SCENE l
(As the four principals prepare for their dialogue downstage, the chorus and .
other major cast members who are behind them, gather in clusters to pan
tomime discussing the start of school. Some can go upstage to lockers as if
getting books, etc.)

TAYLOR
(sarcastically)
Well ... it looks like another Monday ...

{Everyone rolls their eyes and groans.)

BRYANT
I can't believe the weekend's already over. I had to spend all Sunday working
on that essay for Mrs. "Don't Smile Until Christmas" (Taylor looks puzzled.) ...
our language arts teacher.

KAITLIN
Only because you didn't do it in class. I finished it the day she gave it to us.

STAC Y
Oh, man ... I forgot my homework! I'm sunk!

BRYANT
There's too much homework, if you ask me.

BRUCE
Yeah, this homework is off the hizzle* dog!

TAYLOR
You can say that again ... I guess? I learn the stuff for the test and then ... poof
... it's gone! Hey, Kate, did you see "American Idol" last night? I think they
found the next W illiam Hung! It was really lame.

KAITLIN
Not me! I was busy securing MY future doing research on colleges!

* nonsense word with no actual meaning

S'COOL - Singer Edition 7

(They all gasp at the thought. Daniel, her love interest, walks by carrying
a mountain of books, and takes her attention. He waves to Kaitlin and she
becomes embarrassed. All of her friends then roll their eyes.)

TAYLOR
Well, I'm gonna make it on my talent and personality.

{They all respond with "yeah right, "sure," etc.)

11

STACY
(sarcastically)
Nice.

JAIME
You don't need talent OR personality for what I want to be.

ROBERT
W hat's that, man?

JAIME
A plumber! They make lots of money and get to wear their pants real low!

ROBERT
Yeah, man, you've got the pant thing down ... that's for sured

(Everyone laughs. Robert and Jaime perform a cool handshake.)

BRYANT
I'm gonna be a pro athlete ... probably basketball. I'm gonna be just like Le
Bran. I'll cross the ball over, (fake dribbles) and finish with a tomahawk over
anyone. No one's stopping me!

(Again, they respond with "oh yeah" cheers, etc.)

KAITLIN
You know, school's not that bad. It has good parts too! Like seeing friends, and
... remember. in Mr./Mrs. Kasher's class when we reenacted a historical war
with water balloons?

EUGENE
As it were, it was the best class I've ever had!

8 S'COOl - Singer Editiot1

STACY
I love how you guys have a reason to come to school. I don't have anything to
look forward to ... I need a passion.

BRUCE
My passion is busting a chain off the hizzle FO shizzle!

ALL
What?

KAITLIN
How about your crush on Michael, Stacy?

STACY
Yeah, like that's gonna happen. Seriously, guys, I NEED a passion! Taylor has
his music, Bryant has the team, Kaitlin and Eugene have their brains, Bruce has
... well ... himself, and Robert and Jaime have their comedy, but all I have ...
all I've got ...

ALL
Is us!

STACY
Yeah, you guys are great, but ...

KAITLIN
I know what you mean, Stace. We need a passion like ...

{They all turn their attention upstage where Will and Natalie are holding
hands and gazing into each other's eyes.)

STACY
Couple of the year.

TAYLOR
Yeah! I want what they've got.

BRYANT
Me too!

S'COOL - Singer Edition 9

JAIME
I don't really care ...

STACY
Then again, we're only teenagers. I guess we have plenty of time to find our
passions.

{The focus/lighting shifts upstage to Will and Natalie who are holding hands,
facing each other and pantomiming sweet nothings; the principals exit the
stage. At that moment the vice-principal clumsily makes an announcement over
the intercom. He is unseen or could be located in a "special" area of the
stage. If so, he should also have a secretary giving him pointers on how to use
the system.)

VP HOFFMAN
(blowing into microphone}
Is this on?? Testing, testing.

(clearing voice)

Attention all students ... the NO TOUCH policy is STILL in effect. Anyone
caught TOUCHING will be subject to detention!

{Will and Natali immediately drop hands.)

Thank you, that is all.

(He goes on talking to his secretary, unaware that the microphone is still on.}

You know ... I just LOVE being vice-principal. I get to use this really fun P.A.
system nd tell all the kids what to do. Oh, what? The microphone is still on?
Oh, I didn't realize ... I hope the kids didn't ...

(He is abruptly cut off while the students all chuckle.)

(Will and Natalie have now separated and moved to their respective lockers
at each end of the row stage left and right. They open their lockers and each
is adorned as a shrine to the other. They are ;oined by their counterparts,
Zach and Jennifer.)

ZACH
Wow, Mr. Hoff should really become a computer technician. He can work the
P.A. so well!

10 S'COOL - Singer Edition

WILL
{Will, who is daydreaming about Natalie, has not heard a word Zach says.)
I think Natalie really loves me!
ZACH
Dude, are you even listening to me? Besides, what do you know about love.
You're only (insert age) man! All I know is that you ditched me when you
started dating her.

WILL
No way. (Zach gives him a look.) Oh, I did not! Besides, when YOU fall in
love, then you'll understand.

(Mr. Whimple, who has been quietly pushing his broom around, inches in to
hear the conversation.}

ZACH
(eyeing Mr. Whimple)
Man, from the looks of your locker, I hope I never fall in love. Not only do you
have moldy food in there, but it's right next to pictures of her. I guess that's
REAL love, but either way ... it's sick!

