Reproduction Worksheet

The document explains the process of sexual reproduction in plants and animals, highlighting the roles of gametes and fertilization. It contrasts sexual reproduction, which involves genetic variation from two parents, with asexual reproduction, which produces genetically identical offspring through mitosis. Key statements for both types of reproduction are suggested for further understanding.

Reproduction

Sexual reproduction happens in both plants and animals.

pollen
When a pollen grain lands on a compatible
stigma, a pollen tube grows. This carries the
pollen nucleus nucleus of the pollen grain from the surface
travelling to of the flower to the ovule where the egg cell
egg cell is hidden. This is where fertilisation occurs.
A seed will now start to develop.
egg cell

The sperm cell travels through the female

reproductive system. If ovulation has
occurred, an egg will travel from the ovary
sperm cell towards the uterus through the fallopian
tube. The sperm meets the egg inside the
fallopian tube which is where fertilisation
egg cell happens. The fertilised egg will travel to the
uterus where it will develop into a baby.

The gametes are the cells involved in sexual reproduction.

Gametes are formed by meiosis. In sexual reproduction, gametes from two parents combine
during fertilisation. This results in the mixing of genetic information from two different
parents, which introduces variation to the offspring. Asexual reproduction only involves
one parent. This means that no gametes are involved and there is no mixing of genetic
information. Asexual reproduction only involves mitosis and therefore produces genetically
identical offspring (clones).
