ADVANCED PHYSICS & MATHEMATICS

Model Examination Paper 02

PAPER CODE: PM-MODEL-02 TIME ALLOWED: 3 HOURS TOTAL MARKS: 100

INSTRUCTIONS: Answer all questions. Use constants: g = 10 m s−2, density of water = 1000 kg m−3.

SECTION A: PURE MATHEMATICS & ALGEBRA

01. Solve the simultaneous equations: x + y + z = 6, 2x − y + 3z = 9, and −x + 2y + z = 4.

02. Without using a calculator, evaluate log10 5 given that log10 2 = 0.3010.

03. Solve for x: log (x2 − 8x) = 2.

3

04. Sketch the curves: (a) y = x2 − 6x + 5 and (b) y = −4/x. Mark all intercept boundaries.

05. Find the equation of the line passing through (2, 5) that is parallel to the line 3x + y = 9.

06. Simplify into a single logarithmic term: 3loga u − 2loga v + loga w.

07. Find the intersection points of the line y = 2x − 2 and the circle curve x2 + y2 = 25.

08. Find the real roots of the cubic polynomial function g(x) = x3 − 4x2 − 7x + 10 by factorization.

SECTION B: KINEMATICS & DYNAMICS

09. A train slows down uniformly from 30 m s−1 to 10 m s−1 over a distance of 400 m. Calculate its retardation
and the time taken.

10. An arrow is shot vertically upward with an initial speed of 35 m s−1. Find the time it takes to reach half of its
maximum altitude height.

11. A particle's velocity transitions linearly from 0 m s−1 to 15 m s−1 in 5 s, remains constant for 5 s, and
decelerates to rest in 3 s. Sketch its velocity-time graph and find the total distance.

12. A force of 45 N is applied to a 10 kg chest on a rough floor (μs = 0.5). Show mathematically whether the chest
moves or remains static.

13. A bullet of mass 0.02 kg traveling at 300 m s−1 embeds itself in a stationary wooden block of mass 1.98 kg.
Find the common final velocity.

14. A vehicle of mass 1200 kg traveling at 20 m s−1 is brought to a complete stop over a distance of 50 m. Find
the average braking force applied.

15. A rope lifts a load of mass 250 kg vertically upward. If the maximum safe tension is 3000 N, what is the
maximum permissible upward acceleration?

16. A ball is kicked from ground level with a velocity of 20 m s−1 at an angle of 45°. Determine its maximum
vertical height.

SECTION C: STATICS, FLUIDS & OPTICS

17. A non-uniform rod of length 3 m balances horizontally at a point 1.2 m from its heavier end when a mass of 5
kg is hung from that end. If the rod's mass is 8 kg, find the position of its center of mass.

18. An ice block of density 920 kg m−3 floats in water. What percentage fraction of the ice block volume remains
visible above the water surface?

19. Calculate the pressure exerted at the bottom of a swimming pool filled with water to a depth of 3.5 m. Find the
total force on a drain valve of area 0.02 m2.

20. A ray of light traveling inside water (n = 1.33) exits into air. If the incident angle inside the water is 30°,
compute the angle of refraction in air.

21. The critical angle for a specific gemstone interface with air is 24.4°. Calculate the absolute refractive index of
the gemstone.

22. Light travels through a glass sheet (n = 1.6) of thickness 0.08 m. Calculate the time taken for a light ray to
pass perpendicularly through this sheet.

23. A uniform ladder of mass 15 kg leans against a smooth wall making an angle of 30° with the vertical wall
surface. Find the frictional force required at the ground floor to prevent slipping.

24. A piece of aluminum of mass 0.5 kg and density 2700 kg m−3 is fully submerged in water. Calculate the
apparent weight of the aluminum block.
