Class 10 CBSE – Life Processes Notes

Introduction

Life processes are the activities performed by living organisms to maintain life. These include Nutrition, Respiration,
Transportation and Excretion.

1. Nutrition

Nutrition is the process of obtaining food and using it for energy, growth and repair.

Autotrophic Nutrition

Green plants prepare their own food through photosynthesis.

Photosynthesis Equation

6CO■ + 6H■O → C■H■■O■ + 6O■

Conditions for Photosynthesis

Sunlight, Chlorophyll, Carbon dioxide and Water.

Heterotrophic Nutrition

Organisms depend on others for food. Types: holozoic, saprophytic and parasitic.

Human Digestive System

Mouth → Oesophagus → Stomach → Small intestine → Large intestine → Rectum → Anus

2. Respiration

Respiration is the process of breakdown of food to release energy.

Aerobic Respiration

Occurs in presence of oxygen and releases more energy.

Anaerobic Respiration

Occurs without oxygen and releases less energy.

Human Respiratory System

Nostrils → Nasal cavity → Trachea → Bronchi → Lungs → Alveoli

Alveoli

Tiny air sacs where exchange of gases occurs.

3. Transportation

Transportation helps in movement of materials in body.

Heart

Humans have a four-chambered heart.

Blood Components

RBC, WBC, Platelets and Plasma.

Blood Vessels

Arteries carry blood away from heart, veins carry blood to heart.

Transportation in Plants

Xylem transports water; phloem transports food.

4. Excretion

Removal of harmful metabolic wastes from the body.

Human Excretory System

Kidneys, ureters, urinary bladder and urethra.

Nephron

Structural and functional unit of kidney.

Important Diagrams

Digestive system, heart, nephron, respiratory system, stomata.

Frequently Asked Questions

Photosynthesis, double circulation, nephron structure, transportation in plants.