WILL
I hope we're together forever!

MR. WHIMPLE
{having overheard)
Be careful what you wish for ...

{The focus, lights etc. go up on the other side of the stage.)

NATALIE
(lovestruck, in a daze)
I think Will REALLY loves me!

JENNIFER
Are you even listening to me?

NATALIE
(looking guilty)
Of course, I was listening to you. But seriously, I think he really loves me!

S'COOL - Singer Edition

11
JENNIFER
Like, oh my gosh, you don't know anything about love. I mean, how could
you? Hello, you're only {insert age}! But you sure do know how to hang out
with him more than me!

(Jennifer is miffed. Natalie takes it lightly.)

NATALIE
One day, Jen, you'll understand what I mean. You'll find love and you'll be in
the same boat I'm in. You.'11 understand ... true love.

(sarcastically) I can't wait!

(All others groan.)

BRYANT
Awe, man, I hate algebra. I don't get it at all.

TAYLOR
Dude, algebra isn't all that bad. It's great for catching up on your
daydreaming!

(All laugh. Zach and Will move close by.)

ZACH
Hey, man ... I don't want to know what you daydream about!

(Zach and Wiff both laugh.)

BRYANT
I mean, when am I ever going to use this stuff? The only people that use math
are like ... engineers ... architects ... and ... aliens!

KAITLIN
You never know, you might want to be an engineer, or an architect. We
already guessed you were an alien.

(Kaitlin shrugs. B ryant gives her a look.)

TAYLOR
The only thing Bryant is good at is basketball. You don't need math for that.

STACY
Sure you do ... you know ... free throws, two pointers, and three pointers - it
all adds up!

S'COOL - Sit1ger Editiot1 17

KAITLIN
Well, I think math is kind of interesting.

EUGENE
Me as well.

KAITLIN
How can you guys not love that stuff?

EUGENE
It's the one thing in life that has an exact answer, mate.

SAMANTHA
Oh yeah, right. You're just weird. You're wired differently than the rest of us.

{Their ensuing chatter is interrupted by the PA. system.}

VP HOFFMAN
(Off or onstage in a separate area, as before, he taps microphone.)
OK ... yes, I've got it ... I know how to work the P.A.! Attention all students.
In addition to the "no touching" rule, the "no cell phones" rule is also in effect.
And by no cell phones, I mean no cell phones, pagers, PDA's, CD players,
MP3 players, minidisk players, IPods, Walkmans or laptop computers. Any
musical or communicative devices found will be confiscated and the owner
sentenced to detention. Thank you, that is all.

(unaware the microphone is still on . . . again)

OK, I pushed the green button. What? I have to push the red button to turn it
off? Oh, man, I hate technology ...

SAMANTHA
I see, or rather hear old "Hoff" is at it again ...

(Cast members nod and mumble in agreement.)

STACY
I know, and I can't believe he won't let us use our cell phones at school. Does
he really expect us to stay unwired for so long?

EUGENE
He should embrace technology, mate!

BRYANT
I'm checkin' the teams' stats!

BRUCE

SAMANTHA

KAITLIN
T he only thing the internet is good for is research. Why would you guys want
to put your whole lives on the web like that anyway? Don't you know it can be
dangerous? And that people can ...

(She is cut-off by Taylor.)

TAYLOR
It's all about connecting to people, Kate. Don't get your tail feathers in a knot.

NATALIE
Yeah, Will and I "connect" on MSN every night.

VP HOFFMAN
(clearing his throat several times}
Attention students. Immediately following lunch will be this year's Career Day
presentation in the multi-purpose room. Many parents are here to show us what
kinds of jobs are out there in the world today, and I will personally be giving a
presentation on how to be an effective administrator so ... be sure not to miss
it. Thank you, that is all.

(At the end of the announcement, all students except principals exit stage.)

{Once again, unaware the microphone is still on)

OK. I hit the red switch, right? Oh, the red button? Oh, OK ...

BRYANT
Old Hoff was great as a coach, but I'm not sure about his ability to
"administrate."

TAYLOR
I think he needs a little help with that P.A.

STACY
Maybe just a little.

KAITLIN
A good P.A. system can be a tricky thing, you guys! There are lots of knobs
and buttons, and believe me, it's no fun trying to hook up a reverse switch
electrical input.

ALL
What??

EUGENE
You're absolutely right, Kate. When I tried re-wiring my friend's amp, it was
close to impossible.

But you guys missed the most important part of his announcement!

{All groan at the terrible pun, then join in the fun.)

BRYANT
The only class that fills my HUNGER for knowledge!

KAITLIN
I really RELISH this class!

TAYLOR
Help! I've created a monster!

{She looks up at the banner For the dance.)

MICHAEL
I was thinking, um, oh, look here comes Kaitlin.

(He sighs. Kaitlin comes center stage.)

Um ... up a creek without a paddle?

MR./MRS. KASHERS
Well ... sort of. We wouldn't be where we are today without great people like
Joan of Arc, our Founding Fathers, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Eleanor Roo

hearts. Basically Michael, kick aside the fear and charge!!

pacing.) She's a great person and I really like her, and what do you think I
should do?
