Potato Container Growing Guide for Beginners

■ Choosing the Right Container

• Best size: 35 cm diameter × 50 cm height (~10–12 gallons).
• Ensure drainage holes to prevent waterlogging.
• 3 seed potatoes per 10-gallon container.

■■ Soil Mix
• Use a 40:40:20 mix: 40% loam soil, 40% coco peat, 20% compost.
• For a 10-gallon container (~30 kg soil): 12 kg loam, 12 kg coco peat, 6 kg compost.
• Mix thoroughly before filling.

■ Planting Directions
• Fill the bottom 15–18 cm with soil.
• Place 3 seed potatoes evenly spaced, eyes facing up.
• Cover with 8–10 cm soil.
• As stems grow 15–20 cm tall, add 6–8 cm soil (‘hilling’). Repeat until container is full.

■ Watering
• Water lightly after planting.
• Weeks 1–3: Keep soil moist, water 2–3 times/week.
• Weeks 4–8: Water deeply when top 2–3 cm is dry.
• Weeks 8–12 (flowering): Most important stage — keep soil consistently moist.
• Stop watering 1–2 weeks before harvest.

■ Harvesting
• Early harvest (new potatoes): 60–70 days, gently dig near top.
• Main harvest: When leaves turn yellow and die back.
• Wait 1–2 weeks after dieback, then empty container.
• Cure potatoes in a dark, ventilated spot 7–10 days before storage.

■ Pests and Disease Prevention

• Buy certified seed potatoes to avoid diseases.
• Rotate crops: Do not plant potatoes in same soil immediately — grow beans, greens, or herbs
first.
• Avoid overwatering — reduces rot risk.
• Check leaves weekly: remove beetles, caterpillars, or aphids by hand.
• Mulch with straw or leaves to deter pests and regulate moisture.
• Use neem oil or insecticidal soap if pests spread.

■■ Reusing Soil
• Remove old roots and tubers after harvest.
• Mix in 25–30% fresh compost + 20% coco peat to refresh soil.
• Add wood ash (potassium) and bone meal (phosphorus).
• Let soil rest 2–3 weeks before replanting.
• Avoid using same soil for potatoes or tomatoes immediately.
■ Extra Tips
• Potatoes need 6–8 hours sunlight daily.
• Ideal temperature: 15–25 °C.
• Use straw mulch to keep soil cool and moist.
• Healthy plant = better yield (3–6 kg per 10-gallon container).
