The food that we eat plays a central role
in the survival of species. It provides the
energy that enables us to carry out the
many activities that we do each day
such as breathing, walking, studying
and cooking.
Food also provides the substances needed for growth and repair of body
parts. The cells in the body need food for energy used for growth and
repair. Food must be broken down into a form that these microscopic cells
can use.
Digestive system
The body changes food into a usable form by
means of a group of organs referred to as
the digestive system.
The digestive system is a complex group of
organs that work together to break down
food, absorb nutrients, and expel waste. It
plays a vital role in converting the food we
eat into energy and nutrients needed for the
body’s growth, repair, and maintenance.

DIGESTIVE SYSTEM
The system involves mechanical and
chemical processes and works with other
systems, such as the circulatory and
nervous systems, to ensure food is
properly processed. The function of the
digestive system is digestion, the
breakdown of organic compounds into
their simple forms for use by the cells.
Digestion is the chief function of the
digestive system. It breaks down food
mechanically and chemically.
WHAT ARE THE PARTS OF THE
DIGESTIVE SYSTEM?

MOUTH - The digestive process begins in the mouth.

Here, food is chewed into smaller pieces (mechanical
digestion) and mixed with saliva produced by salivary
glands. Saliva contains an enzyme called amylase, which
begins the breakdown of carbohydrates (chemical
digestion).
WHAT ARE THE PARTS OF THE
DIGESTIVE SYSTEM?

ESOPHAGUS -The esophagus is a muscular

tube that connects the mouth to the
stomach. After swallowing, food moves
down the esophagus through a series of
muscular contractions called peristalsis.
WHAT ARE THE PARTS OF THE
DIGESTIVE SYSTEM?

STOMACH- The stomach is a muscular organ that

continues the breakdown of food through both
mechanical and chemical means. It churns the
food, mixing it with digestive juices like
hydrochloric acid and enzymes, which help break
down proteins.
WHAT ARE THE PARTS OF THE
DIGESTIVE SYSTEM?

SMALL INTESTINE - This is where most of the digestion

and nutrient absorption takes place. The small intestine is
divided into three parts: the duodenum, jejunum, and
ileum. Enzymes from the pancreas and bile from the liver
aid in breaking down food. The inner walls of the small
intestine are covered with tiny hair-like structures called
villi, which help absorb nutrients into the bloodstream.
WHAT ARE THE PARTS OF THE
DIGESTIVE SYSTEM?

LARGE INTESTINE - The large intestine

absorbs water and salts from the
remaining food matter and forms solid
waste (feces). It also houses bacteria that
help digest any remaining food particles.
WHAT ARE THE PARTS OF THE
DIGESTIVE SYSTEM?

LIVER - The liver produces bile, a

substance that helps break down fats in
the small intestine. It also detoxifies
harmful substances and processes
nutrients absorbed from the small intestine.
WHAT ARE THE PARTS OF THE
DIGESTIVE SYSTEM?

RECTUM AND ANUS - The rectum is the

final section of the digestive tract where
feces is stored before being expelled. The
anus is the opening through which feces
leaves the body.
