Yusupov would go to pick
up Rasputin, driven by Dr L. who would be dressed as a chauffeur. When they got back to
the palace, Dr. L would park close to the entrance in such a way that would hide Rasputin
from the street. They knew that Rasputin had three security agencies protecting him. So it
was likely that spies would be keeping an eye on his every move. Once inside the palace,
Dr. L would join the rest of the gang in a room upstairs, while Yusupov and Rasputin would
go down to the basement, which the gang had turned into a lavish dining room. Here, the
thick concrete walls would stop any screams or gunshots from being heard outside the
palace. During the party, Yusupov would offer Rasputin various cakes and wines that had
been laced with powerful cyanide poison and if all went well, Rasputin would be dead in just
15 minutes. To get rid of any evidence, the gang would then drive to Purishkevich’s train,
burn Rasputin’s clothes and park the car on the cargo wagon, ready to leave St Petersburg
later that night. The gang would then walk through the city to another car and drive back to
the crime scene. Finally, they would wrap up Rasputin’s body, drive to a nearby bridge, and
throw him into the icy river, hopefully never to be seen again. But all of this would only
happen if Rasputin agreed to come to the party in the first place. They needed a way to lure
him in. And so, Yusupov started faking chest pains and went to Rasputin for his healing
powers. Throughout the month, the two met up several times, and Yusupov managed to
become Rasputin’s friend. With every meeting, Rasputin always asked to meet Yusupov’s
wife, 21-year-old Irina. Yusupov was never going to let Rasputin anywhere near his wife, but
it did give him an idea. He told Rasputin that Irina would be throwing a party with her friends
on the 29th, and invited Rasputin to come and meet her. Rasputin, being the ultimate ladies
man, couldn’t resist. The plan was set, but with so many moving parts, the gang needed a

and by 11pm, the streets were empty. It was time to start the party. Purishkevich left his train
at 11:15, and nervously waited to be picked up. At 11:50, 20 minutes later than had been
planned, Dr. L pulled up beside him. Purishkevich got in and together they drove to the
Yusupov palace. According to their plan, the gates at the side entrance were to be open at a
specific time, but by the time they arrived, the gates were closed. To avoid raising any
suspicion, they kept driving and slowly lapped back around a few minutes later but the gates
were still closed. Purishkevich got out and entered the main entrance by foot while Dr L
drove around until the gates were finally opened. They met the three other men in the dining
room where a large table was filled with pink cakes and other delights. Rasputin had told
Yusupov that his spies didn’t leave his apartment until just after midnight, so the gang had
some time to kill before picking him up. Dr L took this opportunity to start separating the
cakes, and grating the powerful cyanide poison into the cream layers. Then he poured
several glasses of red wine and laced them too. Meanwhile, back at his apartment, Rasputin
was getting ready for the party. For him, it was going to be another good night. Although he
agreed not to tell anyone where he was going that night, he couldn't keep it in and ended up
telling his daughter and his secretary. Back at the palace, the gang were adding the final
touches to the party. In order to make it seem like the party guests had just moved upstairs,
they placed left behind bits of cake and drinks on the table and began playing music on the
gramophone. With everything in place, Yusupov and Dr L left to go and pick up Rasputin at
around 12:15. 45 minutes later, the gang heard a car pulling into the palace. Yusupov and
Rasputin entered the dining room while Dr. L. joined the rest of the gang upstairs. So far,
everything was running on time and when the deed was done, the gang would make their
way downstairs to hopefully find their enemy dead on the floor. For the next half an hour, the
gang stood at the top of the staircase, trying to listen in to the muffled conversation. Then,
Yusupov ran upstairs to tell them that Rasputin was not eating or drinking anything! Yusupov
returned to the basement, and after another half an hour, the gang heard two corks being
popped and the chinking of glasses. It seemed like it was only a matter of time now. But
another 30 minutes went by, and the conversation didn't stop. Yusupov rushed upstairs for a
second time. Yusupov rejoined his guest and continued to fake pleasant conversation. But
with every glass of wine, Rasputin was becoming more impatient, and it seemed like his
supernatural powers were somehow overcoming the poison. After another half an hour of
constant drinking, Yusupov ran upstairs and told the gang that the poison simply wasn’t
working. Without hesitation, Yusupov picked up his pistol and returned to the basement. It
didn’t take long until the gang heard a loud bang and a body hitting the floor. They rushed
downstairs to finally see their enemy lying on the floor. His body was still twitching and he let
out a few weak breaths, but they were sure that Rasputin was finally dead. Without wasting
any more time, they turned off the lights and continued following the plan. Three of the men
made their way to Purishkevich’s train to start burning the evidence. Since Lieutenant S.
looked the most like Rasputin, he was wearing his coat. That way, any spies that were
following them might think Rasputin was inside the car. Back at the palace, Yusupov and
Purishkevich were trying to process what they had just done. It had taken them longer than
expected, but their plan was almost over. But all of a sudden, they heard footsteps coming
from downstairs and a door opening. To their amazement, the man they thought was dead
was now staggering through the courtyard and headed straight for the exit. Purishkevich
grabbed his pistol and chased Rasputin into the courtyard. Just as he was reaching the gate,
two bullets fired out from Purishkevich’s gun, but both missed. 2 people were walking by
when Purishkevich began firing and quickly ran off. No matter how hard they tried, it seemed
like Rasputin really was invincible. But Purishkevich let out two more shots, which finally
struck Rasputin in the back, finishing him off. It was now well after 3 in the morning, and the
plan had taken a chaotic turn. Rasputin was now lying dead at the gates of the palace, in
plain sight for anyone in the street to see. Purishkevich ran back inside and came across two
soldiers protecting the palace. He told them what happened and to his relief, they were glad
that someone had finally killed Rasputin. The soldiers brought Rasputin’s body back inside
and wrapped it up in a curtain. Meanwhile, Yusupov was going crazy in another room. As all
of this was happening, a policeman came to the palace and started questioning Purishkevich
about the gunshots. And just like that, the police officer was let go. The rest of the gang
returned 5 minutes later, still carrying Rasputin's clothes. As it turned out, the stove on board
the train was too small, and Rasputin's coat and shoes didn't fit inside. Nonetheless, the
gang had no time to waste, And so they put Rasputin’s wrapped-up body into the back of the
car and hit the road. To avoid suspicion, they drove slowly, eventually leaving the city and
arriving at the Petrovsky Bridge. Without wasting any more time, they tied some weights to
his body and threw him into a hole in the ice along with his coat and his shoes. It was now 5
in the morning, and the gang finally arrived back to the palace, only to find they had left
behind Rasputin’s other shoe, and blood stains all over the courtyard. It was simply too late.
All the men went back to their homes. Whatever happened next was up to fate. Just two
days later, blood was discovered on the Petrovsky Bridge and a boot was found sticking out
of the ice. Police began searching down the river and quickly came across Rasputin’s body,
frozen under the ice. There was no hiding who did it. The five men had done very little to
cover up their crime. Everyone knew where Rasputin was that night. Despite this, the Zar
thought that arresting any of them might heighten the already tense political scene going on
throughout Russia. Pavlovich, Dr. L and Lieutenant S. eventually left Russia. Purishkevich
stayed in Russia but died just a few years later. Yusupov, the man behind the whole thing,
was exiled, and spent the rest of his life in France with his wife Irina.​

helicopter got there he sees the two inmates that have taken out the trash brings his right
hand to his Temple and gives them an Air Force salute then he climbs into the helicopter
dozens of inmates stand pressed against the bars of their cells to watch as the helicopter
lifts off the entire prison erupts into Applause it's almost like a movie scene a French
