CONSUMER RIGHTS PROJECT

INTRODUCTION

In our daily life, every individual depends on the market to fulfill their needs by purchasing
goods and services such as food, clothing, electronic items, transportation, and
communication services. When a person buys and uses these goods or services for personal
use, they are known as a consumer. However, the modern marketplace is not always fair and
transparent. Many sellers may engage in unfair practices such as selling low-quality products,
charging extra prices, or providing misleading advertisements. Therefore, consumer rights are
important to protect buyers from exploitation and to ensure fairness in the market.

WHO IS A CONSUMER

A consumer is any person who purchases goods or services for personal use and not for
resale or commercial purposes. Consumers are the final users of products and services. For
example, when a person buys clothes, food, or electronic devices for personal use, they
become consumers. Consumers play an important role in the economy because production
depends on their needs and demands.

CAUSES OF CONSUMER EXPLOITATION

Consumers are often exploited because many people are not aware of their rights. Misleading
advertisements, adulteration, duplicate products, black marketing, and lack of proper
information are some common reasons for exploitation. Sellers may try to earn more profit by
cheating consumers through unfair trade practices.

CONSUMER RIGHTS

Consumer rights are legal rights given to consumers for their protection. These rights include
the right to safety, right to information, right to choose, right to be heard, right to seek
redressal, and right to consumer education. These rights help consumers make informed
choices and protect them from unfair practices.

CONSUMER RESPONSIBILITIES

Consumers also have certain responsibilities. They should check product labels carefully, ask
for bills, verify expiry dates, avoid duplicate products, and remain aware of their rights.
Responsible consumers help in creating a fair and honest marketplace.
CONSUMER PROTECTION IN INDIA

The government of India has introduced laws to protect consumers from exploitation. The
Consumer Protection Act provides legal support to consumers and helps them file complaints
against unfair trade practices. Consumer courts are established at district, state, and national
levels to provide justice.

QUALITY MARKS

Quality marks help consumers identify safe and standard products. ISI mark is used for
industrial products, AGMARK for agricultural products, and Hallmark for gold jewelry. These
symbols help consumers make safe purchasing decisions.

CONCLUSION
Consumer awareness is essential in modern society. Every individual should know their rights
and responsibilities to avoid exploitation. An aware consumer can make better decisions and
contribute to a fair economic system.
