What is Graphic Design?
Graphic design is the art of visual communication. It uses typography, photography, and illustration to convey
ideas or messages. It's not just about making things look pretty; it's about solving a problem through visual
means. For example, a restaurant menu needs to be easy to read and enticing, a billboard must grab attention
instantly, and a logo must be memorable.
Applications of Graphic Design
Graphic design is everywhere. You see it in:
• Advertising & Branding: Logos, posters, brochures, billboards, and social media ads.
• Publications: Books, magazines, newspapers, and newsletters.
• User Interface (UI) Design: Websites, mobile apps, and software interfaces.
• Packaging: Product boxes and labels.
• Environmental Graphics: Signage, wayfinding systems, and murals.
2. Navigating the CorelDRAW Interface
The CorelDRAW interface is where you'll create all your designs. It's a key part of your workflow.
Key Interface Components
• Menu Bar: Located at the top, this contains all the main commands like File, Edit, View, and Help.
• Standard Toolbar: Just below the menu bar, this has quick-access buttons for common tasks like New,
Open, Save, Print, and Undo.
• Property Bar: This is a dynamic toolbar that changes based on the tool you've selected. For example, if
you click the Text Tool, the Property Bar will show options for font, size, and alignment.
• Toolbox: This is a vertical bar on the left side of the screen. It contains all the tools you'll use to create
and edit objects, such as the Pick Tool, Shape Tool, and Text Tool.
• Drawing Page/Canvas: This is the main work area where you create your design.
• Color Palette: Typically on the right side of the screen, this provides a quick way to apply colors to
your objects.
• Status Bar: At the very bottom, this displays information about the selected object, tool hints, and color
fill details.
3. Working with Tools and Workspace
Essential Tools in the Toolbox
• Pick Tool: The first tool in the toolbox, used for selecting, positioning, and transforming objects.
• Shape Tool: This allows you to edit the nodes of an object, changing its shape.
• Zoom Tool: Used to magnify or reduce the view of your design.
• Freehand Tool: Used for drawing lines and curves.
• Text Tool: Used for adding and formatting text.
• Rectangle Tool: Used to draw squares and rectangles.
• Ellipse Tool: Used to draw circles and ellipses.
Customizing Your Workspace
CorelDRAW allows you to customize your workspace to suit your needs. You can undock and move toolbars
and palettes to different positions on your screen. This helps you create an efficient layout for your personal
workflow.
4. Creating a New Canvas
Before you start designing, you must create a new document. This is where you set the basic properties of your
design.
Steps to Create a New Document
1. Go to File > New or press Ctrl + N.
2. The Create a New Document dialog box will appear.
3. Name: Give your project a descriptive name.
4. Size: Select a preset size like A4 or A3, or enter custom dimensions.
5. Orientation: Choose between Portrait (vertical) and Landscape (horizontal).
6. Color Mode:
o CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Key/Black): Use this for projects that will be printed, as it's
the standard for professional printing.
o RGB (Red, Green, Blue): Use this for projects that will be displayed on a screen (websites,
social media, etc.).
7. Resolution (DPI):
o 300 DPI: Recommended for print to ensure high-quality, sharp images.
o 72 DPI: Standard for web and screen-based designs, as a higher resolution isn't necessary and
would only increase file size.
5. Saving and Opening Projects
Saving Your Project
It's crucial to save your work frequently to avoid losing progress.
1. Go to File > Save or press Ctrl + S.
2. Choose a location on your computer to save the file.
3. Ensure the file type is .CDR (CorelDRAW). This is the native file format that preserves all layers, text,
and vector information.
4. Give the file a clear, descriptive name (e.g., My-Logo-Design-v1).
Opening a Project
To continue working on a saved project:
1. Go to File > Open or press Ctrl + O.
2. Navigate to the location where you saved your file.
3. Select the .CDR file and click Open.
