CHAPTER
9:
WORD
ASSEMBL
E GAME
Let's Play!
MECHANICS
How to Play?
1. The class will be divided into groups.
2. Each group will receive an envelope containing scrambled (jumbled)
letters that form a word.
3. At the signal “Go,” the groups will open their envelopes and work
together to arrange the letters correctly.
4. Once they have formed the correct word, they must run to the board
and stick the letters in the correct order.
5. The first group to correctly assemble and post the word on the board
will earn point.
OBJECTIVES
At the end of the Chapter, the student should be able to:
• Cite appropriate techniques and tools for formative
assessment;
• Use appropriate techniques and tools for formative
assessment;
• Explain how scoring rubrics can facilitate formative
assessment and
• Reason why out self-assessment is an important
feature of formative assessment
INTRODUCTION
What is Formative Assessment?
FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT
-It is an ongoing process teachers use during
instruction to gather evidence of learning and
immediately adapt teaching to meet student needs.
Unlike end-of-unit exams, these check-ins are low
stakes, feedback-oriented, and designed to shine a
light on misunderstandings while there’s still time to
fix them—saving both students and teachers from
last-minute surprises.
Let’s Ring the Bell
TECHNIQUES FOR FORMATIVE
ASSESSMENT
Here are some techniques given by Fisher and Frey (2007) that teachers can use
while teaching to check on student's understanding:
The teacher asks, “Is the sentence correct?” Students raise
cards that say YES or NO at the same time. What technique is
used?
A. Hand Signals
B. Games
C. Response Cards
D. Quiz

RESPONSE CARDS
1. Response cards
-These are either pre-printed or
write-on cards.
Pre-printed cards
-have responses on them such
as their responses in real time.
"Yes" or "No".
Write on cards
-allow students to indicate

HAND SIGNALS
Examples are "thumbs up" means
"I understand and can explain it';
"thumbs sideways" means "I do
not understand."
"I'm not completely sure about...";
"thumbs down" means “I don’t
understand”.
The teacher divides the class into groups and lets them play

GAMES FOR FORMATIVE
ASSESSMENT
Why are games important
as a form of assessment in
school?
SELF-ASSESSMENT IN
FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT
An increasing trend in formative assessment is
self-assessment. Self-assessment is aligned
with the principle of learner agency which
means that learning involves the activity and
the initiative of the learner, more than the
inputs that are transmitted to him/her by the
teacher. (Davis and McGowin,2007)
SCORING RUBRICS AND
FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT
In formative assessment, teachers give
feedback. These feedbacks are made more
specific when they are based on rubrics
which enumerate the criteria and describe
the expected student's perfomance (process
and product).
SCORING RUBRICS AND
FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT
Scoring rubrics especially Analytic rubrics
are, therefore, a good framework for
feedback. (Brookhart, 2013). Analytic
rubrics are of great help to students in
assessing their own progress.
ADDITIONAL FORMATIVE
ASSESSMENT STRATEGIES
Below are formative assessment strategies from Watanabe's book on Mindful Assessment:
THE 6 ESSENTIAL FLUENCIES OF
INNOVATIVE LEARNING (2016)
1. The teacher gives each group a chart. Each student writes
one idea before passing it to the next member. What
Formative strategy is used?
A. Think-Pair-Share
B. Exit Ticket
C. One-Minute Paper
D. Round Robin Chart

D. Round Robin Chart
ADDITIONAL FORMATIVE
ASSESSMENT STRATEGIES
1. Round Robin Charts -Teacher passes charts among
groups to assess understanding. Each group of 4 or 5
students begins with a chart and some markers.
2.A teacher asks questions to one student, then to a small
group, and later to the whole class to check their
understanding during the lesson. What formative assessment
technique is the teacher using?
A. Response cards
B. Questioning strategies
C. Hand signals
D. Peer assessment

