Automation and Robotics

Automation and robotics are widely used in the present world in industries,
hospitals, banks, agriculture, homes, and transportation. Machines and robots
help in reducing human effort, increasing speed, improving accuracy, and
ensuring safety.

In the future, automation and robotics are expected to become more advanced
with technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning, and the
Internet of Things (IoT). Smart homes, driverless cars, intelligent robots,
automated factories, and robots in healthcare and space exploration will become
more common.

Thus, automation and robotics will continue to improve productivity and quality
of life, but they may also create challenges such as job loss and the need for
skilled workers.

Machine Intelligence
Machine intelligence is the ability of a machine or computer system to think,
learn, make decisions, and solve problems like humans. It is mainly achieved
through technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, machine learning, and data
analysis.

Machine intelligence helps machines understand information, recognize patterns,

and improve their performance without direct human control.

Features of Machine Intelligence

 Solving problems quickly
 Recognizing speech, images, and text
 Improving performance over time

Applications of Machine Intelligence

 Voice assistants
 Face recognition systems
 Medical diagnosis
 Recommendation systems in shopping and entertainment
 Self-driving vehicles
 Fraud detection in banking
Computer and Robotics
Computers play an important role in robotics because they act as the brain of the
robot. A computer controls the robot’s movements, stores programs, processes
sensor data, and makes decisions.

Robotics is the branch of science and engineering that deals with the design,
construction, and use of robots. A robot uses a computer system to receive
information, process it, and perform actions.

Role of Computers in Robotics

 Controlling robot movements

 Processing information from sensors
 Storing robot programs
 Monitoring robot performance
 Communicating with other machines
 Making decisions based on collected data

A robot cannot function properly without a computer system. The computer

receives input from sensors, processes the information, and sends instructions to
motors and actuators.

For example:

 In industrial robots, computers control welding and assembly operations.

 In medical robots, computers help surgeons perform operations
accurately.
 In space robots, computers help control movement and collect
information.

Thus, computers and robotics work together to make machines more intelligent,
accurate, and useful in different fields.

Flexible Automation
Flexible automation is a type of automation system in which machines can be
easily adjusted to produce different types of products without major changes in
the production setup.

It is mainly used in industries where different products are manufactured in

small or medium quantities.
Features of Flexible Automation

 Can produce different products

 Easy to change production process
 Requires less setup time
 Controlled by computers
 Suitable for customized production

Advantages of Flexible Automation

 High production flexibility

 Reduced changeover time
 Better product variety
 Lower labour cost
 Increased productivity

Disadvantages of Flexible Automation

 High initial cost

 Complex system design
 Requires skilled operators
 Maintenance is costly

Applications of Flexible Automation

 Automobile industries
 Electronics manufacturing
 Food packaging
 Textile industries
 Pharmaceutical industries

Robotics Technology
Robotics technology refers to the use of robots, sensors, controllers, and
computer systems to perform tasks automatically.

Robotics technology is used where speed, accuracy, and safety are important.

Features of Robotics Technology

 Performs repetitive tasks

 High precision and accuracy
 Can work continuously
 Can work in dangerous environments
 Controlled through programming
Advantages of Robotics Technology

 Reduces human effort

 Improves safety
 Increases production speed
 Gives consistent quality
 Reduces errors

Disadvantages of Robotics Technology

 High installation cost

 Requires maintenance
 Needs skilled programming
 May reduce employment opportunities
 Cannot think like humans in all situations

Difference Between Flexible Automation and Robotics

Technology

Flexible Automation Robotics Technology

Flexible automation is mainly concerned with adaptable production processes,

while robotics technology focuses on using robots to carry out work
automatically.

Artificial Intelligence
Artificial Intelligence is the branch of computer science that enables machines to
think, learn, and make decisions like humans. AI systems can analyze data,
recognize patterns, solve problems, and improve their performance over time.

AI is widely used in robots, computers, smartphones, medical systems, and

industrial machines.
Features of Artificial Intelligence

 Learning from experience

 Decision making
 Problem solving
 Speech recognition
 Image recognition
 Automatic control

Applications of Artificial Intelligence

 Voice assistants
 Self-driving vehicles
 Medical diagnosis
 Face recognition
 Online recommendations
 Industrial robots

Automated Manufacturing
Automated manufacturing is the process of using machines, robots, and
computer systems to produce goods with minimum human involvement.

In automated manufacturing, machines perform tasks such as cutting, welding,

assembling, packaging, and quality checking automatically.

Features of Automated Manufacturing

 High production speed

 Better accuracy
 Continuous operation
 Reduced human effort
 Improved product quality

Advantages of Automated Manufacturing

 Increased productivity
 Lower labour cost

Robotics in india
Robotics is growing rapidly in India and is becoming important in industries
such as manufacturing, healthcare, agriculture, defense, transportation, and
space research.

At present, robots are widely used in automobile factories, packaging industries,

welding, painting, assembly work, and quality inspection. Hospitals use robotic
systems for surgery and diagnosis, while agriculture uses drones and robots for
crop monitoring, spraying, and harvesting. Indian Space Research Organisation is
also using robotics in space missions, including the humanoid robot Vyommitra
for future space travel.

The future of robotics in India is very promising because of programs such as

Digital India, Make in India, and Startup India. These initiatives are encouraging
industries and startups to adopt robotics and automation technologies.

The Government of India is also preparing a national robotics roadmap that

focuses on self-reliance, local manufacturing of robotic components, and the use
of robotics in healthcare, defense, agriculture, and manufacturing. The main goal
is to move from simple automation to intelligent robots that can work with
humans.

In the future, India is expected to see:

 Smart factories
 Driverless vehicles
 AI-powered robots
 Robotic surgeries
 Defense robots
 Space robots
 Household service robots
 Smart farming robots

However, India still faces some challenges such as high cost, lack of skilled
workers, limited research facilities, and dependence on imported robotic parts.
Despite these challenges, robotics has a bright future in India because industries,
educational institutions, and the government are investing more in this field.

Future of robotics
The future of robotics is expected to be more advanced, intelligent, and useful in
everyday life. Robots will not only work in factories but also in hospitals, homes,
schools, agriculture, transportation, and space exploration.

Future robots will use more Artificial Intelligence, machine learning, sensors, and
the Internet of Things to make decisions and work independently. Many robots
will be able to understand voice commands, recognize objects, and communicate
with humans naturally.

Important future developments in robotics include:

 Human-like robots
 Driverless vehicles
 Medical robots for surgery and patient care
 Agricultural robots for harvesting and monitoring crops
 Service robots in hotels, airports, and shopping malls
 Smart home robots
 Military and defense robots
 Space exploration robots

Future industries will use collaborative robots, also called cobots, which can
work safely with humans. Robots will also become part of smart factories where
they communicate with machines and computers automatically.

Healthcare is expected to become one of the biggest areas for robotics. Future
medical robots will help doctors in surgeries, patient monitoring, rehabilitation,
and medicine delivery with greater accuracy and less human error.

Humanoid robots are also becoming more common. Many companies are
developing robots that can walk, speak, carry objects, and help people in daily
life. Experts believe that these robots will become more useful by 2030.

Although robotics has many benefits, future challenges include high cost, job loss
in some sectors, privacy concerns, and the need for skilled workers. Even with
these challenges, robotics will continue to improve productivity, safety, and
quality of life.
