inputs, and limited access to loans or financial assistance.

3. What coping strategies do rice farmers use to deal with the challenges they face in their farming
practices?

-This question identifies the ways farmers deal with challenges, such as budgeting expenses, finding
additional income sources, and relying on family support.

4. What support program plan may be proposed based on the findings of the study?

-This question aims to develop possible programs or solutions that can help improve the situation of rice
farmers based on the study's findings.
2. Theoretical Framework –

-This study is based on the Sustainable Livelihood Framework, or SLF. This framework was developed by
Chambers and Conway in 1992, and later expanded by DFID in 2000 and Kollmair and colleagues in
2002. This framework explains how people use their resources or assets to support and improve their
livelihood. These assets include human, natural, financial, physical, and social capital.

The theoretical paradigm shows the relationship between the livelihood assets of farmers and their
ability to cope with challenges. The livelihood assets include human, natural, financial, physical, and
social capital. These resources help farmers manage difficulties or shocks such as financial problems,
lack of technology, or environmental risks.

When farmers are able to use these assets effectively, they can withstand and recover from challenges,
which leads to livelihood sustainability. This means they can continue farming and support their families
despite the problems they face.
3. Methodology –

This study used a qualitative descriptive case study approach to explore the experiences, challenges and
coping strategies of five (5) rice farmers in Barangay Inarado, Daraga, Albay. Data were collected
through semi-structured interviews using an interview guide prepared by the researchers. The questions
focused on the farmers’ experiences in rice farming, as well as the challenges they encountered in terms
of agricultural infrastructure, use of technology, and financial support. The responses were analyzed
through thematic analysis to identify common themes related to the farmers’ experiences and coping
strategies. Ethical considerations were observed by ensuring voluntary participation, informed consent,
and confidentiality of the participants.

4. Results and Summary of Tables –

SOP #1

THE DATA REVEALED THAT THE FIVE RICE FARMERS IN INARADO, DARAGA, ALBAY HAVE MANY YEARS
OF FARMING EXPERIENCE, RANGING FROM 15 TO 45 YEARS AND THEY SHARED SIMILAR LIFE
EXPERIENCES. THE FARMERS DESCRIBED RICE FARMING AS PHYSICALLY EXHAUSTING AND
EMOTIONALLY CHALLENGING. THEIR DAILY ROUTINE BEGINS BEFORE SUNRISE AND INCLUDES
PLOWING, PLANTING, IRRIGATING, REMOVING WEEDS, AND HARVESTING MOSTLY DONE MANUALLY.
HARVESTING USUALLY OCCURS ONCE OR TWICE A YEAR, DEPENDING ON WEATHER CONDITIONS AND
WATER SUPPLY. MANY OF THEM EXPRESSED ANXIETY DURING STORMS AND SLEEPLESS NIGHTS DURING
THE DRY SEASON BECAUSE THEIR CROPS RELY HEAVILY ON RAINFALL. FARMING REQUIRES PATIENCE,
STRENGTH, AND ENDURANCE, YET THEY CONTINUE BECAUSE IT IS THEIR ONLY LIVELIHOOD AND A WAY
TO PROVIDE FOOD FOR THE COMMUNITY.

SOP #2

THE FARMERS IN INARADO, DARAGA, ALBAY FACE MULTIPLE CHALLENGES THAT MAKE RICE FARMING
DIFFICULT AND UNCERTAIN. THEY STRUGGLE WITH LIMITED ACCESS TO AGRICULTURAL
INFRASTRUCTURE, SUCH AS IRRIGATION SYSTEMS AND RELIABLE FARM-TO-MARKET ROADS, WHICH
AFFECTS CROP PRODUCTION AND TRANSPORTATION. THE HIGH COST OF MODERN FARMING
TECHNOLOGY AND LIMITED FINANCIAL RESOURCES FURTHER CONSTRAIN THEIR PRODUCTIVITY.
UNPREDICTABLE WEATHER AND UNSTABLE MARKET PRICES ALSO ADD TO THEIR ECONOMIC AND
EMOTIONAL BURDENS.

SOP #3

DESPITE THESE CHALLENGES THE FARMERS DEMONSTRATE RESILIENCE THROUGH VARIOUS COPING
STRATEGIES. THEY PRACTICE TIGHT BUDGETING, SEEK ADDITIONAL SOURCES OF INCOME SUCH AS
PLANTING CORN OR CASSAVA, TAKE SIDE JOBS, AND RELY ON FAMILY SUPPORT. THESE COPING
MECHANISMS SHOW THEIR ADAPTABILITY AND RESOURCEFULNESS IN MANAGING LIMITED RESOURCES.
THEIR STRONG FAITH, PATIENCE, AND DETERMINATION HELP THEM CONTINUE FARMING DESPITE
HARDSHIPS.