ADDITIONAL FORMATIVE
ASSESSMENT STRATEGIES
1. Questioning strategies- Questioning strategies may
be used with individuals, small groups, or the entire
class.
3. A student summarizes a lesson in words, drawings, and a
single sentence. What strategy is used?
A. 3-2-1 Countdown
B. One-Minute Paper
C. 3-Way Summary
D. Exit Ticket
3. A student summarizes a lesson in words, drawings, and a
single sentence. What strategy is used?
A. 3-2-1 Countdown
B. One-Minute Paper
C. 3-Way Summary
D. Exit Ticket
ADDITIONAL FORMATIVE
ASSESSMENT STRATEGIES
3. 3 Way summaries- Students can work
in groups or individually. In response to a
question or topic inquiry, they write three
different summaries
• 10-15 WORDS LONG
•30-50 WORDS LONG
• 75-100 WORDS LONG
4. Students think about a question, discuss with a partner,
then share with the class. What strategy is this?
A. Round Robin
B. Think-Pair-Share
C. Exit Ticket
D. Creative Project

A. Round Robin
B. Think-Pair-Share
C. Exit Ticket
D. Creative Project
ADDITIONAL FORMATIVE
ASSESSMENT STRATEGIES
4. Think-Pair-share- The teacher asks a
question, and students write down their answers.
Students are then placed in pairs to discuss their
responses.
5. Students write 3 things learned, 2 interesting facts, and 1
question. What is this called?
A. Exit Ticket
B. Round Robin
C. One-Minute Paper
D. 3-2-1 Countdown

question. What is this called?
A. Exit Ticket
B. Round Robin
C. One-Minute Paper
D. 3-2-1 Countdown
ADDITIONAL FORMATIVE
ASSESSMENT STRATEGIES
5. 3-2-1 Countdown- Teacher requires students to
respond to three separate statements at the end of the
lesson.
• 3 things you didn't know before
•2 things that surprised you about this topic
•1 thing you want to start doing with what you've learned
6. Students quickly write what they learned and what they still
don’t understand. This is called:
A. One-Minute Paper
B. Exit Ticket
C. Think-Pair-Share
D. Creative Project

C. Think-Pair-Share
D. Creative Project
ADDITIONAL FORMATIVE
ASSESSMENT STRATEGIES
6. One-minute Paper - are usually done at the end of the
day. Students can work individually or in groups here.
ADDITIONAL FORMATIVE
ASSESSMENT STRATEGIES
They must answer a brief question in writing. Typical
questions posed by teachers center around:
• Main point
•Most surprising concept
•Questions not answered
•Most confusing area of a topic
7. A teacher asks students to answer a question before
leaving the classroom. This is called:
A. Admit Ticket
B. Summary Chart
C. Round Robin
D. Exit/Admin Ticket
7. A teacher asks students to answer a question before
leaving the classroom. This is called:
A. Admit Ticket
B. Summary Chart
C. Round Robin
D. Exit/Admin Ticket
ADDITIONAL FORMATIVE
ASSESSMENT STRATEGIES
7. Exit/ admit Ticket- Exit tickets are small pieces of
paper or cards that students give to the teacher as they
leave the classroom. Students write down one main idea
that they learned that day.
8. Students create posters, videos, or models based on a
lesson. What strategy is this?
A. One-Minute Paper
B. Creative Extension Project
C. Exit Ticket
D. 3-2-1 Countdown
8. Students create posters, videos, or models based on a
lesson. What strategy is this?
A. One-Minute Paper
B. Creative Extension Project
C. Exit Ticket
D. 3-2-1 Countdown
ADDITIONAL FORMATIVE
ASSESSMENT STRATEGIES
8. Creative Extension Project -Teacher asks
students to come up with simple projects to
demonstrate comprehension. These don't have to be
big and complicated.
ADDITIONAL FORMATIVE
ASSESSMENT STRATEGIES
They can take a day, a half-day, or even an hour. Here are examples of quick
projects:
• Create a poster or collage illustrating the subject matter.
• Record a rehearsed skit or podcast discussing the topics
covered.
• Build a diorama about the subject and create a narrative behind
it.
• Let students design their own flashcards to test each other with
Keynote presentations made by students on the topic.
CONCLUSION
• Formative assessment is an essential part of the teaching and
learning process because it allows teachers to continuously
monitor students’ understanding and provide immediate
feedback.
• Through various techniques such as response cards, hand
signals, games, and questioning strategies, teachers can easily
identify learning gaps and adjust instruction accordingly.
• It also promotes active participation, critical thinking, and
learner independence through self-assessment and the use of
scoring rubrics.
• Therefore, formative assessment ensures that learning is not
only measured, but continuously improved, leading to more
