Numeric Concepts

The document is a mathematics test focused on numeric concepts, consisting of two sections with various problems including logarithmic equations, simplifications, and exponential functions. It also includes a practical application scenario involving a solar-powered pump system and a drug formulation analysis for quality control. Students are instructed to show all working and utilize calculators where permitted.

VSM AFRICA MATHEMATICS TEST

TOPIC: NUMERIC CONCEPTS

Time: 2 hours
INSTRUCTIONS:
✓ Answer all questions.
✓ Show all working clearly.
✓ Calculators are allowed unless stated.

SECTION A
1. Solve for 𝑥 in the following equation
a) log 𝑥 5 + 5log 5 𝑥 = 4

b) log 𝑥 8 − log 𝑥 2 16 = 1

2. Simplify the following

1 1
𝑥(𝑥 + 1)2 − (𝑥 + 1)−2
𝑥2
3. Solve for 𝑥 in the equation 42𝑥 − 4𝑥+1 + 4 = 0
√3+√2
4. Simplify
√3−√2

SECTION B

Item 1

The Rural Water Management Committee in Soroti monitors a new solar-powered pump
system supplying a village borehole. In the first week (𝑤 = 0), the system pumps 15,000
liters. Due to system optimizations, the weekly water output 𝑄(𝑤)(in liters) after 𝑤weeks
is modeled by the exponential function:
𝑤
𝑄(𝑤) = 15,000 × (1.4) 3

The Decision: A development NGO has offered funding support based on the following
performance criteria:
1. Expand the current system if the predicted weekly output after 12 weeks is below
50,000 liters.

2. Purchase an additional pump if it takes more than 14 weeks for the weekly output
to reach 85,000 liters.

As the Water Planning Intern, you must analyze the model to determine which action the
Committee should take before the funding window closes.

Task:

Help the Water Management Committee analyze the growth trajectory of the solar pump
system, assess the NGO's funding conditions and suggest the most appropriate course of
action.

Item 2

You have been assigned to the Quality Control Laboratory at Cipla QC Limited to verify
the mathematical precision of a new antiretroviral drug formulation intended for
distribution across Uganda. The drug's Bioavailability Coefficient 𝐵is modeled by the
complex surd expression √18 − 12√2, representing the rate at which the medication is
absorbed into the bloodstream. Additionally, the Concentration Ratio 𝑅of the active
√3+√2
ingredient to the stabilizing agent is given by . The National Drug Authority (NDA)
√3−√2
requires that 𝐵be expressed in simplest surd form and 𝑅be written as 𝑎 + 𝑏√𝑐(where
𝑎, 𝑏, 𝑐are integers) for the electronic prescribing system to calculate accurate dosages. With
the Lead Pharmacist unavailable due to an urgent regulatory meeting, you are the
Pharmaceutical Quality Control Intern tasked with simplifying both expressions
immediately to ensure the drug formulation meets NDA standards before the batch is
released to hospitals nationwide.

The Task:

1. Evaluate the Bioavailability Coefficient 𝐵by finding the square root of the complex
surd expression.
2. Transform the Concentration Ratio 𝑅into the form 𝑎 + 𝑏√𝑐 by rationalizing the
denominator.
3. Advise the Production Manager on whether the formulation meets NDA
documentation standards, justifying your recommendation with the simplified surd
forms.
