What is research…?
• According to Robert Ross, “Research is
essentially an investigation, a recording and
an analysis of evidence for the purpose of
gaining knowledge.”
• It can generally be defined as a systematic
method of finding solutions to problems.
Business Research
• Business Research can be simply defined as a process of
gathering comprehensive data and information on all the
areas of business and incorporating this information for
sales and profit maximization.
• The systematic collection and analysis of data with the
objective of finding answers to business problems.
• E.g. a) what is the target market of my product?
b) How to decrease the amount of excess inventory on
hand ?
Business Research
It can be stated as the acquisition of information or
knowledge for professional or commercial purpose to
determine opportunity
For example:
1. Let say there’s an automobile company that is
planning to launch a car that runs on CNG. In order to
promote cleaner fuel, the company will be involved in
developing different plans and strategies to identify
the demand for the car they are intending to launch.
Other than this, the company will also look for
competitors, the target audience, keeping in mind the
distribution of CNG in India.
Hence the researches are conducted on various ideas
to formulate a sustainable and more efficient design.

• 2. A mobile company wants to launch a new model in
the market. But they are not aware of what are the
dimensions of a mobile that are in most demand.
• Hence, the company conducts a business research
using various methods to gather information and the
same is then evaluated and conclusions are drawn, as
to what dimensions are most in-demand.
• This will enable the researcher to make wise decisions
to position his phone at the right price in the market
and hence acquire a larger market sharertunities and
goals for a business.

3. A company specialising in energy drinks wants to
expand into an older demographic. Through focused
business research, including focus groups
and competeter analysis they can effectively gain
insights to plan for this new market segment.
4. A clothing store's online platform aims to improve user
experience.
Here, business research methodologies can be used to
revamp an online presence and boost customer
satisfaction. Website visitor research, feedback
collection, and usability testing can help identify areas
for enhancement.
