WORKSHEET-3
3. CURRENT ELECTRICITY
1. What is the order of magnitude of drift velocity of electrons in a conductor? Deduce the relation
between the current flowing through a conductor and drift velocity of electrons in it.
2. (a) Obtain the condition of balance of a Wheatstone bridge.
(b) Find net resistance of the network of resistors connected between A and B, as shown in figure.
3. (a)Two cells of emf E1 and E2 with internal resistances r1 and r2 respectively, are connected in
parallel by connecting their positive terminals together and negative terminals together. Deduce
anexpression for equivalent emf and equivalent internal resistance of the combination.
(b) A parallel combination, as stated in (a) above, of two cells of emfs E and 3E and internal
resistances R each is connected across a resistance 2R. Find the current that flows through resistance
2R.
4. A copper wire is stretched to increase its length by 1%. Then the change in its resistance is close to
(A) 1% (B) 4% (C) –4% (D) 2%
5. Assertion (A) : Two electric heaters of power P1 and P2 (> P1) are joined in series across a dc
source of voltage V. The power consumed by the combination will be less than that consumed by P1
when connected across the same source.
Reason (R) : The power consumed by a electric device when connected to a dc source of voltage V is
proportional to its resistance.
(A) Both Assertion (A) and Reason (R) are true and Reason (R) is the correct explanation of Assertion
(A).
(B) Both Assertion (A) and Reason (R) are true, but Reason (R) is not the correct explanation of
Assertion (A).
(C) Assertion (A) is true, but Reason (R) is false.
(D) Assertion (A) is false and Reason (R) is also false.
6. (a) Explain the statement : “Current is a scalar although we represent current with an arrow”.
(b) Use Kirchhoff’s rules to find the current through 3 resistor in the circuit shown in the figure :
7. (a) An electric field E is established across the ends of a cylindrical conductor of length L and area
of cross-section A. Discuss how electrons attain an average velocity, independent of time. Hence,
obtain a relation between current in the conductor and this ‘average velocity’ of electrons.
(b) (i) This ‘average velocity’ is found be few mm/s for currents in range of a few amperes. How then
is current established almost the instant a circuit is closed ?
(ii) Two copper wires having their radii in the ratio of 3 : 2 are connected in series across a battery.
Find the ratio of the drift velocities of the electrons in the wires.
8. Calculate the temperature at which the resistance of a conductor becomes 20% more than its
resistance at 27 0C. The value of the temperature coefficient of resistance of the material of
conductor is 2.0 x10-4 0 C-1.
9. (a) Why manganin is used in wire-wound standard resistors ? Calculate the temperature at which
the resistance of a wire increases by 25% of its resistance at room temperature 27.5 0C ? The
temperature coefficient of resistance of the material of the wire is 0.004 0C-1.
(b) How does the resistivity of a semiconductor depend on temperature? Show it on a plot.
10. Assertion (A) : In a Wheatstone bridge circuit, if we interchange the position of the cell and the
galvanometer, the balance condition P/Q = R/ S remains unchanged.
Reason (R) :P/Q= R/S →Q /S= P/R so balance condition remains same.
(A) Both Assertion (A) and Reason (R) are true and Reason (R) is the correct explanation of the
Assertion (A).
(B) Both Assertion (A) and Reason (R) are true, but Reason (R) is not the correct explanation of the
Assertion (A).
(C) Assertion (A) is true, but Reason (R) is false.
(D) Both Assertion (A) and Reason (R) are false.
11. (a) Establish the relation between drift velocity of electrons (vd) and electric current (I) in a
conductor.
(b) How is vd affected when the length of the conductor is doubled, keeping the voltage applied
across the conductor constant ?
