CHAPTER 5
OXIDATION AND REDUCTION
Oxidation
(In terms of oxygen and hydrogen)
Oxidation is the addition of oxygen or an electronegative element to a substance or the removal of
hydrogen or an electropositive element from a substance.

e.g., 2Cu (s) + O2 (g) → CuO (s)

H2S (g) + Cl2 (g) → 2 HCl (g) + S (s)
(In term of electron)
Oxidation is the loss of electron by an element, compound or ion.
Reduction
(In terms of oxygen and hydrogen)
Reduction is the addition of hydrogen or an electropositive element to a substance or the removal
of oxygen or an electronegative element from a substance.

e.g., Cl2 (g) + H2 (g) → 2HCl (g)

CuO (s) + H2 (g) → Cu (s) + H2O (l)

(In term of electron)

Reduction is the gain of electron by an element, compound or ion.

Oxidizing agent

Oxidizing agent is an acceptor of electrons.

e.g., oxygen, chlorine, hydrogen peroxide, nitric acid (dil./conc.), potassium permanganate,
potassium dichromate

Reducing agent

Reducing agent is a donor of electrons.

e.g., hydrogen, carbon, carbon monoxide, hydrogen sulphide, sulphur dioxide
