Catalog Description
The AUENG2E Speaking unit is a one semester unit designed for the English Language
Program. The aim of the unit is to prepare students to be effective communicators in their future
academic studies. Students are taught the language skills and strategies to present their opinions
and interact successfully in academic discussions as well as defend their ideas and challenge
others in academic debates.
Course Objectives and Student Learning Outcomes
The Student can:
ENG2SLO1 Produce a range of language with good fluency and spontaneity
o ENG2SD1.1 Can produce stretches of language with a fairly even tempo; although
he/she can be hesitant as he/she searches for patterns and expressions, there are few
noticeably long pauses
o ENG2SD1.2 Can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular
interaction with native speakers quite possible without imposing strain on either party.
o ENG2SD1.3 Can use a limited number of cohesive devices to link his/her utterances into
clear, coherent discourse, though there may be some ‘jumpiness’ in a long contribution.

o ENG2SD1.4 Can use higher level compensation strategies to cover gaps in vocabulary
and structure
o ENG2SD1.5 can display a relatively high degree of grammatical control - errors occur
but these do not lead to misunderstandings
o ENG2SD1.6 Has a good range of vocabulary for matters connected to his/her field and
most general topics. Can vary formulation to avoid frequent repetition, but lexical gaps
can still cause hesitation and circumlocution.
o ENG2SD1.7 Lexical accuracy is generally high, though some confusion and incorrect
word choice does occur without hindering communication

and communicative strategies to respond to others and to maintain interaction

precision and provide support at some length, and construct a chain of reasoned
arguments
o ENG2SADD1.2 Can ask follow-up questions to check that he/she has understood what a
speaker intended to say, and get clarification of ambiguous points.
o ENG2SADD1.3 Can initiate discourse, take his/her turn when appropriate and end
conversation when he/she needs to, and intervene though he/she may not always do this
elegantly
o ENG2SADD1.4 Can use stock phrases (e.g. ‘That’s a difficult question to answer’) to
gain time and keep the turn whilst formulating what to say.
o ENG2SADD1.5 Can give feedback on and follow up statements and inferences and so
help the development of the discussion.
o ENG2SADD1.6 Can help the discussion along on familiar ground, confirming
comprehension, inviting others in, etc.
ENG2SDLO1 Formulate, develop and defend an argument systematically with
appropriate highlighting of significant points, and relevant supporting detail

*There are no classes during assessment weeks. Students should refer to their assessment
schedule.
Methods of Delivery
The Spring 2025 semester will be delivered face-to-face at AU campus. Teaching material will
be uploaded on Teams and Edulearn (Moodle). Speaking assessments will be conducted face-to-
face on campus at AU .
Homework: Students are required to engage in authentic practice of English language outside
class time.
Online Quizzes: N/A
Extent and Nature of Use of Technology
The use of technology will depend on individual instructors, but may include use of smart
boards, the internet, use of programs such as Microsoft PowerPoint and Microsoft Word. All
students are required to have an active AU email address where they can communicate with their
instructor. Students may be made familiar with the use of Moodle, the internet browser, and
basic Microsoft Word and Microsoft PowerPoint applications required by the unit.
The use of AI is determined by the course instructor and is limited to learning activities and
cannot be used to complete any assessments inside or outside the classroom.
