The document critiques vague learning objectives, emphasizing the need for measurable and performance-based goals. It proposes three specific objectives related to Excel skills that require students to demonstrate mastery through practical application and accuracy. The author suggests that without the ability to perform these tasks independently and under pressure, true mastery has not been achieved.

Your current objective is weak. “Know how to apply” is vague and lazy.

You can’t measure “knowing,”

and it doesn’t guarantee skill. If you walked into your classroom and tested them, you wouldn’t be able
to prove mastery with that wording.

You need objectives that force performance, accuracy, and independence.

Here are stronger, standard objectives that actually indicate mastery:

1. Students should be able to accurately apply Excel formulas (SUM, AVERAGE, MIN, MAX, and
PERCENTAGE) to solve structured numerical problems without guidance.

2. Students should be able to analyze datasets and select the appropriate Excel formula to compute
correct results with at least 90 percent accuracy.

3. Students should be able to create and complete a functional Excel worksheet that integrates multiple
formulas (SUM, AVERAGE, MIN, MAX, PERCENTAGE) to solve real life problems independently.

If your students can’t do all three under time pressure and without step by step help, they haven’t
mastered anything. If you want, I can push this further into assessment tasks that actually prove these
objectives are achieved.