SOP #4
ALL KEY INFORMANTS STRONG A STRONGLY RECOMMENDED THE DEVELOPMENT OF A RELIABLE
IRRIGATION SYSTEM AS THE TOP PRIORITY. THE PROPOSED SUPPORT PROGRAM PLAN INCLUDES THE
DEVELOPMENT OF RELIABLE IRRIGATION SYSTEM, IMPROVEMENT OF FARM-TO-MARKET ROADS,
PROVISION OF SUBSIDIZED OR FREE SEEDS AND FERTILIZERS. A SUSTAINABLE IRRIGATION SYSTEM
WOULD ENSURE STABLE WATER SUPPLY THROUGHOUT THE YEAR, WHILE IMPROVED ROADS WOULD
FACILITATE FASTER AND LESS COSTLY TRANSPORTATION. FINANCIAL SUBSIDIES AND TIMELY
DISTRIBUTION OF FARM INPUTS WOULD REDUCE DEPENDENCY ON LOANS. THE FARMERS BELIEVE THAT
WITH PROPER GOVERNMENT SUPPORT AND TIMELY ASSISTANCE, THEIR PRODUCTIVITY AND
LIVELIHOOD WOULD SIGNIFICANTLY IMPROVE.

5. Conclusions –

Based on the findings of the study, several conclusions were drawn regarding the experiences and
challenges of rice farmers in Barangay Inarado, Daraga, Albay.

1. Most of the farmers find farming physically exhausting yet fulfilling, and they continue it to support
their families and community.
-Farmers feel that farming is hard and physically tiring, but they continue because it provides for their
families and contributes to the community’s well-being.

2. The majority of farmers face challenges such as inadequate irrigation, lack of modern machinery, and
financial constraints that affect their productivity and livelihood. -Many farmers struggle with limited
irrigation, outdated or no machinery, and financial difficulties, which make it harder to produce rice
efficiently and sustain their livelihood.

3. Most of the farmers cope with these challenges through careful budgeting, seeking alternative
income, resilience, and relying on family and faith. -Farmers handle these challenges by managing their
finances carefully, finding extra income sources, staying resilient, and relying on support from family and
faith.

4. Most of the farmers recommend support programs that include improved infrastructure, access to
technology, financial assistance, youth involvement, and fair rice pricing.

-Farmers suggest improving infrastructure, providing access to modern technology, offering financial aid,
encouraging youth participation, and ensuring fair rice prices to strengthen farming productivity and
sustainability.

6. Recommendations –

From the findings and conclusions of the study, the following recommendations were formulated

1. THE FAMILY, FRIENDS, AND COMMUNITY OF THE FARMERS SHOULD SUPPORT FARMERS BY
RECOGNIZING THEIR HARD WORK AND PROVIDING GUIDANCE AND ENCOURAGEMENT.

-Families, friends, and community members should show appreciation for the farmers’ hard work and
provide emotional support, guidance, and encouragement to help them stay motivated and overcome
the challenges of farming.
2. FARMERS THEMSELVES SHOULD PRACTICE TIME MANAGEMENT, FINANCIAL PLANNING, SELF-CARE,
AND ATTEND TRAINING ON MODERN AND SUSTAINABLE FARMING. -Farmers should manage their time
and finances properly, take care of their health, and participate in training programs to improve their
knowledge and skills in modern and sustainable farming practices. This can help them increase
productivity and better handle the challenges in farming.

3. THE DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE, LOCAL GOVERNMENT UNITS, AND OTHER RELEVANT AGENCIES
SHOULD IMPROVE IRRIGATION, FARM-TO-MARKET ROADS, AND ACCESS TO MODERN MACHINERY AND
TRAINING.-The Department of Agriculture and local government units should improve agricultural
infrastructure, especially irrigation systems and farm-to-market roads to make farming easier and more
efficient.

4. FINANCIAL INSTITUTIONS, COOPERATIVES, AND GOVERNMENT AGENCIES SHOULD PROVIDE LOW-

INTEREST LOANS, SUBSIDIES, AND STABLE RICE PRICING FOR FARMERS. -Financial institutions and
cooperatives should provide low-interest loans, subsidies for seeds and fertilizers, and stable rice pricing
to help farmers manage expenses and maintain their livelihood.

5. COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS, LOCAL GOVERNMENT UNITS, AND AGRICULTURAL AGENCIES SHOULD

CREATE PROGRAMS THAT ENCOURAGE YOUTH PARTICIPATION, STRESS MANAGEMENT. AND FARMER
SUPPORT NETWORKS. -Community organizations and government agencies should develop programs
