Tutorial 02: Kinematics & Classical Linear Dynamics
Time Allowed: 2 Hours | Total Marks: 100
Instructions to Candidates: Take the acceleration due to gravity, g = 10 m s−2, unless specified otherwise. Neglect
air resistance for all projectile motions. Clear vector notations and free-body diagrams are highly recommended
where appropriate.
01. A vehicle moving along a straight horizontal track at an initial velocity of 15 m s−1 undergoes uniform linear
acceleration at a constant rate of 2 m s−2 over a displacement of 100 m. Determine:
a. The final instantaneous linear velocity of the vehicle at the end of this displacement.
b. The total time interval required to cover the specified distance.
02. A small stone is projected vertically upward from ground level with an initial velocity of 25 m s−1. Assuming
a perfectly uniform gravitational field, compute:
a. The maximum vertical height attained by the stone above its point of projection.
b. The total elapsed time during which the stone remains suspended in mid-air prior to striking the ground.
03. A particle moves strictly along a straight reference line. Its motion is characterized by a displacement-time (s-
t) relationship that increases linearly from 0 m to 20 m over the first 4 s, remains constant and flat for the
subsequent 3 s, and then decreases linearly back to 0 m in a final time interval of 2 s.
a. Accurately sketch the corresponding velocity-time (v-t) graph representing this entire motion sequence.
b. Calculate the total cumulative distance traveled by the particle over the full 9 s duration.
04. A solid block of mass 8 kg rests static upon a rough, horizontal surface where the coefficient of static friction
(μs) is equal to 0.4. A steady horizontal pulling force of 30 N is applied directly to the block. Determine
through calculation whether the block begins to move, and evaluate the precise magnitude of the frictional
force acting at the interface.
05. An object with a mass of 3 kg traveling at a constant velocity of 8 m s−1 experiences a perfectly head-on,
completely inelastic collision with a stationary object of mass 5 kg. Assuming a closed system isolated from
external friction, calculate the common final velocity of the coupled dual-mass system immediately following
the impact.

06. A uniform braking force of 1200 N is continuously applied to a vehicle of mass 800 kg that is traveling along
a straight horizontal road at a speed of 24 m s−1. Calculate the linear distance the vehicle will skid or travel
before its forward velocity is reduced to zero.
07. An elevator cabin along with its occupants possesses a combined total mass of 600 kg. If the elevator cabin
accelerates vertically upward from rest at a steady rate of 1.5 m s−2, calculate the mechanical tension
developed within the main supporting steel cable.
08. A projectile is fired from ground level with an initial velocity vector magnitude of 40 m s−1 directed at an
elevation angle of 30° above the horizontal plane. Calculate the total horizontal range achieved by the
projectile when it returns to the same horizontal launching plane.
