inputs, and limited access to loans or financial assistance.
3. What coping strategies do rice farmers use to deal with the challenges they face in their farming
practices?
-This question identifies the ways farmers deal with challenges, such as budgeting expenses, finding
additional income sources, and relying on family support.
4. What support program plan may be proposed based on the findings of the study?
-This question aims to develop possible programs or solutions that can help improve the situation of rice
farmers based on the study's findings.
2. Theoretical Framework –
-This study is based on the Sustainable Livelihood Framework, or SLF. This framework was developed by
Chambers and Conway in 1992, and later expanded by DFID in 2000 and Kollmair and colleagues in
2002. This framework explains how people use their resources or assets to support and improve their
livelihood. These assets include human, natural, financial, physical, and social capital.
The theoretical paradigm shows the relationship between the livelihood assets of farmers and their
ability to cope with challenges. The livelihood assets include human, natural, financial, physical, and
social capital. These resources help farmers manage difficulties or shocks such as financial problems,
lack of technology, or environmental risks.
When farmers are able to use these assets effectively, they can withstand and recover from challenges,
which leads to livelihood sustainability. This means they can continue farming and support their families
despite the problems they face.
3. Methodology –
- The study used a qualitative descriptive case study design to examine the experiences and challenges
of rice farmers in Barangay Inarado, Daraga, Albay.
Key Informants
-The key Informants of the study consisted of five (5) rice farmers from Barangay Inarado who were
selected through purposive sampling. The participants were chosen because they have direct knowledge
and experience in rice farming.
The criteria:
1. The participant is actively engaged in rice farming in Barangay Inarado, Daraga, Albay.
2. The participant has lived and farmed in barangay for at least five (5) years.
3. The participants depends primarily on rice farming as their main source of income.
4. The participants voluntarily agreed to participate in the study and provided informed consent.
Research Instrument:
- Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, where the researchers asked open-ended
questions regarding the farmers’experiences, challenges, and coping strategies.
Locale:
- The study was conducted in Barangay Inarado, Daraga, Albay, a rural community where many residents
depend on rice farming as their main source of livelihood.
4. Results and Summary of Tables –
1. Experiences
The findings show that the rice farmers in Barangay Inarado have long years of farming experience,
ranging from 15 to 45 years. They described rice farming as physically exhausting and emotionally
challenging because most of the work is done manually, such as planting, weeding, and harvesting.
Despite the hardships and worries caused by weather conditions, they continue farming because it is
their main source of livelihood and a way to provide food for the community.
2. Challenges
Rice farmers face many difficulties that affect their productivity and income. These include limited
agricultural infrastructure, lack of modern technology, and financial constraints. In addition,
unpredictable weather and unstable rice prices increase their economic and emotional stress, making
farming uncertain and difficult.
3. Agricultural Infrastructure
The farmers identified the lack of irrigation systems as the most serious problem. Because of this, they
rely heavily on rainwater, which affects crop production, especially during the dry season. Poor farm-to-
market roads also make it difficult to transport harvested rice, particularly during heavy rains when
roads become muddy. These problems increase labor, transportation costs, and reduce farmers’
income.
4. Use of Technology
Most farmers still practice manual farming because modern machines are expensive. Some rent hand
tractors or use old equipment, but many cannot afford them. As a result, farming becomes slower, more
tiring, and less efficient, which limits their productivity and potential income.
5. Financial Support
Farmers also struggle with the high cost of seeds, fertilizers, and labor. Because their income from
harvest is often insufficient, many farmers borrow money from cooperatives or lenders. Due to low and
unstable rice prices, it becomes difficult to repay their loans, which can lead to continuous debt and
financial stress.
6. Coping Strategies
Despite these challenges, farmers show resilience by using different coping strategies. They practice
careful budgeting, plant other crops like corn or cassava, take side jobs, and rely on family support. Their
faith, patience, and determination help them continue farming even during difficult times.
7. Proposed Support Program Plan
Based on the farmers’ suggestions, the most important support needed is a reliable irrigation system to
ensure stable water supply. Other recommendations include improving farm-to-market roads and
providing subsidized seeds and fertilizers. With proper government support, farmers believe their
productivity, income, and livelihood can improve significantly.
5. Conclusions –
Based on the findings of the study, several conclusions were drawn regarding the experiences and
challenges of rice farmers in Barangay Inarado, Daraga, Albay.
1. Most of the farmers find farming physically exhausting yet fulfilling, and they continue it to support
their families and community.
-Farmers feel that farming is hard and physically tiring, but they continue because it provides for their
families and contributes to the community’s well-being.
2. The majority of farmers face challenges such as inadequate irrigation, lack of modern machinery, and
financial constraints that affect their productivity and livelihood.
-Many farmers struggle with limited irrigation, outdated or no machinery, and financial difficulties,
which make it harder to produce rice efficiently and sustain their livelihood.
3. Most of the farmers cope with these challenges through careful budgeting, seeking alternative
income, resilience, and relying on family and faith.
-Farmers handle these challenges by managing their finances carefully, finding extra income sources,
staying resilient, and relying on support from family and faith.
4. Most of the farmers recommend support programs that include improved infrastructure, access to
technology, financial assistance, youth involvement, and fair rice pricing.
-Farmers suggest improving infrastructure, providing access to modern technology, offering financial aid,
encouraging youth participation, and ensuring fair rice prices to strengthen farming productivity and
sustainability.
6. Recommendations –
From the findings and conclusions of the study, the following recommendations were formulated
1. Families, friends, and the wider community should provide both emotional and practical support by
recognizing the farmers’ hard work and offering guidance, encouragement, and assistance. Such support
can help reduce the physical and mental challenges farmers encounter.
-Families and communities should provide emotional and practical support to farmers to help them cope
with the physical and mental challenges of farming.
2. Farmers should adopt effective time management, financial planning, and self-care practices to cope
with the demands of farming. They are encouraged to participate in training and seminars on modern
farming techniques and sustainable agriculture to enhance productivity and lessen physical strain.
-Families and communities should provide emotional and practical support to farmers to help them cope
with the physical and mental challenges of farming.
3. The Department of Agriculture, local government units, and other relevant agencies should
strengthen agricultural infrastructure by establishing reliable irrigation systems, improving
farm-to-market roads, and ensuring affordable access to modern machinery and technology training
-The Department of Agriculture and local government units should improve agricultural infrastructure,
especially irrigation systems and farm-to-market roads to make farming easier and more efficient.
4. Financial institutions, cooperatives, and government agencies should provide low-interest loans,
subsidies for seeds and fertilizers, and ensure stable rice pricing. These measures would enable farmers
to sustain their livelihood and manage economic challenges more effectively.
-Financial institutions and cooperatives should provide low-interest loans, subsidies for seeds and
fertilizers, and stable rice pricing to help farmers manage expenses and maintain their livelihood.
5. Community organizations, local government units, and agricultural agencies should develop programs
that encourage youth participation in farming, offer workshops on stress management, and create
support networks to enhance farmers’ resilience and overall, well-being.
-Community organizations and government agencies should develop programs that encourage youth
participation in farming and provide support networks for farmers.
6. Future researchers may conduct further studies on the experiences of farmers in their localities,
focusing on the adaptation strategies, coping mechanisms, and ways to increase youth participation in
agriculture to sustain the farming community.
