1. What Are WH-Questions?

WH-Questions are open-ended questions in English that begin with a word containing “Wh”
(except How). They are used to get specific information, not just yes/no answers.

Main WH-words:

What, Where, Why, When, Which, Whose, Whom, Who, How.

2. What Are They Used For?

- What → asks about things or information.

- Where → asks about places.

- Why → asks for reasons.

- When → asks about time or dates.

- Which → asks for choices.

- Whose → asks about possession.

- Whom → asks about the object person.

- Who → asks about people.

- How → asks about manner or process.

3. How Are WH-Questions Formed?


Structure:

WH-word + Auxiliary Verb + Subject + Main Verb + Complement?

Examples:

- What are you doing now?

- Where does she live?

Auxiliary verbs:

Present simple → do/does

Past simple → did

Present continuous → am/is/are

Past continuous → was/were

Present perfect → have/has

When the WH-word is the subject → No auxiliary:

- Who broke the window?

- What made that noise?
