Living things breathe, grow, and change. Non-living things stay the same!

Look around the room. Point out one thing that is alive (like a pet or a houseplant) and one thing
that is not alive (like a chair or a book)!

Parts of a Plant

The green leaves catch sunlight to make healthy food, while bright
flowers make seeds for new plants.

The strong stem holds the plant up tall, while hidden roots drink fresh
water and nutrients from deep in the soil.

Next time you go outside, touch a safe green leaf or look at the tall stem of a flower. Can you see
where the roots go into the ground?

Flowers bloom and baby animals are born. The weather is warm and days are long.

Leaves change color and drop to the earth. The air turns cold and crisp, bringing frost.

Daytime Sky Nighttime Sky
The bright Sun warms our world. Birds The glow of the Moon and twinkling
fly, people wake up, work, play, and go stars light up a dark sky. The world

When the sky turns dark tonight, look out for the moon! Does it look like a full round circle or a
curved banana shape?
UNIT 3: PHYSICAL SCIENCE
Where Does Rain Come From?
1. Water Rises up (Evaporation)
The warm sun heats up water in puddles, lakes, and oceans, turning it into invisible vapor that
travels high into the air.
2. Clouds Form (Condensation)
High in the sky, the cold air turns that water vapor back into tiny droplets, gathering together to
make big fluffy clouds.
3. Rain Drops Fall (Precipitation)
When clouds get too heavy with water, the droplets drop down back to earth as refreshing rain or
snowy winter flakes.
PUDDLE SCIENTIST TEST
After a rainy day, find a tiny puddle. Watch it carefully over a few hours. When the sun comes out,
notice how the puddle slowly disappears!

Some things stay on top of the water, while heavy objects drop right to the bottom!

Close your eyes tight for five seconds and just listen. What is one sound you can hear right now?

things like iron, steel, refrigerators, and metal keys.

MAGNET INVESTIGATION
With an adult's help, find a colorful magnet on your refrigerator. Test if it sticks to a metal spoon.
