INTRODUCTION
Weather is an important part of our daily life. It affects agriculture, transport, industries, communication, and
human activities. Changes in temperature, rainfall, humidity, wind, and atmospheric pressure influence the
environment around us. To study these atmospheric conditions accurately, scientists use different types of
instruments known as meteorological instruments. Meteorology is the branch of science that deals with the study
of the atmosphere and weather conditions. Meteorologists collect information about various weather elements and
analyse them to forecast weather. Meteorological instruments are used in weather stations, airports, ships, farms,
and scientific research centres. Each instrument has a specific function. For example, thermometers measure
temperature, barometers measure atmospheric pressure, rain gauges measure rainfall, and anemometers
measure wind speed.
THERMOMETER
A thermometer is an instrument used to measure temperature. It consists of a glass tube, a bulb containing
mercury or alcohol, and a graduated scale. It helps meteorologists measure atmospheric temperature accurately.

BAROMETER
A barometer measures atmospheric pressure. It helps scientists predict weather changes and storms. There are
two main types of barometers: mercury barometer and aneroid barometer.

RAIN GAUGE
A rain gauge measures the amount of rainfall received in a particular area. It helps farmers and scientists study
rainfall patterns and water resources.

HYGROMETER
A hygrometer measures humidity in the atmosphere. Humidity refers to the amount of water vapour present in the
air.

ANEMOMETER
An anemometer measures wind speed. It is widely used in weather stations, airports, and marine studies.

A wind vane measures wind direction. It shows the direction from which the wind is blowing.

IMPORTANCE OF METEOROLOGICAL INSTRUMENTS
Meteorological instruments are very important in weather forecasting and climate studies. They help scientists
collect accurate information about temperature, rainfall, humidity, wind speed, and atmospheric pressure. These
instruments are useful in agriculture, aviation, disaster management, transportation, and scientific research.
Accurate weather forecasts help protect human life and property from natural disasters such as cyclones and
floods.
CONCLUSION
Meteorological instruments are essential tools used for studying weather and climate. They help scientists collect
accurate information about atmospheric conditions such as temperature, rainfall, humidity, wind speed, and
atmospheric pressure. These instruments play an important role in weather forecasting, disaster management,
