AADARS M S
• In general, structural members which are relatively long compared to their
lateral dimensions are called columns or struts.
• Columns are vertical members subjected to compressive loads, which are used
in building frames.
• When the member under compressive load is in inclined or horizontal position,
it is called as a strut.
• A column or stanchion loaded axially is likely to fail by bending or buckling.
• On the other hand, the column which is likely to fail by compression is called
short column.
• In short columns, effect of lateral deflection is negligible
• Also, the effect of direct stress is small as compared to bending stresses in long
columns.
• Some examples are members in a truss, piston rods, side links in forging
machines, connecting rods etc.
Buckling
• Buckling is the sudden change in shape of a structural component under
load.
• A column loaded axially can experience buckling, based on how tall and
slender it is.
Critical Load
The maximum limiting load at which the column tends to have lateral
displacement or tends to buckle is called buckling load or crippling load or
critical load.
